Silverchair – Straight Lines Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about Daniel's anorexia. The first verse is about him in the hospital due to his sickness, not recognizing anyone, and trying to figure out why he was lucky enough to live after passing out from hunger. The second verse is him moving past his illness, saying that he feels better and there's "good will" inside of him.

Something I will never forget
I felt desperate
And stuck to the marrow
Invisible to everyone else
I'm a sex-change
And a damsel with no heroine

Is very literal, it speaks about how he's just skin and bones, androgynous due to his figure, and how no one could notice his growing problem.

I don't need no time to say
There's no changing yesterday
If we keep talking and
I keep walking in straight lines

Daniel is stating that he's moving past his illness and will stay strong and if he stays distracted and he'll continue on despite his past.

Ever watch the ending of "The Notebook"? That's what this song is about, simply put.

Pink Floyd – The Final Cut Lyrics 17 years ago
I wrote a paper about this in college, it was quite enjoyable to write about something you actually care about, for once. Essentially it's like "The Wall", and getting past the obstacles guarding his heart (the dogs, the cameras, the shotguns, et all), you might actually see the true Roger. Inside that, he spills his guts about "making love to girls in magazines" and his sexual repression and depression, then speaks of his ex-wife, wondering if she's sleeping soundly after her conversion to Christianity, and wonders what's wrong with himself, saying "could anybody love him? or is it just a crazy dream?".

He simply asks "And if I show you my dark side will you still hold me tonight and if I open my heart to you and show you my weak side what would you do?" He doesn't trust anybody at this point, thinking that everyone is out to get him.

The last verse is the most poignant, where he speaks of "tearing the curtain down" and showing his real self. He holds the blade, prepared to cut the curtain down (not suicide), but then a glimmer of hope and anxiety comes over him and his wall is built back up again once the phone rings.

Godley & Creme – Cry Lyrics 17 years ago
A beautiful 80's song. This one is simply about being hurt by someone and how they have no idea of the pain they're causing. He mentions cheating and lying, and him crying because of it. Excellent song.

Genesis – In Too Deep Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm definitely going to agree that I think this is a love song about a past lover trying to keep in touch with Phil. He can't stand the pain of loving her yet not being able to have her again, and he's remembering all the things they did and said, if it was his fault, and the way that she's leaving him. A great song.

Bouncing Souls – Break-Up Song Lyrics 17 years ago
After I had a break up with my girlfriend I listened to this song and felt I was renewed, it's a breath of fresh air, a clean slate, and a great song to empower yourself with.

This was pretty much me and my buddies' official "cruise and listen to music" song during our senior year of high school. Perfect.

Fastball – You're An Ocean Lyrics 18 years ago
I like the statements in this song about how the ocean is so tormenting and he's so fragile, it seems as though he's just saying he's just an island in the middle of something bigger, even possible spanning other "islands", and that he's caught up in the middle of his feelings for her, and she seems to not even care.

Pink Floyd – The Final Cut Lyrics 19 years ago
The song is spoken about by two people. Roger first starts off talking about a war veteran who has gone somewhat senile after his WWII experience. The second verse is Waters describing himself and what lies underneath his "Wall", the facade he shows to everyone. The third verse is him expressing doubt about whether or not he can show it to someone and what will happen if he does and the consequences of it. The last verse is the war veteran about to commit suicide, but he chooses not to when he hears the phone, a faint light of hope, and a sarcastic look into how easily he can be persuaded from making "the final cut". Essentially, the song is about being scared and lying to everyone around you and at the same time needing them to be close, but not too close.

Barenaked Ladies – It's All Been Done Lyrics 19 years ago
It's a song about time travelling or immortals in love. The first verse is about the two of them getting together in ancient Rome, then splitting up in the Old West days because the girl gets bored with the relationship, then in the future, the guy is still in love with her even though she never cared for him that much, seeing her on The Price Is Right. The song is simply about loving and losing, and the unrequited love one feels afterwards towards the one who left the person.

Sean Lennon – Dead Meat Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about Sean telling his ex-girlfriend (whom he wrote the album about after she cheated on him with his best friend) that she's, metaphorically going to get what she deserves. Think of The Beatles "Run For Your Life" if you need any further thought, it's pretty straightforward.

Meredith Brooks – Bitch Lyrics 19 years ago
These comments, and this song, once again proving why 98% of women aren't worth anyone's time. Thank god MY girlriend isn't a self-proclaimed "bitch" like most of you children.

Underoath – Writing on the Walls Lyrics 19 years ago
It's pretty straightforward, he's discussion a relationship that's ended and he's saying they need to talk it over and work things out. In the end he says "I hope to god you come down". He wants this person to realize that they were the one who made the mistakes in their relationship.

On another note, this is one of two or three decent songs on this album. What happened to the Underoath that was fun to listen to?

A Wilhelm Scream – The Soft Sell Lyrics 19 years ago
Probably AWS's best song. The song is about a couple, and one of them is wondering if the other is "ruining" them, emotionally or ethically, summed up in the line "In a bed for liars, can we be true for once?/Am I the ruiner of you too much?"

Gwen Stefani – Cool Lyrics 20 years ago
m_modano190, you're an idiot. dawnofthedusk and gartz said it best. This song has a very sad feeling to it, yet also happy at the same time. The song is, to the untrained eye, a song about being "cool" with your ex. But subtly yet masterfully laid hints are all over this song that suggest something else. First of all, there's the lines "Look how all the kids have grown, oh/We have changed but we're still the same". This to most people is just another line about being older, but in reality it most likely means that they haven't changed, that they ARE still the same, and their feelings are still lingering.

However, the most prominent and telling line is "And I'll be happy for you/If you can be happy for me", meaning that they'll only be "cool" out of mutual agreement, and that both really wish things could have gone different, or as gartz said perfectly, they were "really close and deeply passionately in love and were loved back in kind, it will NEVER be completely cool."

They're not cool.

The Shins – New Slang Lyrics 21 years ago
One thing I hate about the Shins is that since everyone has seen Garden State that they're into the 'Indie' scene and they're 'Shins fan No. 1 and that only they know about them. Probably one of the best bands with one of the worst fanbases in years. Hopefully they don't implode due to the shittiness of the culture they prompt, which, yes, does matter to artists.

The Beatles – The End Lyrics 21 years ago
Also this song is great because of the Beatles' alternating guitar solo parts, going George, Paul, John, in that order through the middle of the song. George has the rocky first part with lots of bends, Paul's are the squeaky clean middle solos with lots of high notes, and of course, John's is the simple, grungey notes at the end.

This was the last song on the last album recorded. A very fitting end that summarizes everything what The Beatles were and stood for. Rocking, and of course, love.

The Beatles – Anna (Go to Him) Lyrics 21 years ago
I believe it is not only a song about Julia, John's mother, but also a simple song about a girl named Anna that he loves, but wishes only that she does what she wants, and that he will give her the choice of who to be with. Heartbreaking, but beautiful.

The Beach Boys – Wouldn't It Be Nice Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is about a couple that cannot stop talking about how they wish they could get married so they could be together always, but are too young to do so. This song has no relation to Brian Wilson's personal life at all. Masterful work on Wilson's part, and just another excellent cut from the flawless "Pet Sounds", arguably the best album ever made, and TURLY underappreciated.

The Beach Boys – Caroline No Lyrics 21 years ago
This song isn't about being dumped, it's about Brian and a girl he has gotten pregnant and her change, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Mostly he describes how she has changed in her looks.

Taking Back Sunday – A Decade Under The Influence Lyrics 21 years ago
"Sad, small, sweet, so delicate", if it hasn't been pointed out already. Man, people suck at transcribing lyrics on this site. This song is about a girl the lead singer drives home, and his feelings that he's about to get something going that he doesn't want to, but he's afraid to have sex with her, though his sex drive is great.

Pulp – Disco 2000 Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is completely crushing, it's the classic story of how two people were so close together, but when the time to make plans and decisions in their lives (popularity, dating), they went in opposite directions. Later, though they come to talk to each other occasionally:
"I used to walk you home sometimes but it meant
Oh, it meant nothing to you, cause you were so, popular "

Later he talks to her again, and they agree to make a pact to meet up in the year 2000 at "2 o'clock, by fountain down the road". Sadly, she's gotten married, and had a baby, without ever realizing his unrequited love for her. It could have been him with her, but fate had different plans, leaving him to probable bachelordom for the rest of his life do to his sadness and yearning for Deborah. The song never states it, but the reference to the baby and "what're you doin' Sunday baby" may mean that Deborah and her husband have split, and that a new beginning might hstart between the two. Or at least that's what I like to think. :)
