Maybe it means exactly what the title says: Cupid's trick. From the story of all his other music, maybe this song is about tricking yourself into bad love that was obviously doom from the beginning but still too hard to resist. Or maybe he's saying that about something else he's addicted to, other than his emotions. |

He's talking about the beginning of a loving relationship. The first few moments of the relationship were magical, but as it continued, the intensity of it revealed his full vulnerability and it's made both of them paranoid and questioning--"and now you know my name / but I don't feel the same / but I ain't gonna blame"
He wants to be trusted in complete faith, but since trust is only something that exists mutually, either her or his own insecure questioning prevents it from occuring--"but I don't feel the same." And even though they've already seen through to each other, the intensity of it has painted them into corners and he "must keep up a show." |

From what I can read into this from my own experience, he loves someone who is still attached to a previous relationship, too insecure to love him back. He's out of control and can't do anything but ask for a free ride. He sees through all the pictures--all the memories--she's so attached to. He wants her to trust him, but she's too far lost in the past for that. |

This song is about a person's inability to confront herself and really look at the scary, introspective things that need to be looked at and resolved. The song is about the frantic dellusion that self-security and happiness and completeness can be produced through changing around physical stances. The song is about the complicated drama produced by that frantic ignorance: the ignorance of not understanding that there is only and always RIGHT HERE AND NOW regardless of the story you tell yourself about how things got to where they are.
The song is about the freightened, desperate race of distracting oneself from his lonliness by running back to familiar grounds and never committing. The song is about running away instead of dealing with what needs to be dealt with. |
