Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 21 years ago
Well, JustBen, when one considers the meaning of songs in an open discussion area such as this, then opinions are bound to escape. What's wrong with that? I think it is great that people say what they feel, as long as it is pertinant. That's like saying that there should be no comedy in a drama because dramas are SUPPOSED to be serious.

.nevermind, while your interpretation is interesting, i think you are going a bit too deep into this song. i know it has been said a million and two times before, but Kurt never really meant for people to over-analyze his songs. There definately is a meaning, but it's just not as deep as it may seem.

The Beatles – Yesterday Lyrics 21 years ago
Visit_Romania, without the Beatles, there would be no metal. It's as simple as that. The Beatles have influenced EVERYBODY that came after them, either directly or indirectly, that's how amazing they were. I guess you just don't know enough about music to understand that.

JAYA, i respect your opinion, but i fail to see how this song's lyrics are dumb. Surely you have one, or maybe even several, life experiences that you can relate to this song.

I think this song is just brilliant. It isn't THE MOST COVERED SONG EVER for nothing!

Radiohead – Fitter Happier Lyrics 21 years ago
To me, this song kind of sums up the general feel of the album. A computer telling a human how to live. It shows that we base our lives off of something that is totally synthetic. I think OK Computer is about how we try to live our lives according to a standard, and that standard is completely pointless.

The remarkable thing about this song is that, even though the voice is computer generatrated, the emotion still comes through. This song is definately one of Radiohead's most powerful pieces.

Nirvana – Rape Me Lyrics 21 years ago
it is about a guy who rapes a woman, then goes to prison and gets raped. kind of a justice thing.

But, more than that, it was about the way Kurt felt raped by all the media around that time. He purposely made the riff sound similar to Smells Like Teen Spirit, since that was the song that pretty much started it all for Nirvana in the mainstream.

Talking Heads – Psycho Killer Lyrics 21 years ago
Who cares about classifications and genres?
Punk is one of the biggest abominations in music. Not the music itself, but the word "punk". Like l0ki86 said, "punk" refers to bands like the Sex Pistols and the Ramones. But the Sex Pistols never called themselves punk, the press did. Then it became a style of music, and the rest is history.

But, to me, punk is just doing what ever you want to, regardless of what other people think. When you TRY to act "punk", wearing chains and torn clothes and stuff just because that's what you think punk is supposed to be, then you are the farthest from true punk as possible. I think that someone wearing Hollister clothes because that's what they want to wear, without trying to fit in, is being more punk than someone spiking their hair because its trendy.

Therefore, punk is in and of itself a contradiction. It is the label of an idea that is against labels. I don't think punk has to be a style of music, or a way to dress, or anything like that. True punk is just a state of mind, and nothing more.

So, with that mentality, Talking Heads are punk. So is Radiohead. So is Elton John.

But, seriously, WHO CARES???

Pixies – Ana Lyrics 21 years ago
The reason its called Ana is because Frank Black thought that that type of spelling with the first letter of each line was an ANAgram.
He was wrong, though.
This is an anagram:

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 21 years ago
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" is definately a great song, but often it is grossly over-rated. Hell, Krist didn't even like it the first time he played it.
Is it a good song? Absolutely.
Is it the greatest song ever? No.
Is it Nirvana's best song? I don't think so.
It is indeed very catchy, powerful, and doesn't get old, but i think that Serve The Servants is more creative, About A Girl has a better melody, and You Know You're right exhibits the same amount of power, if not more.
Smells Like Teen Spirit is often the Nirvana song for the non-Nirvana fan. Jocks and preps listen to it and feel all punk. I see it every day, as i'm sure many of you do, as well. They sandwich this song between Avril Lavigne and Jessica Simpson on their iPod, and don't realize that they haven't even scratched the surface of this song or it's meaning, or any of Nirvana's meaning, for that matter. It really pisses me off that you can't listen to the radio for an hour without hearing this song, and then hear Ja Rule or other crap rap a second later. It also pisses me off that this is ALWAYS the "heavy" song that Djs play at dances, other than Yellowcard or Good Charolette crap. i've decided that if i ever hear this song in that situation again, i won't dance to it, because i'll be surrounded by other people who think they know what it means, but are totally clueless, and that type of poseur, trend-following prep-fest is the last thing that Kurt even intended this song to be associated with.

Anywho, this is what the song means, according to what I've read:
It is about teenage apathy, and the feeling that teenagers don't really care about anything, and that their lives are going nowhere. Krist even said in an early 90's interview "People don't care any more. Did you know that more people smoke marijuana than voted for George Bush? Think about it." And that nihilistic, rebellious attitude is portrayed brilliantly in the music video, a blatant mockery of a the typical teenage High-School experience. While explaining his idea to the video's director, Kurt said that he wanted "the pep rally from hell." Well, he certainly got it!
Aside from other semi-cryptic observations about teenage not-caring-ness, the song is a big pile of contradictions, as are many of Cobain's songs. After saying something genuine or insightful, Kurt often felt the need to make fun of it, or be cynical in some way.
Taken from Michael Azerrad's book "Come As You Are":
"In his songwriting, Kurt deals in extremes and opposites that animate the songs. One of the most famously obscure couplets in "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was "A mulatto, an albino/ A mosquito, my libido." It is really nothing more than two pairs of opposites, a funny way of saying the narrarator is very horny. The lyrics often loft an idea and then shoot it down with one little burst of cynicism."

While i never got the impression Kurt was trying to illustrate is, um, desires, i guess you could look at it that way. As far the title goes (and I think this was mentioned before), it comes from an encounter Kurt had with Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna. Also from "Come As You Are":
"One night, Kurt and Kathleen Hanna from Bikini Kill had gone out drinking and then went on a grafitti spree, spray painting Olympia with "revolutionary" and feminist slogans (including the ever-popular "GOD IS GAY"). When they got back to Kurt's apartment, they continued talking about teen revolution and writing graffitti on Kurt's walls. Hanna wrote the words "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit". "I took that as a compliment," says Kurt. "I thought it was a reaction to the conversation we were having but it really meant that i smelled like the deoderant. I didn't know that the deoderant spray existed until months after the single came out. I've never worn any cologne or underarm deoderant."

So there you have it. And, despite the fact that the whole "A mulatto, an albino" thing was supposedly about being horny, this song is NOT about having sex, regardless of how much it sounds like it (that is, however, an interesting obervation). Hopefully, this has given you a better insight to the song, and it's meaning.
