I've read Trainspotting AND Porno and thought they were both terrific novels. Nice assumption, though. I can see that brain power is one of your shining attributes. "since the film is based on the book the book will be better.." Umm... You've brought us full circle with that one. Let me try again: a book and a movie are two separate things, regardless of whether or not they are based on the same story. I agree with the following statement: "the book is better at being a book than the movie is at being a book"; likewise, I agree with: "the movie is better at being a movie than the book is at being a movie". "They cut LOADS of plot out of books when they make films out of them... and half the time they miss out really important things.. that is why the book is better! The original is always better!" How about this scenario: Bob authors a TERRIFIC novel and everyone is praising every aspect of it aside from one brief, 5-page chapter in it that was just rotten, everyone agrees. Naturally a bunch of producers want to tell this story on the screen, so they hire a screenwriter and advise him to leave out the part that everyone hates. By your rationale, the STORY presented in the book would still be better than the STORY in the film (note: I am not comparing separate entities here). I would disagree. The problem with people like you is that when you read a book before it is adapted into a movie you somehow feel smarter and so when the film finally comes out you get pleasure out of saying stuff like "that didn't happen in the book" and "the book ended WAY differently" to the people you are sitting with because they will be SO shocked that YOU, in fact, read a book! What I am saying here is that a movie is a movie and a book is a book and if you cannot appreciate or disregard either for what it is in the medium it is then perhaps you should not really be running around making blanket statements that are of no value. |
