I've heard 2 versions of this song. One matches up on this site and another has variations to the music + Davey's shouting, during the chorus, is different.
I can't make out what he's saying, but it's definitely not the same.
Anyone else notice this?? |

Yeah, it's about some sort of inner turmoil.
Hard to notice, gleaming form the sky, when you're staring at the cracks:
So focused on your problems (cracks) that you don't realize the positive (sun/gleaming from the sky.
Hard to notice, what is passing by, with eye low:
When you hang you're head (eyes low), you're not able to see the good things in life (while they pass you by)
Very honest song. |

Sorry, but I agree. Kill caustic's the best song and I don't mind miss murder 'cause I don't watch (m)tv or listen to the radio too much. New album sounds like the cure meets the killers, and (some) AFI but I hope they like it.
This song is so f'n good, it's actually my myspace song, I know big f'n deal but I like it.
Not hatin', just giving opinions. |

| AFI – The Great Disappointment Lyrics

Here's the link to the youtube video of AFI on TRL. As noted earlier, the cock asks Davey about the rabbits and he replies that it's a symbol of loss of a charachter in the video Miss Murder.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=45IG0_3coQ0&search=afi
He also mentions that they've been using rabbits as symobls in the past couple of years, Davey was (again) born in the year of the rabbit in Chinese Zodiac and rabbits are allegedly in the last year of their reincarnation stage = he'll have no after life.
He seems to have an obsession with this knowledge and maybe it really worries him or it's just something to write albums/songs about, who knows. |

I agree with the whole Chinese Zodiac thing and knowing Davey is a Rabbit (without reincarnation) he always thought he was promised an after-life... which is the "Great Disappointment" 'cause he will never have an afterlife.
"I can remember a place I used to go
Chrysanthemums of white, they seemed so beautiful
I can remember, I searched for the amaranth
I'd shut my eyes... to see"
He somehow has memories of past lives, chrysanthemums are from China, hence the Chinese zodiac and his beging stage of reincarnation?
He also mentions that he sees things in dreams, maybe his dreams give him hint's of past lives?
But it's obvious that he doesn't believe that he's entitled to a spiritual after-life.
BTW, he still makes references to rabbits in the Miss Murder video and so forth. So not just a concept album, he must really believe this stuff.
Go on youtube.com and look for video's of afi on (of all things) MTV's TRL. Some cock ask's him about the rabbits and Davey gives him some cock-a-minny answer... maybe some insight but I wasn't aware of the Chinese Zodiac theory when I watched this. I'll watch it again + just got Clandestine and that's supposed to have a lot of crazy stuff in it, can't wait to watch it. |

All these comments about relationships, love and having sex must be coming from excited little girls... and that's ok if that's what this means to you, but I agree that AFI are a bit more complex than that. That Chinese Zodiac (and other related stuff) makes alot more sense. Take the time to read fallchild9989's, long, post. That sh_t make alot of sense and ties some of it together, very deep stuff. |

After reading these lyrics, I also thought 9-11. The mentioning of Planes and burning wings (on fire), the ashes from above, the statues falling, the mentioning of arrogance (as most feel Americans are), Not sure how the rest relates but I didn't write the song either. |

Just saw an interview w/ Fat Mike put on by PETA and yes, he is a vegetarian and mentions that he has songs about animal rights.
Think about it, he's associating the features of animals we eat with the features of human beings, but clams don't have the same features.. so is it okay to eat them?
Just like Kurt Cobain said "It's ok to eat fish 'cause they don't have any feelings" - Something in the way. |

rainygayboy, it's been previously established that this is a cover song so don't bash Fat Mike. Where do you turn for your "actual political insight and criticism"? I know, you "watch the news!" right? Ever suspect that our news is a little biased? As long as the message is introduced, people can research on their own time. No punk song is going to explain, in full detail, all that is wrong with this country in 2 mins! |

Sounds like somone who feels that he's living for everyone else and not really himself. He becomes an alchoholic 'cause he can't cope with his life. I'm sure alot of us put on a smile and kiss some ass just to live another day, but really it's not ideal. This does sound like the "successful" American though.. Compromising yourself just to be labeled a "success". |

Great song, great lyrics, GREAT band. They are NOT sell outs, please stop already. Maybe things have changed in 20 + years, but they're not on cereal boxes or anything! I do hope they stay away from MTV, they have sucked all them magic out of music. Video's should be a product of your own imagination and not some dumb-ass director who doesn't even know what the songs lyrics are about.. Then when you hear a decent song, you automatically think of the f'd up video instead of what the song may mean to you. I live in MI, and I've NEVER heard NOFX on the radio or seen on MTV. I listen to different music than my "contemporaries", and they think I'm "old school" 'cause I don't listen to ghetto music. But they write songs that I want to live by and I'm glad they aren't getting pimped out by MTV and todays concept of radio. Let's not argue, just be thankfull that their fans take priority over money. |

These lyric's are NOT over the top, they are saying what needs to be said! I don't think this song is a "fun" song, someone is stepping up and trying to inform people of what's happening to our country. We have to admit that there are, many, flaws in our country if we want it to be better. I also feel like this song could reach beyond the scope of politics and include the "average American". This is difficult to sum up in one post, but just look around and compare our culture to a few others. America is not the fittest, but we sheild ourselves with money and our reputation. People just need to be a bit more concerned with our future instead of who's going to win a reality television show.. make sense? |

Enough. This is a great song, and if you think it's a "sellout" then you havn't been in a relationship before 'cause he is describing it to a "T". This is an honest song and not a "sellout". Get off your computers, video games and televisions then try falling in love, see what happens when it gets frustrating, then tell everyone this song is a sellout. Not all songs have to be about wars, besides relationships are wars of their own. |

Great song, tasty horns, killer intro and gets me pumped. Are the lyrics right though? It sounds, to me, like Lars says: "A sadistic hammer on my brain, branded with a number 'nother pawn in the game." No biggie, just wonderin'. |

This song is one of Blinks songs that really have substance and it's too bad that not enough of their songs do. It is a great f'n song, but sorry Blink barely has a trace of punk left in them. Dressing punk on MTV is the newest coolest thing, but these bands are not punk! Most of it is punk for kids. Good, safe, fun punk! This new "punk scene" is nothing more than a whore for the record industry and they'll pull the plug on this and move on to the next big thing soon. Listen to seperation of church and skate by NOFX. Fat Mike is dead on when he talks about the new punk scene! I like Blink, they are talented and it's not their faults that MTV & record company's are whoring out a scene that should have been more sacred, 'cause now these bands that were initailly punk influenced must tone down their songs if they want to get a record deal. Punk is not mainstream. It's ok to have been swereved by MTV and record company's, they are pro's at it! They are making the music now, not your bands, and that's just not fair. Sorry if I offend anyone, don't hate, just think for a minute. |

This is not a sell out, it's merely an early example of a serious problem with today's state of music. It's not The Clash's fault that MTV tried to make 1 hit wonders out of them, as they do many bands. They are to blame, they are the ones trying to tell everyone what is cool and what used to be cool. Look at how they make fun of some of the artists that have made them very successfull in the past. The Clash did not write this song for MTV, or for selling out.. Who would have guessed that a "sure hit" would be a song about the lack of liberties in middle eastern culture?? A "sure hit" is to write a, good charlotte inspired, song about you're high school sweet-heart dissin' you. The Clash are Punk! |

Ok, the album lists Armstrong, Fredericksen & Freeman as writers. This is a RANCID song, or they would have to list the credits for ripping it off from someone else. Ben Zenotto was Lars' friend, unless "Jimmy Cliff" new him too. This song is about the scene growing up. There is no indication, at all, that this is about the government! They are talking about music they listened to and places they went and so on.. I downloaded a SNL performance of this and Tim said "This song goes out to all the bands on Epitaph Records" during it. May or may not define the song. |

This song is sooo f'n good, it's kinda laid back but tim really makes it sound like he was best friends with this guy. It makes his plight very beleivable. I do have a question though.. In the lyric's it said Harry was a union worker in Flint, MI, but PUNKED posted that he worked on docks on the west coast, where did you find your info? I was thinking about looking it up, 'cause I grew up in Flint and wanted to know if this was a true incedent. Not tryin' to disrespect you PUNKED. |

This song is so f'n funny, it cracks me up! I agree that it's about meeting someone (Boston) who shares the same music background as he (LA) then discovers some stinkers in her music collection and has his doubts. But then saw "Christ on parade" and figured she'd be cool. And they go on to merge their collection and have two copies of their fav's. I haven't heard half the refferences listed and he'd probably laugh at most of my cd's.. but I bought a few of his (nofx) so he shouldn't b_tch! |

| NOFX – Dinosaurs Will Die Lyrics

This song is about the music industry. The La brea tar pits are believed to have killed the dinosaurs (to clear up the previous question), as bones have been recovered from the La brea tar pits. It's sad that bands sign big record deals when they're hot, but soon run out of steam and fill their albums with filler songs just so they can reach their commitments to their contracts. The industry dictates what is and will be "popular". Bands have to comply with what the industry wants if they want to be signed. This results in what we call "selling out", but then again there are some songs that I would never have been able to hear/enjoy if it weren't for major record labels.. double edged sword, I guess. |
