It's pretty apparent what this song is about. Killing people and such or something along those lines. And, the talking bit that follows the music is rather creepy. Especially when you listen to what he is saying. Too bad that isn't posted here. It tells you how to decaptiate and de-limb a body. Hmmm.... |

The song is good, but the vocals are annoying. He should get rid of that voice effect.
This is probably based off of the Tiger personas they have. Seeing as how they're called Tiger Army, this song is probably about stuff like that. Maybe not exactly tiger personas, but just the fact that they use the name Tigers so they have a song about them. And, using it a s a metahpor to how they act or something like that.
Maybe he just wanted to write something about Tigers. I dunno. |

I liked this song right of the bat, just like all of TA's songs. It never had to grow on me, especially not this one. I listened to it over and over when I got it.
I think it's about his passion for the night, hating the sung, and such dark characteristics therefore making his love almost like a black rose. I don't know him personally, so I'm sure they're may be other things that make cause him to call his love a 'black rose' but those are my reasons. It being in the 'devil's garden' adds to the imagery and whole dark appraoch to his side of love.
I believe he is also stating that you should be careful becuase he is this way. It also sounds like their is someone he loves and wants to have love him back, hence the 'so pick the black rose and let it thorns cut you' line. And, becuase his love is 'black', his love will cut this other person in a way. Not literally obviously, but in a deep emotional way or something like that.
Anyway, that's what I think of when I hear this song. Very nice. |

Actually Nick said that he was reading through something (possibly lovecraft for all I can remember) and came across the word incorporeal. He pretty much just made a story about this ghost and his experiences as one. I don't really think this song is meant to be interepreted, but meant to be taken at face value: a ghost story and such.
People can write from a surrealist point of view, and not everything has to be from the point of view or experiences of the actual writer. I do it all the time if I ever write things. Writing from the perspective of a character or thing that has nothing to really do with yourself really. |

Nick said that the 'Orchard' is a metaphor for the place he grew up. I believe that he feels the same sentiments as robotnik: life goes too fast. Their are of number of lines in TA songs that are on that subject of life passing by and whatnot.
This song is probably all metaphorical for different memories and emotions he went through in this place that he grew up in. And what better setting to use in this early country-ish song then and Orchard? I personally like TA's country like songs. They fit in with their style and are just so peaceful and full of imagery. At least this one is. |

Not emo by any means. What the hell are you thinking? Anyways, this seems to me to be about naieve and oblivious young lovers. Those who know nothing about love and such, then get their hearts broken after breaking up or discovering the hardships of love.
Like a fire that arrives after they have failed in their relationship or something. I can't really express what I think about this song in words right now, but this is about as close as I can get. |

I have similar feelings and love fog and the nightime. They're just so peacful and inspiring. Nick hates the sun and always sings about the night and moon and such, so yeah...this songs is literaly about the fog. |

It sounds like this 'devil girl' was a seductive one night stand or something. The last line gives me that idea, and were it not for that last line I would think he was singing about a girl he's with that's a bit devilish or something. The line 'When I'm inside of--' I think has a very sexual meaning to it, but that's just me....hehehe. |

The bass line in the begining is the difference I believe. I don't have them on this cpu at the moment so I can't listen to them, but they are two different recordings so you're not crazy. And once I started wondering what the tilte mean, I got it right away. However, I didn't really bother wondering what it meant for quite some time though. |

I don't think this is about suicide at all. This has a lot of religious connoations to it in my opinion. He would throw away everything to live how he wants to before he dies. And the self-image that most religions force you to reduce to shattered glass by saying we are sinful beings and only here to serve a god or others and whatnot. Perhaps he would do anything for a chance to live without having to live up to someone/something's standards.
The heavily relgious have no fear of death becuase they think they will go to heaven or paradise or something like that; but a fear of life becuase they believe that they are sinful and always do the wrong things. They are afraid to truly experience life as it should be: however one wants to live it without living up to anyone's standards.
I think the angel lines might in chance be references to 'guardian angels' or other good forces that some believe guide or help people out these days. I don't believe in such things personally and I don't think Davey does either as he has written 'for no lack of seraching I can't seem to find one, for no lack of searching I can't seem to find much more then lies.'
This is how I apply the song. I'm not trying to come across as assualting religion, as I have said this is just my opinion. |

I for one am not a wicca or catholic, but did know what the song title meant becuase I looked it up. I always wondered if davey just made up words or not, but I know now that he usually doesn't becuase I look up all the words that he uses. I myselff am an objectivist, so can relate to some of the lyrics in this song. Such as the 'ashes fall and I'm rising up again' or 'with growing pride I'll wear my scars.' I will live my life as I see fit, and will take pride in what I've gone through and have yet to experience. |

I think it'd be awsome if this song was actually writeen about vampires. And Davey isn't gothic for whomever said that. Not gothic, just dark. Gothic people are always mopey and revel in depression, but I believe Davey has stated that he just accepts despair as part of his life but doesn't dewll on it constantly. He also said himself that he is not gothic.
Anyways, back to topic. I'm thinking the vampire thing is more along the lines of right, but I wouldn't really know. I'd hate to think this song is about conformity and stuff like that becuase those kind of lyrics are boring to me. A song about vampires pillowed in poetry such as this would be great. |

I stumbled across this song on Limwire. i was thinking their is no way AFI has a song by that name, but lo and behold they do. An unreleased and unintentionally recoreded song, but a song nonetheless. I laughed when I heard just like most everyone else, and yes it's catchy too.
As for the meaning, Jade said what it was about in the interview transcript posted before so I don't think an intrepetation on my part is warranted. |

Demonomania is the state in which one believes himself to be possessed of/by the devil/devils. When you read the lyrics it comes across as understandable when taken into this context. Of course Davey didn't write this, but that's what it means. |

I think this song is pretty much about the whole despair thing. Killing yourself is a possiblity but it never came across like that to me. More along the lines of despising yourself and feeling pretty much hopeless and useless. AFI does have a pretty desperate-like theme going through most of their music. |

Ill maggot, you say you don't think AFI would make a song about Satan? Well, what about their song 'The Devil Loves You.' Not trying to sound rude, but I'm pretty sure that song has at least something to do with Satan.
And as Davey has said before, he doesn't give the explanations of any of his lyrics becuase he wants them to be whatever us listeners want them to be. However we interpret them is their meaning. Of course all of our meanings differ, including Davey's, so I don't think their is any right way to interpret AFI songs. Kind of takes the fun out of it a bit. |
