Ivy – Tess Don't Tell Lyrics 19 years ago
i love ivy. this is one of my favourites off their new album.

often i find their lyrics not so easy to interpret.

from what i understand, the singer is 'tess.' she's in a relationship with a boyfriend who is very private, has his own inner demons and while he depends on, he doesn't show it easily.

she has questions that she wants to pose to him. she has issues that she wants to discuss. but he "keeps their secrets close".

and there is also a sense of irony that if she leaves, only then will she discover that in fact she is the most important person to him.

in some ways the refrain is the singer telling tess to stay. a little secret "not for anybody else" to help her along, to let her know that she should stay.

it's about how she struggles to stay in a relationship, and how hard it can be to have faith in what can often appear to be a one-sided relationship.

Semisonic – Sunshine And Chocolate Lyrics 19 years ago
i always thought this song was about sex.

"Sunshine and chocolate all over me
In my mouth and on my tree
Round my body under my hat
Sunshine and chocolate just... like... that"

sounds pretty suggestive to me.

i think it refers to when he lost his virginity under an auditorium. he'd spent his whole life "looking for the perfect mate" or, perfect person to lose it to, and when he does, "She showed me why
I would have waited all of my life."

Matthew Good Band – The Fine Art Of Falling Apart Lyrics 20 years ago
My favourite line is:

You see I used to think that I'd get over everything
But everything just got
over me

So hauntingly sad.

Pilate – Mercy Lyrics 20 years ago
I love the guitar work in this song. It's so rich and melancholy.

This song basically talks about a break up. She no longer wants him, and while the relationship was brief, he's still pining for her.

Love is like a drug, and he's "wired," and he tells her that he's not like all the other 'pretenders' who fall at her feet.

One of my favourite lines are:
"In a sea of painted whispers did I drown."
As if all the words she said were 'painted whispers', lies, or explanations of why the relationship couldn't last. And the fact that he 'drowns' in these words is so emotive.

I wonder about the line, "It’s the way you always left me coming down" - perhaps she also abused the relationship, or perhaps didn't treasure him enough?

Basically he's tired from wanting her so badly and wants to stop feeling the pain of heartbreak; he wants "mercy" from it all.

"And they say that you can reach the sky upon your knees and without pride,
I’m screaming, but my needs have chained me to the ground…"

Butterfly Boucher – I Can't Make Me Lyrics 20 years ago
To me this is a straightforward love song talking about the beginnings of a relationship where you start to have feelings for someone but not to the point where you know for a fact that you love them. It's all about the levels of commitment you're ready (or not ready) to give to someone.

Perhaps they are pushing you to love them to get involved in a relationship. But as the song goes - "I can't make me love you, and you can't make me either"

The song goes on to explain that what you need is time. While there is potential potential relationship in the mix, obviously they're not ready to commit. "hold me tight, but not too tight."

They're basically asking for patience and time.

i read 'lonely picker's daydream' as the guitarist. you know, picking on the guitar, etc. so singer/musician/guy's daydream

Samiam – Sunshine Lyrics 20 years ago
upon first listen, i heard it as the singer trying to tell a girl he knows and loves that he sees her being taken advantage of by other guys.

he wants her to know that he gets her. that these guys don't appreciate her for who she truly is. and the irony is that without her, those guys would "be nothing".

the song also speaks to me on a different level - about how we often put up facades of ourselves. and that sometimes when we try and hide ourselves behind these personas we attract people that inevitably turn out to be people we are not suited to.

it seems that those who fall for us don't bother trying to look below the surface, and try and find out who our real selves are. And that's what makes relationships so heartbreaking sometimes. and why this song speaks to me.

Ivy – While We're In Love Lyrics 20 years ago
i read it as her telling a lover at the beginning of the relationship where everything is going. It's a destructive relationship "we know it won't last forever" or maybe a relationship they shouldn't be in "'cause we not meant to be together." Yet they're in love and can't help but fall for each other.

I like the first few lines which seem to say so much about love. it's a different angle on how love and relationships pan out, but still true for all it's negative qualities:

"While we're in love we'll bleed each other dry/We'll hold each other close/We'll make each other cry/While we're in love we'll get what we deserve
until we lose our faith/until we lose our nerve. "

It's like saying, 'we'll love each other until we can't handle it anymore.' 'we'll love and care for each other, despite knowing that things may well end.

The lines: "While we're in love we'll get what we deserve/until we lose our faith/until we lose our nerve" speak to me. The idea that we can love someone to the point where we become scared of losing them, question whether we begin to lose ourselves in a relationship, or begin to question our own love for them, to the point where we find ourselves ending something out of fear.

this song seems to say to me all the fears and concerns that we have when we fall in love. in some ways she's probably also trying to reassure herself, or talk herself into going into this relationship in the first place.

Third Eye Blind – Good Man Lyrics 21 years ago
This is one of my favourites on their new cd. My favourite line is: "How do you do it when I'm overwhelmed by a violet sky?"

I spent a while scratching my head over that line. It evokes so many different readings. I've finally settled on violet meaning something akin to thunderclouds. When a thunderstorm is threatening, the clouds turn almost purple/blackish. So he feels like he's being overwhelmed by something ominous.

Essentially I read this song as an apology of sorts for how things went wrong. He stuffed up and wants her forgiveness, and he's still pining "hanging on her dress like a little boy".

They've had their share of arguments to the point where they "bleed each other from the vein", and he points out that all the arguments do is mar the good times they had together.

He's the one with the problems: "If I ever find a way to stop disintegrating/into pieces that I was". And he notes that all she ever wanted was a 'good man' to treat her right, and not what he ended out being.

Basically it's a song that lets him come to terms with how things went wrong in a relationship. He regrets it all, perhaps not then, but in hindsight, he realises what he's lost: "when we kissed, and only now do I feel your mouth, like an ache you never knew, and it was right in front of you".

And no matter how hard she tried to be everything for him and her love ilke "sweet summer oil" he recoiled from it all. He hid from her love, and essentially pushed her away.

I just love the imagery in this song, and the depth and emotion in the lyrics.
