The Ponys – Small Talk Lyrics 17 years ago
I like the legal imagery.

He has someone figured out, but he is keeping it to himself?

The Radio Dept. – Where Damage Isn't Already Done Lyrics 18 years ago
Very poetic. Really captures a mood of optimistic cynicism.

The Von Bondies – Broken Man Lyrics 18 years ago
One of my favorite Detroit-themed songs. It really captures the city's essence. In a good way.

Hundred Reasons – Dissolve Lyrics 19 years ago
my favorite song by them. it has a vaguely poetic quality, as most of their lyrics tend to.

i envision someone going through something and having to sacrifice for it, and that sacrifice going unappreciated... some of the lines clearly refer to someone learning from their own mistakes. or something to that effect. but that doesn't mean that that is remotely what this song is even about.

about optimism when facing massive challenges? hubris?

Miracle of 86 – A Less Important Place Lyrics 19 years ago
I always forget how awesome Miracle is, and then this song comes on and it's like I'm discovering a new favorite band all over again.

(Too bad that aren't making pretty noises together anymore....)

The Notwist – Day 7 Lyrics 19 years ago
I have seven letters in my name...

It's about anticipating seeing someone. Someone with seven letters in their name.

Say Hi – Pop Music of the Future Lyrics 19 years ago
Does anyone know what 909 beats is/are?

ear24, She doesn't necessarily discard indie bands when they make it big for the reason that they've attained "pop" status. I don't think that can be inferred from the song. In fact, with the hair bands and corduroy reference and like, she is in tune with fads. The point is that she has defined her times. She, in a way, is pop--but in a platonic rather than aristotelian way.

I would also like to add that "'cause it's all been downhill since sunny day real estate's first record" is possibly the truest statement ever made.

Arcade Fire – Cars and Telephones Lyrics 19 years ago
Yes, this song is about a long-distance relationship, but it does speak to something more complicated.

I think it also conveys--not just the torment of distance in a relationship--but the pain of how peoples lives go different ways over time, and more often than not those different ways are apart. How you can share so much with a person but life carries you in different directions, and can leave a different taste in different mouths. (To me, that's what the autobiography line addresses.) I think the song is ultimately about the futility one can feel in the face of that.

To me, that is the complexity that makes this song so haunting.

Sorry About Dresden – Deadship, Darkship Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't know what this song means. I have never been too concerned about that though. I just love the lyrics, whatever they mean. I kind of like their ambiguity. I saw them a few years ago at The Talking Head in Baltimore and met the drummer playing pool before the show. I asked them to play this and they were a bit surprised at the request. I guess it's not generally part of their sets. But anyways, I got it dedicated to me ("This is for that girl behind the fat girl!").... Awesome concert, awesome band, awesome song.

Arcade Fire – Cars and Telephones Lyrics 21 years ago
I have never heard any song so perfectly capture the torment of a long-distance love.

This song brings back the emotion of a very specific time in my life, a long time ago. The emptiness of just talking, the need to be near that person, the desparation and dream of overcoming the distance, and the reality that daylight brings... and "memory that needs to be repressed". Just a straightforward and poetic and amazing song.
