| The Sleepy Jackson – Fill Me With Apples Lyrics | 19 years ago |

This song/poem is in my mind one of The Sleepy Jackson's greatest achievements. I once read an album review of the lovers album and the reviewer dismissed this track as a piano doodle, which couldn't be further from the truth. I think this song may be about death and rebirth in love and in life. The following lyrics: "your love is as strong as death" "our minds are dead they have passed their time" "I feel like cement" all contribute to a meaning of death. While the lyrics: "fill me with apples" "we don't grow round here" "fill their faces with farms" "make them become a pregnant man and woman" are all metaphors for birth and growth. There's also quite a heavy feeling to the poem, when Steele says the words, cement, weighty tears and loud cries you get the feeling that he is at an emotional end. I also really love the way he recites the poem in a sort of semi psuedo-american accent. |
