feels to me like a song of rebirth (the new morning), and considering the manic intensity of late 60s Dylan and the infamous crash it represents a new start - a simpler way of life. Dylan seems content with the simple pleasures of life, and also seems to be re-defining himself (as he was also prone to do). Overall a secular 'born again' song to me. Interesting that the religious born again element would follow later. |

This song was used in the film "Keeping the Faith" with Ben Stiller and Ed Norton. I dont know if it was written specifically for the film or written before, but the lyrics tell the story of the film pretty closely. We have a preist and a rabi (hence the yiddish: Pitseleh)....they are best friends who fall for the the same girl. It sounds to me like the lyrics are Nortons character speeking (the priest). He is in love with the girl (even though she loves stillers character) and eventually tells her: hence kept it from you pitseleh etc This causes major probs with all three friends' relationships. Norton is also questioning his faith too, hence: the reference to the devil and giving up the thing you love. |

to elektric....spot on i think. Reminds me of how you feel when you are alone, and feeling worthless..but eventually you find something and you gain some self worth. The line: i felt so ugly before i didnt know what to do, is so spot on, cause when you feel that way you simply dont know what to do. |
