The Futureheads – Favours for Favours Lyrics 18 years ago
This new album is just great innit? I'd say this song is about dancing. You could pretend it's a metaphor for something but I think it's just about dancing

submissions
The Futureheads – Thursday Lyrics 18 years ago
I like this one, it sort of sounds a bit Phil Spector-ish. Don't know what it's about. Their slower ones work well I think, like Danger of the Water on the first album. Gives a bit of variety from the faster stuff

The Futureheads – A to B Lyrics 18 years ago
When I see 'em at Kentish Town last week matey-boy introduced this song by saying "this is a song about being lazy". So you've all got it right, except for this lad saying arcade fire are good when they're just a bunch of yelping idiots.

submissions
The Futureheads – Fallout Lyrics 18 years ago
After first few listens this is probably my favourite track on the album so far. I think it's about falling out with your missus but with some nuclear-fallout metaphors thrown in.

The Jam – Down In The Tube Station At Midnight Lyrics 18 years ago
So I'm the only person who thinks the lyrics are a bit naff then? "They smelt of pubs and wormwood scrubs"??! and "the smell of brown leather, blended in with the weather". Come on, it's not exactly poetry is it? Well I didn't think so.

submissions
Steely Dan – Show Biz Kids Lyrics 18 years ago
The Super Furry Animals sampled the line "you know they don't give a fuck about anybody else" about 80 times in their song The Man Don't Give a Fuck, which (when they play it live) ends up as mental techno. When you listen to this song you can kind of hear the hypnotic rhythm in the chorus that they got the idea from. Steely Dan invented techno!

The Cars – My Best Friend's Girl Lyrics 18 years ago
True story: I used to work with a bloke who's wife had dumped him to run off with his twin brother. This song came on the radio and he was heard singing along quietly - "she's my brother's girl..... she used to be mine". Ouch.

The Cars – You're All I've Got Tonight Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a great tune. A big stomping anthem of a song if you ask me. Which no-one did.

The Futureheads – Area Lyrics 18 years ago
What the bloody hell is this song about? It's so catchy but the lyrics are so daft! Are they poking fun at people who live in rough places or what? I don't get it!

submissions
Super Furry Animals – Something For The Weekend Lyrics 18 years ago
What makes you say it's about alcohol? I would have said the first verse is definitely about dropping pills, but the second is a bit more ambiguous - coke? Can't really see how it relates to booze.

submissions
Duran Duran – Anyone Out There Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is brrrrrilliant........ I discovered it just when my (ex) girlfriend stopped answering my calls. Ah, great days.

submissions
Super Furry Animals – Gathering Moss Lyrics 19 years ago
One of the things that makes SFA great is the fact that they have little gems like this all over their albums; tracks you don't necessarily remember particularly, but that are unexpectedly brilliant.

submissions
Blur – End of a Century Lyrics 19 years ago
i.am.me - yes, Damon Albarn is the singer in blur and Gorillaz, and their new album's great.

This song is great, bit of a nostalgia trip too. The golden days of britpop.

Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine – Sealed With A Glasgow Kiss Lyrics 19 years ago
There can't be many songs where domestic violence is described from a mans perspective. This is quite sensitively done aswell. Very brave, and I think it works.

Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine – The Only Living Boy in New Cross Lyrics 19 years ago
That's interesting, I never heard that before.
Carter are such a great band and so few people know who they are these days. When I heard them at the tender age of 9 I thought it was great to hear a band singing in an english accent about putting someone in a half-nelson. My opinion is pretty much the same now.

Maxïmo Park – Apply Some Pressure Lyrics 19 years ago
Strokesman, you are talking rubbish. When I *randomly* bought the single in january I hadn't heard or read a single thing about Maximo Park, and I thought that they were clearly a good band and would probably become popular and I said so at the top of this page. And I was right.
What's your problem?

submissions
Hal – What A Lovely Dance Lyrics 19 years ago
Well you're all a miserable lot - Hal are brilliant and no-one's bothering to say it. Except me.
I like this song, I think it's meaning is fairly self explanatory.
The album is really good and I highly recommend it.

Just heard the album version of this and it's got an extra verse.
And the libertines are over-rated.

The Smiths – Barbarism Begins at Home Lyrics 19 years ago
AHA! Found it at last, had this on video as "a crack on the head" and couldn't find it anywhere.
I think it just goes to show you what a great bass player Andy Rourke was. The live version sounds better than the record

submissions
The Smiths – Miserable Lie Lyrics 19 years ago
"I look at yours; you laugh at mine.."
Love it.

submissions
Pulp – Common People Lyrics 19 years ago
frozen in fire, I disagree - the full length version is better.

Voted best song of the nineties by radio one, and who could complain about that? I'm not a massive pulp fan but this defined the decade for me.

submissions
The Doors – Love Her Madly Lyrics 19 years ago
I like this song but have a bit of a problem with it - has anybody heard of the cheeky English duo, Chas and Dave? Cos that bit from "all your love is gone, so sing a lonely song..." sounds JUST LIKE CHAS AND DAVE. Sorry, but it does. Other than that it's a great tune.

The Clash – Clampdown Lyrics 19 years ago
At the tender age of 18 this song inspired me to walk out of my factory job and, erm, go on the dole.

Live the dream.

NB:I am now back in full time employment and frequently wear blue OR brown. I don't really find they work well together. Punk's not dead..?

submissions
The Smiths – Girl Afraid Lyrics 19 years ago
I thought this song related really well to the situation I was in recently until I finally decided to say something to the girl I imagined was 'afraid' of her feelings for me. Turns out she wasn't even vaguelly interested and fancys her boss. Thanks a lot morrissey. It's a bit like when I quit my job because of the lyrics to 'working for the clampdown' by the clash. Fat lot of good that ever did me...

Sorry, I'm wrong - it's in Night Vision.

Super Furry Animals – Keep The Cosmic Trigger Happy Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm SURE there's a line in here somewhere that says "I exist in flexi-time". Or is that a different song? No, I think there's a verse missing.

So I was nearly half right.

The Smiths – I Won't Share You Lyrics 19 years ago
Well whatever moved Morrissey to write it I like it. Especially the line "Life tends to come and go.." and the bit at the end, "I'll see you somewhere, I'll see you sometime.."
Makes me think of someone I haven't seen for a few years.

submissions
The Smiths – Unhappy Birthday Lyrics 19 years ago
It's my birthday today and I listened to this song this morning. It made me feel quite happy really. When you think about it, it really means "You left me and I'm bitter cos I wish you hadn't".

What a great line, what a great sentiment. What a great fucking band.

What's counterpoint? Is that when they're all singing different things at once?

submissions
Super Furry Animals – Sidewalk Surfer Girl Lyrics 19 years ago
Is this based on anything in particular? Was there a girl called Patty Whitebull who fell asleep for 15 years?

Morrissey – Suedehead Lyrics 19 years ago
I have to say I agree with mdeaves - there is plainly no reference to the gender of the subject, and morrissey is not an out-and-out gay so stop with the lazy homosexual conjecture!
"Suedehead" was a brief fashion in the late 70's and early 80's. They were kind of like toned-down version of skinheads; similar fashion but a tiny bit more hair. Perhaps the young mozza had a fling with a suedehead (it was a male and female fashion, incidentally) or maybe he was a suedehead himself at some point, or maybe he just liked the name.

You know they had to pay the royalties to Jagger and Richards for the ruby tuesday line?

submissions
The Stone Roses – Where Angels Play Lyrics 19 years ago
I just bought "Time is my Everything" by Ian Brown the other day purely because it has a version of this tune on it. I have to be honest, 15 years on he doesn't do it so well AT ALL. And he's changed the lyrics and made them, frankly, rubbish. How the mighty have fallen.

In it's original form it's a top tune, like everything they did before the fairly average One Love. I think I like them mainly cos they kind of blew it anyway.

submissions
The Stone Roses – Fools Gold Lyrics 19 years ago
Am I looking for meanings that aren't there, or is this about coke or smack in some way?

submissions
The Stone Roses – Elephant Stone Lyrics 19 years ago
John Squire said, on an interview in 1988, that this song is about "Love and hate, war and peace, Morecambe and Wise".
I'm not sure it is, though.

submissions
Joy Division – Isolation Lyrics 19 years ago
xtiandeth and Schr4nz, you've made me look at this song in a different way. Possibly referring to growing up as an epileptic? The first verse seems to detail how others (family/mother in particular) react to the presence of the condition - "carefully watched for a reason..." etc.
I dunno. My favourite JD track anyway, before I even knew the words.

submissions
The Bravery – An Honest Mistake Lyrics 19 years ago
I saw these on tv the other night; the lead singer said the song was about an old friend of his (female I think) that he fell out with after he said something stupid that offended her. Apparently she became a rabbi later in life, although whether that's anything to do with him I don't know.

submissions
Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart Lyrics 19 years ago
This is definitely the best pop tune that Joy Division did by a country mile. Also, the line "there's a taste in my mouth as desperation takes hold" is great - wonder if he had that taste before he, you know, hung himself. Haunting.

submissions
The Futureheads – Meantime Lyrics 19 years ago
The Futureheads are great, but part of their greatness is their Sunderland accents. Discuss.

submissions
Ian Brown – Dolphins Were Monkeys Lyrics 19 years ago
In this song Brown undermines his former creationist stance, as displayed in 'I am the Resurrection' and 'Breaking into Heaven', and instead subscibes to the Darwinian theory of evolution. Dolphins and monkeys coming from the same original gene pool, the former showing disdain for dry land.
Or maybe there's no real meaning and it just sounds cool.

submissions
The Stone Roses – Sally Cinnamon Lyrics 19 years ago
I always thought it was that he finds the letter on a jacket that's been left on a train. I think that makes it more poignant, personally.
It's one of the more coherent roses songs (lyrically, I mean) and the fact that he's reading it all and is just an observer is quite a neat twist.
When I was at school in the mid nineties this was the tune for my first love so I always find it moving.

submissions
Super Furry Animals – The Placid Casual Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm surprised no-one's commented on this, it's brilliant. When I got the album about 2 months ago I couldn't stop listening to this track, I enjoy it so much I can't help grinning when it comes on.
And as usual it has the most ridiculous, but poetic, lyrics. How do they do that....?

submissions
The Smiths – Rubber Ring Lyrics 19 years ago
To answer ladyboygrrl's question, the "you are sleeping" line, as well as "Everybody's clever nowadays" are from recordings made by a medium who claimed that they were the voices of dead people. I can't remember where I read that though, so it might be a lie, or I may possibly have dreamed it.
It's a good song and an ex of mine sent me a card quoting the "the passing of time leaves empty lives..." verse. Quite moving, but we didn't get back together.
