I've read what Jon Anderson has said. This song has great meaning to me personally. It reminds me of when I first fell in love with, and began dating (living with) my now wife. She's from Canyon Lake, Texas. It's west of New Braunfels, Texas. New Braunfels is a old town settled by germans and has a european roundabout in the middle of town. Canyon Lake is in the hill country with lots of small mountains that regularly get fog around them from the lake. There are always brown eagles and turkey buzzards flying in a circular pattern out there. She's of teacher--of children of course. There is a place with dinosaur tracks called Dinosaur Flats about 2 miles from where we lived. The whole area used to be under the ocean. There are millions of deposits of sea life. I was born by the ocean in the summer and was 10 years old when this song came out. I moved to Texas at 24. I know that this doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but to me it forms a metaphor in my mind. It's a happy song. We need more happy songs. it makes me think of our first, spartan, years together. We're still very happy. |

Hey Steve, Parts like "Shoot the Mountain Masses" means hunting. "Get in the way as the tons of water Racing with you crashing thru the rudder.' some sort of of boating reference. The "grass sees" thing i think is about being like other animals, using their physical abilities to survive. The rest can be chalked up to Anderson's inability to speak in only cosmic debris. |

I thought forum was for people to express what they think the song means, or what it means to them. free country i guess.
This song is an anti-religion song. It's about people wasting they're lives going to church but not listening critically, and waiting for death
so they can have they're reward. Instead of realy living, they consign themselves to the belief that there is a better life in heaven, so why try. It also points up the frustration of those that ask the pointed questions about God, and get no real answers from those that hold high positions but really only know as much as anyone else. |

I'v e researched this a bit. This song has a very profound meaning. Khatru supposedly means "Your will be done" in Yemeni. I haven't found that.
It is a word used for a feminist writing group from the 50s - 70s. Anderson is talking about the life of Christ and
how the message goes all over the world, reaching even the most remote places like Siberia. It talks about how it has changed over time (gold stainless nail, torn through the distance of man) and even includes references to Islam (moongate climber). He's talking about how it was nurtured and kept alive by women under the nose of the cold hearted king. And, with the help of the apostles (Shelter the women who sing, as they produce the movement).
Sure, some of the lyrics are impenetrable, but the metaphor is the same. Please, actually read the lyrics. |
