To clear it up, during the Blonde on Blonde session, after the recording of 4th time around, someone asked Dylan if he thinks that the Beatles will sue him because it sounds just like Norwegian Wood. Dylan replied saying that if anyone would sue anyone, it would be me sueing them for stealing the sound. Dylan played if for the boys just before they started to record Rubber Soul. Dylan had not yet gone to Nashville to record 4th time around. The Beatles beat him to release the song. -As quoted in Mojo magazine. |

We'll never know what Dylan's actual meaning is, in this song and many of his others. But that's the point, it's poetry. It's for the listener to interpret however he/she wishes. Each line means something different to different people. It's beautiful! All these comments are great and makes me imagine something new and different. I feel this song is timeless. Not only refering to the times of the early 60's, but for all times. Where have you been, what did you seen, what did you hear, who did you meet and what are you going to do about it? Dylan, in his symbolisms, is basically telling us the horrible truths of the world and society but is also saying that there is something that can be done about it. Pretty much saying that there is hope for humans to change, and there is beauty in this world(rainbow) but it's up to us to change our negativity and stop war, stop poverty, stop the evils of this world. |

Lots of references to the Bible. Easter, Saint Anne(Godmother of Jesus), negativity fails, Angel. Rue Morgue is a short story about a murder mystery by Poe. Seems to speak of temtation, things are not what they seem, fame and fortune seems great but once you get it, you're actually worse off. Melinda takes your voice for wanting to get with her. Looked so fine at first but left looking like a ghost: It looks good, it smells good but tastes terrible. Picking of the forbidden fruit ring any bells? |

The beauty of poetry is that you can interpret/imagine it in any way you please. For me, this song is about a person seeking a release from reality. Take this verse for example: Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship,
My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip,
My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels
To be wanderin'.
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way,
I promise to go under it. That screams to me that this guy is in need of a fix, badly. Im ready to go anywhere = give me whatever you've got...pretty please cast your dancing spell my way=give me the drugs, I promise I will take them. So many reference to drugs, magic swirling ship, streets are too dead for dream? Why would that be? Cause I can't dream unless I'm stoned...At least this is my interpretation. Amazing poet! |

Obviously could take it many ways but here's my 2 cents. Do want you want, not what you're told. Lots of drug referrences, Medicine, Plants, Maggie was planting the green = black soot. Trench coat, coon skin cap all govnmt. officials. The Weathermen were part of the Revolutionary Youth Movement within the Students for a Democratic Society. The group referred to itself as a "revolutionary organization of communist women and men." Great tune and an amazing poet. |
