This song is about an affair or perhaps a rash sexual encounter. The only reason I could think of that explains the title is that "Chocolate" is an aphrodisiac, and what else could be something one is "sorry" for but "enjoys at the time" but sex, be it in an affair (explaining what he's sorry for) or an impulsive act (getting the woman pregnant could be something to be sorry for)? "A simple mistake starts the hardest time" in a relationship, if you cheat on someone or, again, if the woman gets pregnant. The second verse, which goes "You're the only thing that I love/Scares me more everyday," depending on who you think the song addresses, the woman he had the affair with or the woman he was going out with, means that after the tryst, he's fallen for her in a deeper way or that he's come to regret what he's done, respectively. |

The last part of the song, where the singer begins to speed up and the music builds up layer by layer, is just profoundly touching. "Now you wonder why the notes are always bruised and bent You think that it's your song but it's your instrument" This song is probably my favorite off "Every Night." |

I stumbled upon this song sampling the Wicker Park soundtrack on amazon.com, and then I ended up buying his CD. This song is absolutely amazing. There is definitely a stalker edge to this, but only if one is already inclined towards seeing such things that way, much like The Police's "Every Breath You Take." One of the standout parts is when he sings: "Sometimes the last thing you want comes in first Sometimes the first thing you want never comes." So chilling, yet his most calm and melodious voice makes it sound so peaceful despite all the discord such a notion may cause. I'm in awe of Matt Hales and this song. |

In this song, all of the blame is placed solely on the guy, as seen in the second stanza. He needs to accept that it's his fault for letting the relationship end/go sour. This is emphasized by the strong choice of words at the end: "You dumb fuck." I can't understand why he chooses St. Francis in this song, however. Great song. |
