This song seems to make a lot of references to the book, Tao te Ching, written by Lao Tzu. Quoted by Lao Tzu himself, "If you want to be given everything, give everything up". He also says to become like the water, which is flowing, which is a lot like the "in the deep, swimming" aspect of the song. I wonder if that is what Bird York had in mind... |

i love the line "and some foreign candle burning in your eyes". to me that sounds like a relationship between people and one of them starts having feelings for another person. the whole "candle" referring to love like a spark. and it is foreign because it is not the look in her eyes he was used to before. now she is gazing past him and at someone else.
i also like the last line "loiter the whole day through and lose yourself in lines dissecting love". because it holds so much truth. you try to dissect every part of something when it goes bad. you dont think of anything else cause you're heartbroken.
ahh i love this song. and i loove the shins. how can lyrics truly be this amazing while having a breath-taking melody as well? |

i know this isnt what it means but i like to think of it as like how a suicide leads to something bad and it escalates to everybody. if you choose to kill yourself, you are upsetting so many other people who could eventually do the same to themselves because you did it. it helps you remember that your actions play a part in the world and can hurt anybody else that loves you. |

i know it prolly doesnt mean this but i like to think of it like getting over an addiction. you had to do it to live and now you still want it but know that you cant. for me, i see it as cutting. the "feeling at my fingertips" and the "pullin at my skin" reminds me of the feeling that you want to cut but you know that you cant. |

i think this song is about how willing you are to keep going when things are hard. sometimes things are a big struggle, but if you're strong enough you can get to the end where the light is and get the help you need. i've had problems in my life where i needed to be strong and i have to step up and get help for what i was doing. that's the way i see it. |
