Ok, so despite the fact that Jerry wrote the song, and maybe it is was intended to be about a girl, the lyrics are far overshadowed by Layne's situation. I think the song unofficially becomes about him. Anyone who has seen Unplugged cannot deny this. Their last show, and Layne in his frail state gets up on stage and says, "I'm down in a hole and I dont know if I can be saved" What the shit more do you need to be convinced that the woes of a departed love are completley and utterly irrelevant in pertaining to this song. Layne was not saved. This squable over who wrote what and who did this is pointless. Each memeber is crucial to the mix and success of AIC. If their songs were truly about broken hearts, then they would have been like every other band and toured more. AIC can never be whole again because a cancer ate away the group. And, regaurdless of the intent of the lyrics and songs it was far overshadowed by Laynes situation and most songs became ever so true about him. Girls come and go, but you only get one life and Heroin can seriously hinder that, which makes all the departed lovers take a back seat. Long live AIC |

I think it takes a level of maturity to listen to AIC. Also if you grew up in the seattle music scene like I did, AIC is a part of you whether you like it or not. I was never hooked on AIC until I saw Unplugged. If you actually see these guys perform, especially in unplugged, it absolutley cannot be denied. There is so much passion in every song, and I would honestly compare the enjoyment I get out of watching Staley and Cantrell to Page and Plant. Whether Heaven beside you is about a girl or whatever, its still the shit along with every other song AIC wrote. Pop is worthless and Britney can have her millions of fans. Any old corporate sponsored image with a recording studio and a thousand different machines can make a mindless pop album. It takes talent to make a real album. AIC is the epitome of talent, and I would take 50,000 fans who know that over millions who dont, ANY day. |
