This song always struck me as being highly inspired by Antony & The Johnsons. From the composition to the use of the voice to the choice of words, everything rings Antony Hegarty. Lines like "flowers for the rapture", "floating like a baby" and "ghost man" could all have been written by Antony. As is often the case with Ween, the song sits somewhere between parody and ode to its inspiration. Anyone else noticed this? |

I found this on another site, discussing the meaning of this song. It's from an interview with Harvey, and explains a lot about this song's meaning (and the way this whole album came about). This is one of my favourite songs of hers.
“I’d say for this record, for To Bring You My Love. The way I went about writing the songs and the way I went about recording the songs was all based on atmosphere and feeling more than anything. More than anything I’ve ever done before, any songs I’ve ever written before. The starting for quite a lot of the songs would be knowing a feeling that I wanted to try and create through music. And that came before anything like the way the song would be structured or the lyrical content it was much more the music and the feeling I would get off from that, and then work from there. And so recording this record was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life I think let alone the hardest record I’ve ever made. Because it was so much having to delve into getting into the right frame of mind to create that atmosphere that was specific to each song – varied with each song. And it’s just a very difficult thing to do. Very emotionally draining as well.”
“Teclo is somebody’s name. I don’t know who’s. I can tell you the source material for that was from the theme music for the “Guns for San Sebastian”. I’ve got a record at home, Ennio Morricone. And there’s a song on there, “Teclo’s Death”, and I thought ‘Oh, that sounds interesting’ and it’s just percussions, nothing else. There’s no instrument. And I just found it very sort of intriguing as a title. And after I listened to that album it kind of sparked of so many ideas around that song for me – that that’s what kind of went on to writing music for “Teclo”. |

Because he's throwing 'her will' in the current - "your will is in my hand" - at first, later on he feels like he can completely let go of the other person, so he throws 'her' in the current altogether? |

I think it does make sense: it's a prince kissing her hand, not a frog. He feels he needs to convince her that he's an above average dude, when in fact he only needs to convince himself. |

This song always gives me a very specific image: he's performing his songs on stage and a girl who's standing in the crowd grabs his attention. She's in the audience "by the border of the darkness" - that is: as far as the stage lights will reach into the crowd. So he can barely see her, but he caught a glimpse of her "in headlights", probably in between two of his songs when the big lights went on.
He knows he will probably not meet her ("But I'll never find the kid before she's gone"), but he also knows that she'll be somewhere in town ("There's a light on where you're sleeping") and it's almost like he's saying "well, I'm sorry that we never got to meet one another, but I hope that my music helped to cheer you up a little" with his "so I hope somewhere that troubles will be gone".
I could be entirely wrong, and the rest of the lyrics don't really fit this story, but I still like to think this could be the meaning of the first verse and chorus. |

For me, the line "A circus tent and all the folding chairs fit in an old coffin for travel" has always meant that when you die, the whole show that was your life disappears with you and your coffin. As magical as a circus show can appear, with its clowns, animals, jugglers and whatnot, in the end it's just a tent and a bunch of folding chairs that are put in a box, and all the magic is gone and forgotten.
Or maybe it's a little less literal, maybe the circus tent is the human skin and all the folding chairs are our bones, all that is left of us when we die, and however magnificent you or others might have thought of you, it all fits into a small wooden box. The idea - however - remains similar than with the more literal meaning: when we die, all the magic that made our life into what it was is instantly gone, and you're left with just the empty shell. |

The copper going green is quite obvious, as copper turns green over time when exposed to oxygen. It indicates he's been waiting for her for quite some time, and he adds to that idea by starting the line with 'hurry'. The crown to me means that he's trying to make her see him as a king, as some noble and good guy, instead of the sad little stalking ex-boyfriend that he probably is to her. "I can be your king, but you must hurry, for my crown is coming apart". Something like that. |

I think the 'sirens' might refer to Greek mythology, since the backing vocal that comes in with this line sounds like I imagine these so-called sirens would sound. They are described as seductresses who lured men to their island with their singing, which could very well fit with the theme of prostitution that bruise violet mentioned. Prostitutes standing on the corners of streets and luring men towards them with their looks/clothing.
Could also be the sirens of police cars/ambulances, though. |

Pretty sure he sings 'blood is fake, so I have heard' in the part about the bulls. I think the line before that is something different as well, but can't really make out what. Great song, anyway. I might like the new album even more than the first. |

I absolutely love the way she sings "He said it's all in your head and I said so's everything but he didn't get it". |

I just came here to post what slow learner said in his first paragraph. Pretty sure he sings 'there ain't no cowboy in my hat', as in: he's wearing a cowboy hat, and he'd like his 'babe' to think that he really is a cool cowboy kind of dude, but the runner knows that he really isn't and all he wants is to tell her. So, he must die.
One thing which I think is interesting in this song - and which hasn't been mentioned as far as I've seen - is that the names of flowers he uses - daisy, lily, rose and jasmine - are all girls' names; Daisy, Lilly, Rose and Yasmin. And of course this is only an assumption, but I think that they could be ex-girlfriends. So, the runner, the spy and the leak are buried in the past, with his ex-girlfriends. And ultimately, what I think he is trying to convey here, is that the spy, the leak and the runner are actually not other men, but are parts of him that he's trying to dismiss. He's trying to conquer the heart of this girl, and in order to do so, he must appear tough and cool and nice. Therefor, he must get rid of the part of him that wants to be honest and tell her that he's weak and uncool and not all that interesting.
An amazing song. |
