first i have to say that blue is a very beautiful and melodic songs and most assuredly on of my favourites on thirteenth step. the main premice of the song is that maynard once had a girlfriend, or partner, or probably some sort of sex slave... who was addicted to drugs, or to some sort of destructive behavior. and he just didnt want to know about it. he refused to see that she was slowly dying. "call an optomist" is one of the lyrics in the song (which many of you argue to be "call it aftermath") which means hes being optomistic, he only see the bright side of things, not the fact shes dying. then "blue" which is the reoccuring theme is about the persons' skin turning blue as they die. and maynard thinks it matches so well with the persons eyes, hence " call an optomist shes turnin blue what a lovely color for your eyes" and if you watch the video it is of a woman digging up a loved one who has already passed and shes still having dinner with him. so shes refusing to see that hes already gone. this song is sung in the veiwpoint of someone who is in great denial. and the line "took their nods for an approval" is really about asking the person if theyre okay and as long as they say they're fine everything can get back to normal. it makes it easier to ignore it. and really its about a person who just "didnt want to know". its really about kind of a shade of self-induced ignorance, and self-proclaimed denial. but finally you hve to realize... "wow, that persons a junkie..." |
