| Tom Petty – Runnin' Down A Dream Lyrics

It's about the different stages of a journey through life in the context of a road trip. The first verse is happy, it's nice outside and they are singing along to the radio. The second verse is a little darker. It is raining, and he has to rub his eyes to keep his concentration. In the third verse, he puts the pedal down to speed up and can see the goal ahead. The entire song he is pushing toward the dream or destination of a road trip. |

Yea, this song is basically about two people who have figured out they don't really love each other and have "said all there is to say", but they both are looking at each other ready to go at it. When you listen to the song, you can hear Tom put everything into the lyrics. Another classic by one of the best ever! |

This is bout a guy's thoughts at a bar or party. Looking around at all the women for "someone to satisfy my needs". He's trying to play it cool, but he's kind of hesitate and doesn't want to scare her away. This song is a great drinkin song, because thats when we're all looking "for some good clean fun". |

The lyrics re definitely about a crime the band read about in the newspaper. I've heard them mention it several times in interviews. But the song isn't meant to be a downer. If Scott wanted the song to be depressing and tragic, the music would be completely different. STP did this with several songs. The lyrics aren't the point, they simply follow the music. This is a fact lost on bands today who use the melodies and rhythms to get people to listen to their whining, instead of focusing on the music.
I think this song is best live. It holds up when they rock out to it and as an acoustic. Not too many songs can be both. |

Who cares whether or not they wrote it with George W Bush in mind... The beauty of art and song is it can be interpreted by the audience. The song has a deeper meaning than any one figure. It has political themese and images, but it isn't a pro or anti Bush song. I feel the song is directed towards anyone who doesn't consider others in their decisions or who will do anything to control other people (that can be world leaders, military figures, or someone in your own life). |

I think this is about looking back on your life and wondering what went wrong. The song definitely gives the impression that while he was experiencing things they were fine, but now he's "stuck out in the desert", "with no fallen angel standing by". |

This song is pretty straight forward. Telling the listener to not let things keep you down and when tough times come, just look inside yourself. Everyone has had the feeling that the world in on their shoulders or experienced something they didn't think they could overcome, but everyone has the power inside them to rise above it. I also agree with the earlier post about Warren and Tim Reynold's version of this song... |

This song is definitely about losing control... The image of being on the banks of the deep end to me means you're standing on the edge of losing it and you know it, but you keep peaking down there. He says he lost his best friend and he is looking for a reason to go astray (change his ways). This is some heavy stuff and further illustrates why Gov't Mule is one of the greatest bands in the world! |

I like the beginning of the song with the Heiniken reference. It is a strong message of how alcohol and addiction can affect the people around you. Ironically, me and my buddys always drink while we listen to it. |
