This song is absolutely mezmorizing. The version on Remember Two Things does it no justice. It's so much better live. I think I actually like the version on the Gorge CD better than Red Rocks. I like the jam at the end that Carter rocks out on...he's so freakin' sweet!! They are all so freakin' sweet! Plus, with the Gorge DVD, you get to watch them all close up with cool camera shots. But nothing beats DMB live!! |

If you listen very closely to the studio version, at the very beginning where the music busts in, you can here Dave say, "Silence is poetry." I don't really know how to interepret this, but I know he throws that in there. |

I left something out...I'm not sure if the song was, in fact written about Valdez though. He could have just dedicated it to him. And it very well could be about his sister Anne. |

If you look in the Under the Table and Dreaming lyric book inside the CD case, it says "For Miguel Valdez," Dave's friend whom passed away before the album was released. And the song originally had lyrics then was made into an instramental. But I think that the music speaks these lyrics by itself...such an awsome song! |

| Dave Matthews Band – Grace Is Gone Lyrics

If you look in their CD booklets about who wrote the song, all the band members names are listed. So it is quite possible that someone else had ideas or feelings for lyrics. And they all write the music together as well. But I have also heard the step-dad theory and that's what I believe. But people may want to take it in different contexts. I personally listened to this song a lot when I was depressed about my girlfriend of 4 years leaving me. My grace and happiness was gone, I felt like doing nothing but drinking and smoking and listening to this song...and holloween. Sometimes I still that I could never love again, so much as I loved her. And I also felt that I didn't need my eyes or heart either, because I felt as if why have them if she doesn't love me?
Anyways, I just recently found this site and I love how you can express yourself and it seems that almost everyone can relate. It's a nice vent as well. Thanks for listening.
Oh, about the whole "grace" thing...Dave has twins named Stella and Grace. Dave's sister who was murdered was named Anne. And the woman Dave asked to marry like 3 was named (something) Grey...jennifer maybe? But I say take this song in whatever context it relates to you, personally. That makes it all more the better....LOVE IT!! |

| Dave Matthews Band – Say Goodbye (Album version) Lyrics

DMB originally wanted to name this song "One Lay and Goodbye" but they figured to go with something not so blunt. I think of this song as an orgasm in some sense...it may be weird, but listen to the way the song cresendos (sounds like creshendo, not sure how to spell it) at the end and gets quiet again. It's like it builds, climaxes, then roles over and has a cigarrette...amazing! All the drummers in here have to get "Under the Table and Drumming" by Carter. He shows you this song (and many others) and you can really learn a lot from the entire video. If you really want a trip, hotbox a car and get as stoned as possible. When you are way chilled out turn this song on and turn the music up decently loud...it just sweeps you away and you'll never forget how you felt. You can also do this with Proudest Monkey, 41, Pig, Crush, and Loving Wings...It's sooo the best feeling ever!! DMB is the best ever!! |

I heard on VH1's Driven that Dave wrote this song about his then girlfriend whom he later married. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think I remember them saying that he wrote it about her and just how he missed her when he was on the road, recording, etc. They said it was just a very passionate love song that he wrote for the woman he loved. But I can also see where everyone else gets their interpretations. Let me know what you all think. Peace! |

The first time I heard this song was at the Vote for Change show at the Palace of Auburn Hills...it literally took my breath away! It's so crazy how DMB can get such a thick and heavy sound out of those instruments...but then again they are all freakin' geniuses! They jam soooo hard in this song! I LOVE IT!! |
