John Mayer – Bigger Than My Body Lyrics 21 years ago
Looking in the liner notes of the CD, the "target area" of this song is the arm. I had no idea what that meant, until I realized that the symbols have meanings. (I just read Pullman's His Dark Materials series.) So the arm most likely means Strength. So this is a song about Strength.

John Mayer – No Such Thing Lyrics 21 years ago
OH my goodness, I'm 32 and totally get this song. When I was in high school, all your advisors keep trying to prepare you for the "real world." Have you heard this in high school or from your parents/guardians in some form or another? "If you don't get into a good school, if you don't go to college, you're not gonna be able to get a job, and you'll be poor your entire life." That is a load of crap. Real life is nothing like the way our "educators" and "guidance councilors" make it out to be.

I don't think Jammer's calling for non-conformity, I think he's trying to tell you to "be yourself." And that, no matter what happens, you're gonna be okay.

John Mayer – Why Georgia Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is one I'll be singing my entire life. I love that fact that he's singing to the state. Everyone questions their life at some point, at every age. As it's another song about insecurity, it makes me think he's a really insecure guy.

"See I refuse to believe" - nice homage to Sting & The Police. You can really see that he was influenced by them.

John Mayer – New Deep Lyrics 21 years ago
The liner notes label this as sarcastic. To me, this song has an incredible transition to it. The whole opening feels like it has a bitter edge to it. Like it's really angry. "I'm gonna find out just how boring I am, and have a good time." He's hurt, upset, and angry. He's full of emotion.

(I take my poetic license by singing "talk is the same cheap sh*t it's been.") So when he sings it this time, it's really dripping with sarcasm.

The next portion to me is what happens when all those emotions die down, and your left trying to understand why you feel the things you do. It's the time when you think with your head and not your heart. You numb your emotions to stop feeling them, so you can reason things out. "Numb is the New Deep." Stopping your emotions lets you think deeply about the things that are going on. All the things that would normally be really deep thoughts, like God and the universe, aren't that signficant because he's stopped his emotions.

The "I'm a new man" part makes me think of the time you figure it out. But your friends know you're just covering it your pain like covering up your body oder with a cheap cologne. It's masking your scent and pretending to be fine, that those emotions aren't there. Which, in turn, causes him to become insecure again and those emotions flood back into him. Because once you open yourself up to emotion, and stop being numb deep in your heart, those feelings come back. "Numb is the New Deep" but this time, instead of talk, we get "I'm over the analyzing." I think that means he's no longer able to think about it, because he's back to feeling it. "Stop trying to figure it out" I just picture him rocking back and forth on a chair clutching a book or a pillow. "Deep will only bring you down." You gotta deal with your emotions, instead of trying to cover them up.

I just get a sense that he wrote this when he was getting frustrated putting together the album. That, by opening himself up to emotions, he kept looking for the right words to express the emotions he feels. And that, at some point, you just have to realize that language can never completely express feelings. And so he named the album "heavier things."

John Mayer – Something's Missing Lyrics 21 years ago
I think this song is completely satirical. This song makes me laugh out loud everything it comes on! It's all about insecurity. A sense of security is what he's missing. Instead of realizing that he's insecure, he keeps thinking he forgot to bring something. Pure comedy!

All I wanted to add is the fact that I love him singing "I'm never speaking up again, I'll use my hands!" I think he's saying, "Fine, if I make her uncomfortable with my mouth, then I can use my hands to speak volumes to her body." Or if you want a more naughty interpretation, "my mouth is full, but my hands are free!"

Besides being beautiful music (written in New Zealand, how cool!), the words are just incredible. I really got the impression that the girl in the song was abandoned by her father. (I agree with Starrie)And no matter how close Jammer tries to get, no matter how much he shows her how much he cares, she's always putting up walls (i.e. the maze). So he can't get close to her. And he's finally solving her maze, because he realizes that it's not his problem, it's hers.

And therefore, the refrain. It's part of the whole "wheel" concept - "that I believe that my life's gonna see the love I give returned to me." Because this girl was hurt so early on, she's does give out her love. So she's not getting it in return. "Boys you can break. You find out how much they can take." But the boys are giving their love. "Boys will be strong." That they believe in the wheel. "Boys soldier on." And he's just trying to get it through to her that "boys would be gone without the warmth of a woman's good girl heart." (I sing good girl, poetic license. I like the way it ties young ripples to older waves.) And then he's saying that you have to love someone with all your heart.

John Mayer – My Stupid Mouth Lyrics 21 years ago
Jammer's lyrics are sheer poetry to me. I get this image of a high school boy taking a girl to a 60's style diner... the kind with the stand up paper napkin holders. Complete with paper placemats that you can flip over to the children's side.

This song sounds juvenile to me. Like a temper tantrum. "If I say stupid things, then fine! I'm never gonna speak again. Never, never, never, never! This is me not speaking! I'm still not speaking! Fine, starting now!" To be just liked and wanna be the funny one, is a juvenile type thought. Not everyone's gonna like you, and you're not always gonna be funny.

Jammer's wordplay rocks. Because of the "dinner scene" I always sing, "An inedible line was drawn" instead of indelible. Like he can't eat his way through dinner because he caused the rift by saying something stupid. And then, "I'd rather be a mystery than she desert me." I keeping thinking, because of the food images, "than she dessert me." Like she just immediately orders dessert, because if it's a bad date, at least she'll get chocolate cake. Or the other image of her taking apple pie and smashing it in Jammer's face.

Lastly, my friends and I have played "Table Chess" at diners. It's a game where someone moves the salt shaker in a very determined way. Another person moves the pepper shaker. And then other various things get moved, sometimes you hear "check" and eventually someone makes a move and says, "Checkmate." Usually when they're tired of the game. The losing side knocks over their shaker. (i.e. their "King" and spills a little on the table.) I was really happily surprised to hear table chess in a song.

John Mayer – 3x5 Lyrics 21 years ago
I love Jammer. Can't say it enough. When I first heard this song I had to figure out what a 3x5 was, and when I got to the words I understood he meant 3 inch by 5 inch photographs. This song is absolutely inspirational and conveys a sense of longing. The singer is lost in moments: snapshots in time; trapped in a static place; stuck in a situation that can't get out. And then trying not to view life through one's own prejudice and imposed self imposed lens. (The Metaphor of the camera.)

And then "You should have seen that sunrise with your own eyes. It brought me back to life." It's pure poetry. Inspiration "dawned" on the singer. "Today I finally overcame trying to fit the world inside a picture frame." The singer is letting go of his contrived images, and will let people be more than what his flawed eye can see.

This song, to me, is a longing for greater meaning, and an inspiration that one can transcend preconceived notions.
