In an alternate universe, The Manta Ray is a part of that same upper echelon as The Twist, The Electric Slide, and The Macarena. Very popular at wedding receptions. |

Also...this song is one of the best openers for a record if there ever was. It's the song Sonic Youth were born to create.
I don't know about the J Mascis thing, but Rick Rubin's beard would explain A LOT. Just listen carefully (...while abusing Nyquil).
Teens. Scenes. Amps. Alcohol. Rowdyness. Riots. Yeah....straightforward enough for me. |

A bit of a stretch, but I always wondered if he was speaking to the lonely computer nerds that found all the peices of the song all over the internet personally. |

What an amazing, amazing song. I think this song has to do with one person being wary and uncertain about love, while the other is surrendering themself completely to the other with no fear. The euphoric sound of this song has a very rushing, "rollercoaster" feel to it, so I picture this relationship in the song being just that...an emotional rollercoaster. In that context, notice how sparse the happier, lilting parts are from each other in between those wide, disorienting squalls of noise. Just magnificent. |

I'm pleased that out of all Swans songs, this one got the most comments (Two?! But still...)
I connected with this song when I was at a strange moment in my life. Far from home, in bed with a stranger, and thinking all kinds of strange and scattershot thoughts about existence, love, suffering, et cetera. Swans have been one of those bands to me that didn't just write songs with clear cut "messages"...more like dark snapshots of abstract but very palpable emotions with lulls and climaxes (Which is why this band doesn't have too many people guessing the "meanings" on this site, I fear). I love Swans so much. There may never be another like them. |
