| The Cinematic Orchestra – To Build A Home Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
Most obviously, the song deals with a sense of belonging and loss. Many other posters have interpreted this as the loss of a romantic partner. I suggest the song describes the "empty nest" that parents experience after their children have left the home. Note, although the song refers to a home, the song starts with "there is a house" ... a "house" is also a term for a family. In the case of Game of Thrones or any other story where lineage is important, people are sometimes referred to as "House XXXXX." The narrator of the story could be a mother or father (even though the singer, Patrick Watson, is male) as they describe what is a very simple house (stone and wood is as simple as it gets. Even drywall is considered a form of stone.) "Wooden floors, walls and window sills - tables and chairs worn by all of the dust ..." This implies that the house existed and had been in use before the child came along. "This is a place where I don't feel alone, feel at home" Is pretty obviously a reference to a place where the family of the narrator exists. "I built a home for you, for me" refers to the fact that parents often get themselves settled before having children. But in the end, the home environment they create for their children is something they do for themselves. It is in self-interest to create good homes for their kids. "Until you disappeared from me, from you." This is, at first, an odd statement, especially the second part. "Disappear from you???" Except, if you look at it from the perspective of a parent watching their "young child" change - no longer be a child and suddenly an adult. And if you consider a child becoming an adult, they suddenly have "disappeared from themself." The child is gone, but they are the same being. "And now it's time to leave and turn to dust." This represents the shifting of the perspective and narration. It's time for the child (now adult) to leave the nest and for the nest (home) to turn to dust, as it has served its purpose. From here out, the narrator is the child/adult. "Out in the garden where we planted the seeds, there is a tree as old as me." Hopefully it should be obvious that the concept of "planting a seed" and conception are one and the same. This "tree" this "climbing platform" is the child's growth. "Branches were sown by the color of green." This refers to the fact that each step (up the tree) were grown year by year as the child developed. "Ground had arosed in past its knees." The ground was trying to keep the child weighed down and in place. (Keep in mind the child IS THE TREE.) "By the cracks of its skin I climbed to the top." This is the child using the pain of childhood to mature and gain a better perpsective on the world. This child has not had a pampered life. "I climbed the tree to see the world." See as above. "When the gusts came around to blow me down - I held on as tightly as you held on me." This is a crucial lyric, and one of many people's favorites. This represents the point where a child is forced, often painfully - at the pushing and pulling of the "real world" to leave the nest and make their own home. Parents hold on to their children, but ultimately, they let go. They can't hold on forever, and they know it. "And I build a home for you, for me. ..." The finale of the song is the final realization that the home we build for our next generation is something meaningful but ultimately temporary. Appreciate the brevity of the important things and hold them with proper reverence. |

| Duncan Sheik – White Limousine Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
In this song I think Duncan is making a comment on America's current (and ongoing) obsession with money and power and ultimately a false "success." The white limousine attracts more attention than a black one, therefore chosing a white limousine in the song shows not actual wealth desired, but rather a desire to show off wealth aquired. The line: "A smooth and easy ride" represents our wish to aquire this wealth easily; without much effort. The line "Constellations of ceiling lights" may well represent our lack of consideration for nature on our path to wealth and fame (for example, oil spills, big corporations sacrificing the environment for profit.) The line "Hennessey and Naughahyde" represents our brand-name obsession. Hennessey being an (in my opinion) overpriced liquor and "Naughahyde" a form of fake leather. The stanza "Who's the smart guy at the wheel We're running out of gas He likes to wear a flight suit And fly around for laughs" is most likely a slant against George W. Bush. George Bush isn't known for his intelligence. The nation will soon face an oil crisis. Infamous photos of Bush in flight-suits. He was purported to join a B.S. air force unit to escape Vietnam service. The "incentives for the pharmacy" is probably related to our nation's addiction to prescription drugs to dull reality (in Sheik's opinion.) The last stanza: "Outside of the limousine Grown men they do cry The bill for seven hours Is worth how many lines?" Is probably about the growing separation between the rich and the poor in our county. I'm lost on the part about "seven hours" and "how many lines." That's all I have to say ... except: Could you idiots stop posting things like "OMG! This is the best song evar!! It reminds me of the time I went here and did this with my best friend evar!!!" This is about what the song MEANS.... NOT WHAT IT MAKES YOU REMEMBER!!! GOD! IDIOTS! |

| The Dandy Warhols – You Were The Last High Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
You guys kinda missed it… you’re breaking down his lyrics incorrectly. You see: I am alone but adored By at hundred thousand more Then I swore when you were the last…. What you should see is: I am alone But adored by a hundred thousand more than I swore when you were the last. Or even more accurately: I am alone. But I’m adored by a hundred thousand more than when I swore you were the last one who adored me. This is an ex who he can’t forget. He’s moved on, like we all do… have relationships and are loved (emotionally) and loved like whores (sexually)… but the problem is she was the last ‘high.’ She was the last peak of his happiness. Yeah, I feel this song hardcore… I’m sure others of you do too. Damn good song. |

| Télépopmusik – Breathe Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
Personally, this song is VERY ambiguous. However, I have my own opinion. I imagine a woman 'brought' her heart to a man... He took it, and left with it because of "something he saw through his head." I'm guessing that means he imagined some other woman would be better than her. Many people who have cried themselves to sleep after a bad breakup, and they wish they could just stop breathing and end it all. But you don't really have any other choice at that point in your life but to breathe and believe that a better day will come. That's what it means to me, anyway. |

| The Verve Pipe – Villains Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
As someone who works in major print media, I can say this: When a tragedy happens (school shooting, terrorist act, etc...) the criminal is spotlighted... not the victims. SEE HOW THEY TWIST AND SHOUT Is a reference to the fact that the only time you ever see the victims or families of victims on the 6 o'clock news is when they're in mourning... screaming, crying and falling to the ground in sadness. The subscription card falling to the floor is a jab at the media for their use of tragedy like this to make money. (Yay for Capitalism!) The blazing thighs are a reference to porn magazines that usually have a bag over them that covers the girl on the cover from neck to crotcch... leaving her thighs exposed. |

| Blur – Coffee & TV Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
The song is about opening up your mind and exposing yourself to the complex higher-thinking and experiences. I, personally, imagine a person who just traveled across the world… from Britain to less-developed parts of the world. On a quest for truth. This quest for truth has brought the traveler to the realization that there is a lot of evil and negativity in the world. Again, an ‘ignorance is bliss’ type revelation. I dare any of you to do some honest research and learn about the world… educate yourself. Chances are you’ll come back to this mind-numbing. Coffee and TV represent two things that many people indulge in which has very little actual value, and can act as a crutch. Coffee has very little nutritional value and TV does not inspire independent thought. |

| Guster – Fa Fa Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
One of my least favorite parts about the reviews on this site are the people who automatically think that the band members are talking about THEM specifically when the song is general. This is a general song about loving and accepting yourself for who you are and as you are. I have undergone dramatic weight loss, but am I going to tell you this song about overeating? NO! This song is about self-acceptance.... When you don't love yourself you might: say you're going to change leave and get away from your environment wait it out look for someone else to replace your self-hatred... They're all addressed in this song... You need to love yourself today, now, exactly as you are. Realize your imperfections and try to change, but love yourself nonetheless. |

Young girl sexually abused by her pastor father. Simple. |

| Jimmy Eat World – Just Tonight... Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
I'm pretty shocked at how wrong most of you are: Main character, guy, has some intense attraction to a girl, but she's self abusing with drugs, or is simply living a dirty life... she continues to seduce him. She pressures him into sex repeatedly.... she says "put up, put out or stay at home..." He secretly loves her but she's too screwed up to have a relationship, so he takes the sex... and immediately feels dirty afterwards. The music stopped ... the feeling went away is obviously post orgasm, when the moving stops... all the sudden you're back into reality and have to deal with what you've just done. "You know what happens when the lights back on The less you know the more you want " Probably means the girl likes sex with annonymous guys... the less she knows about them the more she wants to do them. |

| The Chemical Brothers – Galvanize Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
This song is about being confident. It's pretty simple really. Don't worry about what other people think, make yourself hard to their insults, crooked stares... Everybody, the whole world.... make yourself hard to other people's unfair opinions... Galvanize yourself. Get up, go, move, and do it. Don't let other people keep you from action. From Dictionary.com: Galvanize: "To arouse to awareness or action; spur" |

| The Chemical Brothers – Out Of Control Lyrics | 21 years ago |

You guys are both ^ ^ retarded. This is called "Song Meanings" not "OMG leik let mE tell U a story about this one time me N my frend wre lisning to tis song!@!!!1" So anyway, If someone REALLY wants to hear what this song is about, here is my interpretation. Young.... love..... passion. If you see the video, it shows a commercialized communist revolution/love story which really ends up being a commercial. That commercial is blended into a real riot/revolution. Mostly featuring young people. I'm imagining a young man who feels passionately about two things, his love and his 'purpose' perhaps a political party or something. And he is constantly torn between the application of his energy towards her "All this time I should be there with you." but he rationalizes this effort by thinking he's making a better country for the two of them. The most confusing lyric in this song: "It could be that I'm losing my touch, or maybe you think my moustache is too much." Shows that she's falling out of love with him because he can't give up his 'purpose.' The mustache reference is to Che, the leader of Cuba's communist revolution. Satellite is out of control is probably a reference to Earth as it satellites around the Sun. (The main character is unhappy with the direction the world is going.) Brothers of the sun is a term used to describe man, regardless of sex. (We're both humans) And the cold reference may be in relation to getting back to nature and not denying truths of life. (Communist philisophical thought.) Great song too. |

"Did I pass the Acid Test"? means: Now that my life is over, did I live a good life? Did I pass? Am I welcome in Heaven? |

Alieno is close, but I think he missed the deeper meaning. Obviously the Bros. were comparing a near-death experience to an acid trip. devil came by this morning said he had something to show me i was looking like ive never seen a face before here we go now lets slide in through the open door KEY LYRICS: pictures and things that ive done before circling around me im here on the floor im dreaming this and im dreaming that regretting nothing think about that Remember your life flashing before your eyes? That's obviously what's happened. He's not 'tripping' laid out on a couch... he's dying. He's dealing with his own death, luckily, he regrets nothing. He's being forced to think about all his actions in his life as he prepares for the end of it. The devil is the first real lyric in the song, clueing in the listener that issues of morality and mortality are being expressed. lord im shining are you hearing me like im hearing you ^ These are key lyrics because he's communicating with God. you know i almost lost my mind but now im home and im free did i pass the acid test x6 you better go to bed now my heart and soul they are free come on out For those who don't know, an "Acid Test" comes from the actual test where something is dipped into acid to test the chemical reaction. The PROBLEM is an "Acid Test" always destroys the test subject in the process. Get it yet? He's home, and he's free. He's reached the afterlife. Hence: "My heart and soul are free" How did you guys ever hear this song and NOT be able to tell what the Bros. were trying to get across? |
