| Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man Lyrics
| 15 years ago

I'm surprised no one has found and posted this yet. It is from an interview in January 2010 with Marcus:
It’s a very personal story, so I won’t elaborate upon too much. Suffice to say, it was a situation in my life I wasn’t very happy with or proud of… and sometimes when you can’t describe a feeling with your own words, it’s almost easier to express in a song. And then, when you get asked about the songs, it’s quite difficult to explain. It’s a conundrum – you don’t want to seem self-indulgent explaining yourself; it’s always awkward. Which is weird again, because it’s never awkward actually singing them. I suppose the song should stand on its own and people draw their own interpretation from the words. But for me, personally, it’s the lyrics that I listen to again and again in a song. I place specific importance on them. I can’t write lyrics unless I really feel them and mean them, which can sometimes be quite frustrating – because if you’re not feeling much at the time, you’re stuck. “I guess the sound of it grabs you a little bit by the balls – it’s quite an aggressive song, a bit more of a punch in the face. Or at least, for our stuff, anyway – a lot of our stuff isn’t quite as hard-hitting as that. It felt like the right song to be the single because it represented the harder, darker side of what we do, and at the same time, the more folksy and punchy side.”[2] |

They know each other. I am guessing the girl is the girlfriend of a friend of his, possibly his roommates? I can't tell if he is in a relationship or not, either way, he knows its wrong, she makes the advances anyway and he gives in. Catchy song. |

You can't possibly be serious. If you watch any of their videos, they're pretty far out there and usually not always symoblic of the actual song itself. What does the song have to do with that? |

Did you really listen to the lyrics? They are not glamorizing the lifestyle. They're pretty much stating that it is sh*t. Or at least that it is very flawed. |

lonelyxcigar hit the nail on the head. The song is very sarcastic and pretty much reminds me of the 20 somethings/Gen Yers out there. Our parents were busy productive people, for the most part, and we're pretty much a waste of space, pretending that our lives are filled with interesting adventures. When really we're just living off our parents, "saving money" and doing shit with our lives. I love it. |

I've always felt it was either about shoplifting and yes, the people who allow you to do it, or, if we were a much happier, beautiful place, it would be about window shopping. But yeah, very unlikely as the two lines that precede the last sorta blow that out of the water.
Or it could be about stalking someone in a department store you've been to before. |

| Keane – Nothing In My Way Lyrics

I can see it the way many others have seen it, a couple on the decline, hiding feelings, etc. But the more I listen to this song, the more I hear someone who has been hurt by their significant other (or friend, whoever) and wants to believe that this person is also as hurt as they are. But they aren't.
That person has said goodbye, they are moving on, the singer isn't and wants to believe they are just pretending to be strong but really it hurts them just as much as the singer.
Or it could be the exact opposite, but I prefer my interpretation. Less sung about. :) |

| LFO – Summer Girls Lyrics

This song has to be one of the most ridiculous songs I have EVER heard. The lyrics are so childish but moreover THEY MAKE NO SENSE.
How can people sit here and defend this piece of crap? He throws in lines just to rhyme with another line that actually DOES have something to do with the song.
And the time period is all over the place. Alex P Keaton and NKOTB are one time period while Abercrombie and Fitch is another.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact I was in high school at the time this came out, just about to graduate and thought it was ridiculous then too. I wasn't in middle school doing the happy feel good dance to it.
Why am I even commenting? I heard it on the radio today and it made me want to throw things because it is just THAT ridiculously stupid. |

I think it is about a tough, hot chick that all the girls wanted to be but hated her at the same time. She treats people like crap to be honest, and the words "what are you going when you are older and no one wants to know ya?" is just referring to when she leaves school and nobody gives two damns about her.
But the narrator wants her to know she'll still be there for her when they exit the high school walls and no one cares how tough or hot she was in high school. |

I also think she is saying I pay to call home instead of my baby come home. Think about the song, doesn't it make a lot more sense to say I pay to call home since she is talking about wanting to get away from the life she is currently living? |

My take on the song is that she has lost something she feels she cannot get back, but she wants to be back there, in a different time, a different space.
I also feel like she is saying she does not want to live the "corporate life" (lord, that spelling is atrocious), a life that is entrapping her. It is dark, dingy, unchanging in this world. She wants more. |

I also believe it was a suicide, hanging most likely from the fact there is a tree involved. The girl is 14, too young to want to end her life. He is just saying he hopes his daughter lives through that age and grows up. He wants to see her get beyond that point in her life, as any father wants for his daughter.
Very sad, very powerful, very good song. I love Minus the Bear. |

| Spoon – I Summon You Lyrics

I think some people are reading far too much into this song. Spoon has never been a band to really disguise the meaning of a song like other bands. They typically give it to you very straight, which is something I love about Britt Daniel. The song is clearly about a long distance relationship, if nothing else, "800 miles is a drive" should give that away. "The law enforcement's impressed you've last to this age" could easily be referring to the length of the relationship and how it has made it so long. It could also be referring to surviving without seeing each other "sexually", which is what the signal's a cough line is pointing out. Good song. |

I feel nothing but complete irony and a bit of smirkiness when I hear this song. Finding out true love is blind? Yeah no he isn't talking about love, that's just thrown in there for a laugh. He's just saying he pretty much wants em all, he isn't picky. Girls are great and he'll be the first one to tell you. I love this song, absolutely adore it. I'm female and find this song so gritty, dirty, raw and very sexy! Do I care he's being ironic and talking about the physical features of women? Not in the least, somehow it is completely ok that he does.
But to all the romantics out there, he's not actually talking about love, unless you mean the love he has in his pants. The love in his pants really is blind though. :D |

| Zero 7 – Throw It All Away Lyrics

I could be totally wrong, but I sorta get this feeling that the song is about someone writing a song about something that at some time or another is rather meaningful to the writer. The speaker of the song is a friend sorta egging them on to do this, to write the song, even if the person writing doesn't want to. They are pushing them to write it down, even saying they will finish it for them. My guess is they are hoping for a hit and it does become one, even though they sell out because of it. They "throw away" their integrity, but hey, they have the money. Love the song. |

Seems to me the whole is it in your genes line would be referring to whether or not the person is homosexual, but hey, that's just me. If the writer of the song is giving meanings to it that contradict, that is rather confusing. They could possibly be trying to confuse us, though the idea that it is about a guy whose wife has left him for women makes a lot more sense than anything else. But then again so does a gay man being in love with another man who is refusing to admit his love. Denial. |

| Jon Brion – I Believe She's Lying Lyrics

|
Don't let this cheery tune fool you; this is a very bitter song. At least it is in my opinion. Basically, he is judging the relationship as a failure before it even starts because he thinks she falls into some sort of dating pattern he himself is stuck in. By the time he realizes what is happening, it's too late, the game has already begun. Though really, isn't he just giving her an unfair advantage? He assumes just because she is like someone or reminds him of people from the past, she will lie to him, treat him the same way they did. I feel sad for the people in this song to be quite honest. Not sure if it is autobiographical, but if it is, that's a shame. |

| The Shins – Gone For Good Lyrics
|
In response to bakismaki, I feel that
"You want to jump and dance
But you sat on your hands
And lost your only chance"
Is saying the girl wanted so much more but she was too afraid of herself. I feel he is venting, going through some of the reasons he left. I have known from past relationships and people I have known, it annoys men (a lot of them anyway) when women don't just go for what they want, instead they just sit around waiting for their man to do everything for them. He doesn't want a woman like that. I think this is also evident when he says "and stop floating around". She's just wandering through life with no clear path. All she knows is she wants this guy.
He is telling her to go back home, back to your friends and family, and stablize yourself, the relationship cannot work unless she is stable. From my interpretation, he clearly feels she is very unstable. |

I absolutely love this song. It actually has a tendency to bring me to tears on occasion. The song is a narrative about a man who never really made anything of himself even though he felt he would. He wants to change but he really just does not have it in him. He sees himself as completely unimportant and just sorta blending in with the background of life. Sad story really.. |

| Koufax – Let us know Lyrics

Maybe I'm taking this song too literal, but I think it is about someone coming out. The person the song is about is from a small town where homosexuality doesn't exactly get annual parades so they move as far away as possible, start a new life, and forget completely about their past life. They completely surround themself with the new life, working, forgetting so they don't have to deal with the pain of leaving. This could also work for just someone who is different from everyone in their hometown and wants to run away as well. |

I sort of imagined the line "Will you remember my reply, one finger parallel to the sky" to imply he's blaming the ex for the problems, no, it was you, not me. But thats just me. I never really imagined it to mean "fuck off" or "get away from me". It might also be him referring to pointing to the door, get out, you're not welcome anymore. |

| The Shins – Girl On The Wing Lyrics

I think this song is referring to a couple that basically had all odds against them. I am not exactly sure, but I can guess that maybe they were too young, or at least others thought they were.
"but we've been backed against
all nature's walls far too long."
and
"and let the gluttons fill themselves with all the worst of the gory ninties."
People are talking and they find it funny or at least interesting, but still they both know they aren't really meant for each other either. The whole if you'd relented when I insisted and vice versa sorta goes along with that, they're both too immature to handle what they've gotten themselves into and maybe those other people were right. But then again, I could be way off base. Love the song. |

To me this is a very sexual song, "I hated when you looked away and I was slowly getting to it, and it didn't help alot when you would turn around and I was on the top adn you would say baby you can do it."
To me this song is simply about a relationship gone bad, rather bad actually, with a lot of bitterness involved. He's just trying to wash his hands of the situation, sorry it had to happen this way, lets move on. At least this is what I get from it. Either way, to me its still reallllly sexual. |

To me, I think of the Bible and religion when I hear this song. "Lofty tales so tried and true" to me are all those stories you grew up on in church. To me it is like saying if you don't want to bother, go to church, read the bible, become emersed in religion and don't worry ever again, even though he is mocking it. But he wants to destroy it, fly it all into the sea as he says. I agree with aladjustedoor, he was raised to be this perfect, Godly person but it is just too difficult to do. |

I like your interpretations Greyshoes, they make perfect sense to me. I am actually surprised to see that I'm not the only one who loves this song. It is my absolutely favorite Shins song. I am awful at interpreting things because songs such as this have their own meanings for me, and probably only me. To me this song is about people in general, or maybe someone in particular, and that people just really aren't that great. Such as the line "We walk and make plans in the dark or make haste with the boy who can't help but creep good people out." Obviously talking about someone with physical disabilities or even mental that even "good people" won't make the time of day for. We really don't always know what is best. People never change but they change daily. I've said that myself. You see someone after not having spoken in 5 years, they look totally different, they act different, you rekindle the friendship or even romance but then after a few months you realize nothing has changed. They are still the same person they were years ago, for better or worse, usually the latter. Perhaps the speaker in the song is telling all of this to someone but they just aren't buying it, as the end of the song suggested "You'll roll your eyes and say nice try." (I love that line by the way). And to comment on the Beatlesqueness of The Shins...the very first time I ever heard them I got a sense of the beatles, from the very beginning. I completely agree with you all on that. |

You left out my favorite line!
"Will you remember my reply

This song can be interpreted in so many ways, but one of my favorite parts of the song is,
"We'd like to go the distance
But not a one of us it going to
You see no one is wise enough to turn this ancient boat around"
-To me this is talking about being in a rut, doing things the same stupid way we've always done them but yet no one is smart enough to stop the chain of bad actions and habits. The pattern will continue because that is human nature. |
