Metric – Handshakes Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm surprised no one really jumped on the meaning here. It's social/professional ladder climbing, sitting on the fence to please everyone and make it ahead, get promoted by acting like a fool by sucking up and being a yes man and not stepping on anyone's toes. And after you've sacrificed your identity and dignity like that, there's no way out.

Paul McCartney – Jenny Wren Lyrics 18 years ago
Stanza 1-Jenny Wren was young and naive and had a song in her heart.
Stanza 2-Then she saw the cruelties of life and in the world and became disillusioned.
Stanza 3-We should make an effort to be more compassionate so more young people won't become saddened by the world.

Say Anything – Alive with the Glory Of Love Lyrics 19 years ago
"holocaust diet"? That's not even funny.
I was agreeing with everyone else's love/sex through the horrors of the holocaust theory until I read the "stalker theory" I like that one. I'm still not sure which is true, but it was interesting, and it makes sense.

The Cardigans – I Need Some Fine Wine And You, You Need To Be Nicer Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah I noticed a lot of Cardigan's songs have to do with alcohol... maybe just a coincidence but it seems a lot of times her narrator's relationships are disturbed by too much drinking... especially this song, which is almost totally about alcoholism

Very cute.. I agree, the excitement of cooking and cleaning your apartment for the boy to come over... and the possibility of "dessert"

The Cardigans – Do You Believe? Lyrics 19 years ago
I love the darkness in this song. It's lovely to think that love will conquer all, but really, sometimes love just isn't enough.

The Stills – Allison Krausse Lyrics 19 years ago
There's many different kinds of virginity ( that line does, in fact, kick ass). You can be a virgin of intercourse, any sexual play, or of other experiences like love, breaking a law, trying a new food, etc. You're a "virgin" to anything you haven't tried. But I think it is a hooker/easy girl and he's being sarcastic about her fake innocence. She may be acting like she's naive when she's really playing him. At least, that's what I got when I read the lyrics. Not necessarily a sexual virgin, just a supposedly innocent girl.

Imogen Heap – Hide and Seek Lyrics 19 years ago
I tend to agree with the lover interpretation of the song... it's certainly morecliche but it's the explaination with the most plausible support. However, taking from the "child being forced to move/mother dies" theory, I agree with the people in the streets line as being the subject's wish for people to sympathize with them, to stop and consider her side and feel sorry for her.
A slightly different thought: He was probably a live-in lover, as would support the crop circle furniture movement and oily marks where happy pictures of them hung. He was maybe cheating on the singer and the other woman with the child is his long-time lover he never told the other woman about. I like the explaination also of the newspaper cutout words being empty, hollow apologies, etc. Great thoughts. I love this song so much, the emptiness fills you.

I have an inkling about this song... that can't quite be put into words. It's odd. I think I love it. Where can we get it??

The Decemberists – Constantinople Lyrics 19 years ago
wow, thanks for the explanation Linus... that's neat that colin would research those legends. To be honest I almost had that story when I first read the lyrics: rich girl is being forced to marry another while her lover drowns(my first thought being suicide out of despair), and once the bride-to-be finds out she kills herself as well. Just goes to show the wondrous storytelling meloy is capable of!

The Decemberists – Summersong Lyrics 19 years ago
While a little disappointed by the HIGHLY anticipated ( by myself, at least) album, I think this one is gold. I love the higher notes mr meloy sings (on "the landlord's daughter" as well) and this song is so whimsical. If not for the dead soldiers bit I would think this was just about a summer love, very sweet. As it is, I have no idea what the song is about!

Tegan and Sara – Fix You Up Lyrics 19 years ago
they took time off from each other to discover themselves and what makes them happy. One lover's not trying as hard as the other one. The more dedicated one is offering up all her love to work things out.... "This love is all I have to give" is probably my absolute favorite T&S lyric... it's so soft and desperate at the end

Buckcherry – Crazy Bitch Lyrics 19 years ago
First, understand this: I love the english language. I love good lyrics and poetry and prose of all kinds. My favorite bands are those with excellent lyrics, even if their music takes time to warm to.

Even so: I love this song. It's funny. The singer's voice is sexy. (very, actually)(in fact, it's what I love most about this song). It's just a nonsense song about a hooker and kinky sex. it's fun. Get over yourselves and get off you high horse, pretending to be offended. Just laugh with the rest of us. jeez.

interesting ideas with the exhibitionist neighbors...haha it's a good story. On first listen I felt that this song was about Narrator (N) and Other Random Person Of Interest (O), who happened to move in across the way... anyway well N is attracted to O who is recovering from heartbreak, and N just wants to heal this person but knows she'll just end up sleeping with the person, which she doesn't truly want for some reason.... possibly fear of just being a rebound partner. Just a theory.

Alanis Morissette – Thank U Lyrics 20 years ago
My take on the kudos line is this: When you give someone kudos, it's like a compliment ("kudos to the chef"), it's some greek thing, so the ever-elusive kudos I guess would be the need to be appreciated, people don't recieve comliments enough.
A great song, Alanis' voice is always so raw and powerful and these lyrics are so touching

The Decemberists – We Both Go Down Together Lyrics 20 years ago
I like where Fantine is going with the LAL tie. If we were going to go on the interpretation in which the characters in WBGDT love each other, then it would be very natural to have suicidal thoughts after your (assuming) first child died. It could, then meet up with the double suicide theory.

And niemannboy, wtf? Unless "boobs" are an integral part of the explination, shut up

Badly Drawn Boy – The Shining Lyrics 20 years ago
Does anybody have any idea what this song means? I considered the unborn baby thing, but I don't see how that makes sense. I thought it was about two people in love, but there are lines that suggest sadness and tragedy. Then I thought of the singer trying to comfort his love, but what about the "Now that we're here, and grieve for me, not history"? that makes it sound like the -singer- is the victim of some depression. Just... some thoughts.

The Decemberists – We Both Go Down Together Lyrics 21 years ago
so, yes, in LAL there is one line that says "a wastrel mesallied," meaning a wasteful person or good-for-nothing married to someone far below their class. and yes, the verse it's in implies that the mother is the wastrel. and, LAL is pretty clear that both the mother and the daughter die during childbirth. Just a thought that perhaps makes no difference in anything: Could the phrase "birthed me down a dry revine" mean that the mother was dead when she gave birth, and the dry revine is her dead birth canal? Probably makes no difference anyhow.
i am inclined to believe that because there are so many accounts of people having heard or heard about Mr. Meloy intending WBGDT to be a prequel to LAL, that yes it really is.
Also, I don't believe that anyone dies in WBGDT. "We both go down together" could possibly (and I think it does) mean that they both lose their standing in society because of this Romeo-and-Juliet type union. They become outcasts of sorts because perhaps neither social class can accept their children's partner? This is all made up as I go along, btw. I'm not sure of any of this. So, maybe we are all wrong about LAL in that it was the father who was the upperclassman and their child is Leslie Ann Levine.
or, and this just came to me, maybe "We both go down together" means that they could only be together that once is secret, made a lovechild of Leslie Ann Levine, and they are both going down together metaphorically, like they are both heartbroken by their seperation. And, maybe that connects to LAL because the stress of birthing the child of her one true love that she can never see again killed the mother? Just some things to consider. And also, enough fighting! This is an open forum, don't turn it into a bulletin for slandering. These are our opinions, nd everyone's will differ. jeez louis.

The Decemberists – Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect Lyrics 21 years ago
well, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the song might be about failure. The first verse talks about how before the war, he thought he would be a soldier, a sort of glorious thing, and then he saw the reality and the brutality and thinks how could he ever have thought he would be a proud soldier.
The chorus is maybe about him living life, trying out these options, and discovering he made a very painful but ultimately beneficial choice.
he thought he was making good decisions to help protect his loved one and himself but for some reason he failed and could never make anything right.
"and and i am nothing of a builder
but here i dreamt i was an architect
and i built this balustrade
to keep you home, to keep you safe
from the outside world
but the angles and the corners
even though my work is unparalelled
they never seemed to meet
this structure fell about our feet
and we were free to go"
even though my work is unparalelled: trying to comfort himself and make excuses? The last verse I'm not as sure about but but I'm pretty confident that the puppets and courtesans part is another instance where he tries to regain his pride by making himself out to be this puppetier (in total control of his and others' lives) or grand socialite. He pretends the be this great lover (and risk taker, ect.)because he broke his own heart and his lover's inthe past, and he's just trying to bury the pain.
So that's my take. This song is very specific to a situation I'm involved in right now so the meaning is very special to me. If i'm in any way correct.

The Decemberists – Red Right Ankle Lyrics 21 years ago
I think it's a love song because it takes so much care to describe this person. everything is so soft and delicate, and it clearly expresses (to me, anyway) how perfect the singer thinks the person is. also, I think the story of how the ankle met the leg is metaphorical to the singer's relationship to the subject. Don't quite understand the red right ankle though.

it does seem to make more sense that the song has to do with a sudden, deep love, but i prefer to think that it it is, like londonium said, about domestic violence because that was my initial thought when I first heard the song
