this whole song seems like a coded message. i wouldn't take any of these lyrics at face value. no, there is something much more to it. I think if we can crack intervals we will be able to use that as a basis for cracking the rest of the song. I'll try my best and maybe my answers or questions to the lines of the part can spark a breakthrough. not trying to hate on DT, but look deeper into the lyrics. I'm not claiming that my analysis is correct. ask yourself who is the HIS in "his mortal wrath," then ask what are the "obstacles" and what "path" are they headed down,? what's the answer to removing the obstacles? AND finally, figure out what the heck "octavarium" means? {Our deadly sins}; {feel his mortal wrath} (could be a reference to satan) Remove all obstacles from our path (Christians, believers in Christ. but how?) ok i have to say this is a prayer/conversation with the Lord. just eliminate the lines and u can see some hidden dialogue within the song. from the first line and the Lord says "i analyze everything. i know what u mean" meaning that the Lord is telling him he always knows his true intentions for everything he does next line "i answer by questioning" "(your) all that i need" meaning sometimes he questions things church leader, etc tell him, but the Lord is the only thing he needs. the Lord speaks the next 3 lines and says "surrender, i want you." "i want you to see" "see all the sides, all the faces inside of me" Writer: "i'm not perfect, but that's all" Lord: "i see your lost" Writer: "this can't be everything" Lord: "I see that" Writer: "my canvas is incomplete, your color's everything to me. And my canvas will set me free" the next series of lines starts with a confession by the writer and ends with the Lord asking him to surrender and let him into the writers life. Writer: "my outline is solid, and made up of crime" Lord: "the things that you say just burn in my eyes" Lord: "surrender, i want you. find some comfort in the spaces between the lines" then for the remaining choruses repeat the sequences above. and if you're wondering? no i am not some religious lunatic, i just like to do a deep analysis of lyrics. |

this has to be one of the best songs ever made. anybody can associate with it, and the blend lyrically and melodically are just mind-blowing. The fine line being referred to is most obviously the path we take in our lives that lead towards happiness. Sometimes we drift from this line and we have to find our way back. sometimes we don't know which way to turn to keep on the narrow path. Sometimes terrible things happen on our journey through this path and we have to maneuver around the bad things in the way to get back on track. also, we may often make wrong turns or not know which way to go and we are blindly following a path, one which we do not know where it will take us. He's saying despite all the obstacles and struggles encountered on our paths, if we have faith and believe, we can overcome all these troubles and stay on the (narrow) path; a path which makes sense, and moves towards happiness and clarity. PS. there may be a more specific meaning, but generally speaking this seems like the correct interpretation. |

| after finding this video, done by a user on youtube, it was clearly describing the vt tragedy. Somehow this song got leaked from their new album Anthem for the Underdog, the video was posted about 3 weeks after the shooting. So i don't think this song was specifically written about that specific tragedy, but all of them. It just describing how an innocent kid is driven to the brink of insanity and then finally snaps and becomes a killer. He can't understand how so much hate could come from someone who was once just a little innocent kid. | |

Then the third part means he has still not gotten an answer of what his purpose is here(say it, tell me the point of our existence) and is going to end his life if he does not find out the truth. Actually i just figured out what the meaning is; one person is a christian the other is an atheist, and they challenge each others beliefs. Then the atheist thinks it's all "A love, lust, hoax." and the atheist seems to be winning the argument. His teachers and his parents crown his life hopeless and say that he will never amount to anything. He is the only one who tries to get this kids life in order before he ends up ruining it. One more note i'm not sure if he says heave or heat the silver hollow sliver. But i think heave would make more sense than heat because heave means to thrust forward; silver obviously means a knife; and sliver means slash. He is talking about what will happen if he doesn't staighten out this kid. I think in this case wasteland means neglected. |
