Sia – Butterflies Lyrics 19 years ago
This is quite obvious, I think. It's about an established relationship--these people have been together for a while, but the attraction hasn't faded--the butterflies are still there.

That or it's about drugs. It seems like everything else is about drugs. >_>

Kissinger – Kat Lyrics 20 years ago
I did a search for songs with my name in the title, and look what I found. Heh. That said, I'm not going to say "omg lyke i sooo totaly cant beleive no1's commented on dis," because...Whatever.

The song's pretty straightforward. Singer's "in love" with Kat, who wants his friend, who wants the singer's girlfriend.

Unless Kat and Kate somehow symbolize drugs or something, because then I'm out.

*grin*

Incubus – Stellar Lyrics 20 years ago
I've never really given this too much thought: I didn't even realize how simple the lyrics are until I came here tonight.

To me, the meaning is in the voice, not necessarily the lyrics. That could just be the lazy way out, but it's true. He manages to convey so much feeling (whether that feeling is love or just sexual attraction) in such simple words, and to me, that's amazing.

Jack's Mannequin – MFEO: Part 1: Made for Each Other/Part 2: You Can Breathe Lyrics 20 years ago
I actually see...something like that. I can't figure out exactly what it is that I think this is about. My opinion seems to change with every other line in the song. Right now, I guess it seems like it's about a relationship gone wrong: the girl's boyfriend (not the singer) maybe...got her pregnant and ran out? I know that the line 'running out on you' talks about the air, but the repetition makes it seem like more. But she doesn't know what to do...so she goes to the singer: a friend. Maybe the last few lines in that stanza talks about them addressing some feelings that had been there for a while. But she's leaving, she knows. She has to leave, so she doesn't have to deal with what the bad guy put her through?

Eh.

I'm probably wrong, so no one flame me too badly when you find the real explanation, ne?

Jack's Mannequin – Last Straw Lyrics 20 years ago
Actually, sweetflourescent, I'm going to back slowdance up with the whole JFK thing. The lyric is "run around like JFK", not "through" or "from" or whatever. And the next line says "we watched that poor girl waste the best years of her life." I don't see how you don't see that. That said, I definitely agree with you about the lines about the president and how a "woman needs a man."

Coldplay – Yellow Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't know for sure (I've never done it), but isn't crank a sort of yellowish color? Hence the..."drew a line for you." I think that perhaps they're getting high together. The stars seem to shine for her, because...well...they're high. She's a junkie, so she's 'skin and bones', but to him, she's beautiful,..because...well...he's high!

(Yeah, with my luck, of course, this has already been brought up, argued about, and finally agreed upon. I'd look through all the pages to make sure, but my internet's going wonky, and I'm just off to bed, so I'll risk it. :-/ )

Psapp – Cosy in the Rocket Lyrics 20 years ago
There are some lines in this song "come, come, fly into my palm," which, in my opinion are probably about..urm...a sexual encounter, I suppose. But other than that, I know only that I love the way that this is sung, and the music-box-ish tune in the background.

The Verve Pipe – The Freshmen Lyrics 20 years ago
Wow. Weddings and babies and such...I think I must be watching too much Law and Order: SVU, because my opinion of the song is way different. For some reason, I see two younger boys (fresh men, right?) who murdered a girl. I think maybe he loved her, but she "took a punk"-chose someone else over him. Maybe he thought she'd been leading him on: 'she was touching her face'-maybe he thought that meant she wanted him. "She fell in love in the first place." He figured she really did love him, but didn't know it or some other such reasoning that criminals use. So he and a friend, whether it was planned or spur-of-the-moment, came across her and murdered her. They thought that they'd get away with it-that they wouldn't plea out or get put into jail, what have you.

But maybe they came across the crime scene several days later, when the police have roped it off, and realize how young she was-that they'd stopped a baby's breath. (Or perhaps that refers to a shrine or whatever, that the girl's family put up once everything is over.) Shoe full of rice...I'm not going to go there, since...it's kinda gross....

Weeks...maybe months or years go by, and the guilt is still strong. They don't talk about it, though--perhaps hoping that, if they don't mention it, it wasn't real.

But the inevitable happens: they're found out. His friend runs--probably to Mexico or something. The friend...had a girlfriend, who, once she finds out what he did, kills herself. Now he's in jail...waiting...and thinking about it. He doesn't know what made them think they'd get away with it, that they wouldn't have to pay.

I know, I know. I seem really disturbed, based on the way I percievd this song, but I promse you...I'm very well-adjusted. I'm not crazy...*nervous chuckle*

Dispatch – Out Loud Lyrics 20 years ago
I have to agree with the theories that it's about an ex-relationship, but only because that's the guy I think about whenever I hear this song.

Avoiding speaking his name, averting the eyes, basically pretending he didn't exist...that was what we did, I think. But then, after a while, I went back because he essentially spoke my name. Yargh.

I'd just like to say that I see the "greasy marionettes" as prostitutes. They're the puppets of their pimps, and of course they can't exactly be particularly clean.

Cake – Let Me Go Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't really see this as a love song to someone in a wheelchair, though that's entirely possible, I suppose. I see this as a song about a girl he likes-obviously. She's not...sexualized, I guess is the word. She doesn't try to attract men by using her body-her hips or her lips. Of course, all this only serves to attract him a lot more than the other women, and that makes him clingy. She's independent, though-does *not* put up with anyone hanging onto her like that.

Gotta love this song.

Cake – Love You Madly Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with Hershey and Shoe. He says that he doesn't want to wonder, that he *wants* to love her madly, because he does wonder, that he doesn't love her. The line abou the dishes rattling in the cupboards when the elephants arrive-they argue. Apparently, she brings up his past transgressions-like an elephant, she remembers everything. The line about the pretty ornaments pulling down the branches of the tree could be about how little details about her-her little idiosyncrasies-were cute before, but now they irritate him. That's not new for anything, is it?

And, as Hershey said, Cake just kicks ass.

Geez. Though, taking into consideration that most of SoCo's songs are about drugs, I believe that ShakeDown is closer to the truth than I am, and I feel retarded for having spent so long on my little analysis...*hides*

Something Corporate – When It Goes Down Lyrics 20 years ago
I take it to be from Boy A to Girl. Girl was in love with Boy B, who led her on and on, with no intention of fulfilling his promises. Hence the "reached so hard it made you fall For these hands that let you go." Boy B left Girl for Girl B (sorry for the complexities, guys), but presumably continued to lead Girl A on. Boy B's and Girl B's relationship...it must be rocky at best-very on-again-off-again--and through this all, he's been telling Girl A that he loves her, "holding on to things he can't keep". Finally, she's gotten fed up with it. She knows that, whether or not he loves her, he'll never forget about Girl B. She knows that he might "come down"-break up again, but he'll never "land"-forget about her. She's tired of the shit, and doesn't want to be there when the relationship 'goes down again.'

Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything... *innocence*

Blegh. Sorry. I'm a spaz.

Also, to add to my schizo interpretation of the song, my mother's parents were from the south (not Virginia, though...), and she was born in December. But I've never been to LA. Pity.

Like just about everyone else who's posted, I find myself almost nearing tears whenever I hear this song (and I don't cry: that's as close as I get). You want to know something creepy? Whenever I hear it, depending on maybe the verse or even the time of day, I flip-flop between being convinced that this song is about my parents, who are...it's not so easy right now, and my boyfriend-turned-ex-turned-great-friend. Kinda creeps me out.

Love the song, though. Right now, it's a tie between this, Cavanaugh Park, and Ruthless for number one. Oh damn. And Konstantine. And Babies of the Eighties...and...crap.

I love these guys. How's that/

Ryan Adams – Damn, Sam (I Love a Woman That Rains) Lyrics 20 years ago
I first heard this song from a sort of project/challenge I posed at a forums. Right now I don\'t particularly like the name \"Sam\" because it makes me think of a particular girl that I absolutely despise. This girl rains on her boyfriend (one of my best friends) just about all the time, when there\'s not a drought, and it pisses me off. But he takes it from her, so I can\'t say anything.

Nickelback – Just For Lyrics 21 years ago
It may be the context in which I first heard (read?) this song (a stroy wherein one of the characters uses it to express his feelings for her), but I've thought of this song in that way ever since. It's from a guy to a girl he likes, and he's frustrated because the guy she's with is a jerk-not right for her, the way *he* is.

But it could definitely also be about an abusive father, and a child not being able to do anything.
