This feels a little like a song about being in a relationship which you can't leave, because you couldn't live with yourself for hurting the other person, although that may be an over simplified interpretation. |

| The National – I Should Live in Salt Lyrics

Can't quite decide what I make of this song. The "living in salt" reference confuses me a little. Salt preserves things, so living in salt could be interpreted as a life frozen in the moment.
Regardless, a lovely song. |

Oh my - what a song. When I listen to it, I feel like it a song about a girl leaving a boy. The girl left him because he held her on too much of a pedestal, "You always said I held you way too high off the ground". The boy is heartbroken, "I was a television version of a person with a broken heart". She'd told him when she left that it was for the best, and the pain would be short and sharp and "painless". And then she came back, and he is conflicted. He was moving on.
My early contender for best song on the album. |

I listen to this song and it comes across quite simply as a critique of lower class inner city neighbourhoods.
But it is an absolutely beautiful song. |

LizardKing, whilst I don't dispute your political facts and statements it is striking how if I was indeed a civilian living in certain areas of Iraq and I heard this song, I could well imagine seeing 'He' as George W Bush or his dear friend Tony.
And I'm not some neo-socialist leftie; I'm in the British Army. |

To me... this song is about the effect that distance often has on what otherwise appears a wonderful relationship. |

I love this song. I am just back from a few days at the Edinburgh Fringe where I met an amazing girl. We had a very intense and amazing couple of days, but now I'm back in England, she is about to go to university, and it all feels like our perfect moment is destined to remain just that - a moment.
To me, this song is about that. Taking part in the 'fling' was easy. It was natural. Letting go however is easier said than done. Letting go is indeed the hardest part. |

| Stephen Fretwell – Emily Lyrics

To me, Emily is a girl that the song writer used to love. This girl then messed him about, eg the lyrics "I'm tired of your lies and your cheating ways with me". I think that Emily cheated with someone better looking, but someone who was not as nice. Then later, when Emily realises she let w truely nice guy get away she regrets it. But the guy is no longer interested. |

| James Blunt – Wisemen Lyrics

To me, the "3 Wise Men" are people from earlier in James' life and the word wise is used ironically. I imagine these 3 Men were friends and used to give James a hard time maybe at school, maybe at Sandhurst, who knows. And James is basically saying well look at me now... oh and by the way "where are you now". |

| James Blunt – Cry Lyrics

Knowing James Blunt used to be a army officer, I can see that influence in nearly all his songs. "I have seen death. Lived to see a lover's final breath. Do you see my guilt? Should I feel fright?" To me, those lyrics refer to James questioning his life in the army.
In my opinion, the person the song is being sung too is either a friend/lover left behind as he deploys abroad. And this lover/friend is questioning why he is going, and what he will be fighting for. |

To me, 'he' is George Bush and Blair. I know the song was written about Kosovo... but if you imagine the song was written in the context of the recent Iraq conflict then 'he' strikes me as a term for the leaders so often responsible for unnecessary violence. |

| James Blunt – You're Beautiful Lyrics

You know you can see someone in a 'crowded place' and in purely physical terms, you have bever seen anyone to match? And you can then imagine that their personality is perfect, and imagine having the most wonderful relationship with them. In your dream world things are perfect. However, the reality is often so different. That is what this song means to me. |

I agree with you clairebaby, that lyric in particular is beautiful. What I can't understand about the song is the reason for this love 'turning blue', given that he spends the entire song talking up the love? |

It seems apparent to me that this is a song written about either a close friend or family member, but more likely a lover who has passed away. The references to death are clear to see - not least from the song title.
What I find puzzling is the lyric "I'm just trying to be all that I can be, without destroying you or joining the army". If joining the army would allow him to be 'all he can be' then why is he ruling it out?
A beautiful song none the less, one of my favourites. |
