| Ben Folds – Not The Same Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| He told us last week it was a real story about a guy he knew, who was on an acid trip and the next day was a born again Christian. The first two stanza's is pretty literal. | |

| Dni is right - it is about the emotional centre of the brain that sort of shuts down under extreme stress and hapiness "A quick short fuse in every mans brain". | |

Recently, 7th of September 2006, at Sydney in his Australian Symphony tour he told us, sarcastically of course; "this song was formed from one of my earliest memories in a Dennies restaurant. Now I can see how people would consider this a political song but uhh...I don't really think it is." By the way - if you have yet to hear him with an orchestra, buy the WASO DVD or something. I can't listen to him without an Orchestra behind him anymore. |

For me (purely personal interpretation) this song reflects the attitude of the world in times of crisis. Things like 9/11, the Cold War, Y2K send people into insane motions. Conspiracy theories, over reactions, media spins and government oppression all are commonplace during these times and REM is simply singing about the silliness of it all. They use the insanely fast tempo and lyrics to reflect the chaos and mass hysteria. In this context the whole 9/11 song list seems quite ironic. Things like national sercurity, big brother, war on terror all jump out at me from this song. Just my opinion :) |
