Blimey, lots of philosophy here then! Well, it's that kind of song I guess. Dylan always make yer think aye! Personally I've only ever heard the one first person tense version of the song (the one here) so always assumed it was a straight up narrative love/life story with a few clever metaphors thrown in. I love it when an artist does that because it gives a song so much depth and freedom of interpretation and Bob Dylan does it so well all the time. I shall be looking out for those other versions now and giving them a run through to see if it changes my perspective at all. Meanwhile, I know it''s been seaid but the "Italian poet" section of the song is simply awesome imagary. I love it! |

| Nope, you'd have to go a long way to beat the original but this is a cracking version all the same. | |

My personal take on this song. I sturggled for many years and through a lot of fertility tretament to have a baby. During that time this song resonated depely within me as how I felt. When youw ant a baby and can't have one - how the longing can destroy the love you have with your partner. "You know if I leave you now It doesn't mean that I love you any less it's just the state I'm in I can't be good to anyone else like this" Can't tell you the number of times I want tot "leave" my husband so he could be with someone more fertile who wouldn't be this terribly sad and painful person, longing for the impossible dream. This song still reminds me of the darkness I felt. I don't know if the intention of the lrycis is to allude to longing for a baby but I have often wanted to ask SM herself to find out. |

This song, quite simply, is music to have sex to. Go on. Try it. Incidently, my take on it's intepretation is about giving yourself over so completely to your lover that you have no inhibitions with them, or fear of their love or ability to hurt you. |

| To me, this song seems to be about regret and unfulfilled love. The singer is indicating that they have missed an opportunity to reveal their feelings to the one they love, and that they have only just now got over themselves (and worrying about what is socially acceptable) to tell that person how they feel. | |
