R.E.M. – New Test Leper Lyrics 21 years ago
I just wanted to say that this may be my most favorite REM song on my most favorite REM album (excepting maybe Nightswimming).

I think it's about someone who has real views on faith but can't get heard because they don't fit in with popular conceptions. Ironic attack on religion, because that's just what Jesus was.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that irony really is the shackles of youth.

R.E.M. – Be Mine Lyrics 21 years ago
What kicks me about the last verse is that not only is it religious symbolism, it's death symbolism (blood in a cup, the river Ganges, a light). So he's saying "I will be where you go when you die." Thats the best kind of romantic.
