| Murphy McManus and SkaraMog why do you get so upset? Can't everyone have their own opinion? Even an interpretation doesn't really say what the person really thinks. Just because somebody says that they think the song is (could be) about drugs, doesn't remotely mean that RHCP themselves wrote it with drugs in mind or even in their subconscious. It's just that the words, phrases or emotions trigger associations of drugs in some people. Have you never seen an Ad on TV or in a newspaper which totally confused you and you thought "I can't understand why I should be inclined to buy this shit now." even though it didn't seem like the marketers wanted to trigger this reaction?? Please don't be put off by queer minds or original/creative interpretations or obnoxious utterances... | |

I fully agree to what Falazure said on 07-21-2006 @ 09:24:52 AM. I too think that this song can be interpreted as a hymn to cocaine. Here's what I perceived: "all aboard" he's somewhere (with his mind) where he's usually not; but maybe even 'throwing your resolutions all aboard' (not to do it any more for example) -- "stitch in time" altered perception of time while intoxicated -- "get yours... got mine" I already fetched some, don't you want to get yourself a little, too - so we can do it together? cause I'm greedy (when it regards coke), I won't share mine. -- "get square" not too sure -- "you could to it at the hippodrome" yah.. 'do it'?? huh? -- "slide back, trombone" slide back into old habits, and out of euphoria 'trombone' it to all your friends? just speculating -- because, "anybody got a tv home"; it seems to you that anybody is doing it anyway, while you're on it... (yes, I know what I'm speaking of, even though I've virtually no experience with coke itself) -- "when I pick up on that smell" the smell of coke, of course. you already figured that out. -- "pick it up and run like hell" from the cops, from yourself; OR because you desperately want to get home, open that bag/packet and snort it all in one go? -- "little woman save me some" ah, I heard that phrase daily when I still was with my stoner friends :-) 'can you leave us/me over a little for later? PLEASE!!!' -- "better get up on your run" maybe paranoia, which you can quite easily get on coke. but maybe just the cops again... or even "get some more, almost all gone"? -- "so much more than" it means more to me than what other people think when they're told what 'it does' -- "charlie's wakin me" you don't sleep very well after having consumed uppers. when you sleep directly after coming down, you often experience a very light sleep. I've heard that somewhere.. Moreover you have no trouble staying awake on coke and the like. -- "to my core and" additional emphasis, it not only affects sleepiness but concentration, etc., too -- "charlie's shakin' me" when you're on, you MAY have jitters (depends on dose). long time cokeheads may develop parkinson's because of dopamin deprivation in neurons (because there was too much dopamine for far too long, the synapses downregulate or simply perish. you can imagine what that means when there's no longer "too much dopamine" - there's WAY too little. hope that explanation was understandable and scientifically correct ;D) -- "and tell my story" cokeheads babble way too much. they feel they need to tell everyone everything about themselves (I've seen it happen!) -- "and charlie's makin me" charlie reforms the drug taker's personality when taken more often than a few times. the longer the (ab)use, the more acute (and apparent) this becomes. it's been reported that heroin and coke addicts often prostitute themselves or steal to get their fix. -- "and charlie's makin' me smile" this is obvious - of course it makes you happy. why would so many people fall for it, if it was otherwise? -- "move around like a scientist" it makes you hyperactive, hypermotivated - and smarter -- "lay down, get kissed" pretty clear; look into Sigmund Freud's 'ueber coca' writings, there's a poem. (I found an english translation: 'Woe to you, my princess, when I come. I will kiss you quite red and feed you till you are plump. And if you are forward you shall see who is the stronger, a gentle little girl who doesn't eat enough or a big wild man who has cocaine in his body.') -- "big picture and it never lies" you do get the 'big picture' while on coke. everything seems more lucid, clearer, easier and manageable. it never lies - you ARE very honest while ON coke. -- "big daddy... will advise" I suspect there are indeed a bunch of people who take 'charlie' to figure out solutions to problems. big daddy is the theme of authority, coke WILL 'advise' you to do stuff in the long run. remember: 'charlie's makin me' is only 6 lines above... -- "overready, in disguise" I think this is 'overready' and not 'eveready' because I can't find that word, not even on dictionary.com. overready fits in well. - hyperactive -- "sunset, sunrise" that part's been mentioned before, many cokeheads 'play their game' from sunset to sunrise. -- "my heart - your skin" my heart's racing (coke speeds it up), your skin looks beautiful/perfect (coke enhances and 'beautifies' vision) -- "this love.. I'm in" does he love the coke more, or the girl?? -- "we don't arrive without a surprise" you can be quite sure of that when you delve into the drug universe -- "you're right, i'm wrong" this MAY be an unconscious acknowledgement of 'his way being the wrong way' and the other person's world view being more appropriate -- "be free, belong" coke makes your mind quite free, but sets your body and your soul in chains. you 'belong' to it. -- "intimate sight has come into light" while on coke you may blurt out your most intimate aspects, because you DO get quite honest (not that that would be an advantage) -- I can't reasonably put the last verse into the coke perspective, though. |

KendoKai: i don't like the chorus-part too much, but the figuring it's about pregnancy is brilliant. for the heroin, see http://www.mydr.com.au/default.asp?article=2914 actually i get the idea it's about NOT BEING ABLE to get pregnant... not too sure though. |

"Just wondering: instead of 'bag of golden brown', could it be 'bag of gold and brown'?" as forbidden_snowflake already stated, "golden brown" is a slang word for heroin. it's used in other songs of other artists too. See e.g., "Stranglers - Golden Brown" (lyrics: http://80stop.tripod.com/goldenbrown.html) |
