| The Shins – The Past And Pending Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think my opinion here will be very narrow minded, because my friend kept telling me to download this CD, and I didn't end up doing it untill she died... I really do think it's about the loss of a friend. As someone sets light to the first fire of autumn We settle down to cut ourselves apart. Cough and twitch from the news on your face And some foreign candle burning in your eyes "We settle down to cut ourselves apart", "what could we have done" "where'd we go wrong" "Cough and twitch from the news", just like breaking down and crying. "Some foreign candle burning in your eyes", your gone, it's not you anymore. Held to the past too aware of the pending Chill as the dawn breaks and finds us up for sale. Enter the fog another low road descending Away from the cold lust, you house and summertime. This verse is thinking about the past, but knowing whats just happened (the pending) a new road has to be taken, we're ripped from our path and it doesnt go back to her house anymore, and the summer memories we built up. The chorus seems to central around one pivotal event "the cursed affair". My friend crashed so it's all i really think about there, could be many things. The next verse is about the notes you left her and the notes she left you. And everything we've tried to do, can't console us from losing you. That's my idea, or maybe just what I like best, hope it helps. |

Some men are in prison although they walk the streets at night Other men who got the lockdown are free as a bird in flight How about the hour in the system that ended In a one-way line, our measures could not stand it i got that from here http://www.singulartists.com/artist_r/rancid_lyrics/daly_city_train_lyrics.html it sounds pretty right. |

ryanz has a good itnepretation, but TIm Armstong usually writes abotu real people to convey his point, (like the Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards album). So im guessing Jackyl was actually some guy he knew, and yeah, its kind of like Kurt Cobain even if it isnt about him. Some men are prisoners though that walk the streets at night Other men who got the lockdown are free as a bird in flight the ending of that verse is, like "he had a one way line a man just could not stand it"... as far as i can figure. |

I posted this for catch 22's keasbey ngiths, but i figgered id post it here: living the best you can is what its about. Feeling so strong, something went wrong. Straight into my finger, what a stinger, it was so long. "I still remember that day, like the day that I said that I swear, "I'll never hurt myself again", but it seems that I'm deemed to be wrong, to be wrong, to be wrong. So i've got to keep holding on... " he promised himself he wouldnt hurt himself again, hurting himself could mean, being in a bad relationship and not getting out because your afaird to make the jump, not going away to college cause your scared of leaving your hometown. by the end of that verse he finds out that mistakes will happen, but hes gotta keep holding on, keep trying. the chorus is about not letting those challenges getting the best of you, hes facing them head on, like a gun fight. the second verse is about the same as the first. the first few liens are about him being a youth, just having fun. "dont stop cause you might get dropped" means dont stop holding on, "whose gonna pick you up cause i wont" means be self dependent, love yourself and make life the best you can. hope that clears it up. |

| basically, and im pointing otu the semi-obvious, he's comparing the horse track to life growing up. he says "ill pick the horse with the biggest heart", what he means is that in this horse race that life is, its not who wins it, its who races, like big l. | |

i think that the first part of thsi song is rpetty obvious. jesus is jimmy. afetr the breakup with whatesername that was showed in wake me up when septemeber ends st.jimmy cant take it. so "jimmy died today, he blew his brains out into the bay, in this state of mind its my own private suicide" obviously shows the death of st.jimmy. east 12th street is porbably about a drug rehab center. thats why ehs day dreaming(withdrawal) his paperwork si checking himself in. he wants to do ciarettes and coffe with the underbelly becuase hes in rehab, no duh he'd wanna get out and go back to his saint jimmy life. then in nobody lieks you. i think this song is sung from people in his town, possibly Tunny from R&R girlfreind.. The voice sounds mroe like tre then billie. and mike sins the abckup. there saying "whered you go" to jesus, because he elft. "everyoen elft you, nobody lieks you, there all otuw ithotu you ahving fun" is about hwo they got along with out him. there having fun maybe because there american idiots. R&R girlfreind is a postcard from Tunny who obviously was an american idiot from Suburbia who is writing to jesus to tell him how it is at home. we're coming home again is about jesus journey home. he comes home and theres another mention of his heart beat, which is now only a murmur, a murmur can eb diseased ssound from the ehart, maybe thsi disease made his heart where hsi home is like it didnt used to be. the disease mite be mentioning hsi ehart being broken by whatsername who held it liek a hand grenade. i think the "we're" is him and Tunny since u here Tunny againa t the end of the song |
