Arctic Monkeys – Brianstorm Lyrics 18 years ago
Just seen them at Glastonbury - this song is absolutely awesome live - like being machine gunned into submission.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – Julia's Song Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree entirely - great song. Interestingly not written by Andy or Paul but by a woman called Julia Kneale, who was a member of The Id and who I believe was Andy's girlfriend at the time. Hence 'Julia's Song'.

Pet Shop Boys – Dreaming Of The Queen Lyrics 20 years ago
The song is about AIDS and its effect on the gay community (before retroviral drugs arrived), hence 'there were no more lovers left alive'. Waking up in a sweat was a symptom of AIDS.

Obviously love never lasted in the Queen's family for other reasons. The song was on 'Very', released in 1994 (three years before Diana died in Paris) - obviously you won't hear it on the radio now which is a great shame because it is an excellent song.

The Stone Roses – Driving South Lyrics 20 years ago
With all their biblical imagery (I Wanna Be Adored, I Am The Resurrection, Love Spreads), they had to write a song about the devil, didn't they? Kind of covers the same soul-stealing territory as The Devil Went Down To Georgia and Tribute. A great example of what a fantastic rhythm section Mani and Reni were.

Tori Amos – Happy Phantom Lyrics 21 years ago
I think Confucious fits in with the characters she sees because she is dead, and they are all dead too. So she can see Confucious, Judy Garland etc. I always thought the 'seven little men' were the seven dwarves (as in Snow White) although why they'd be there (as cartoon characters) I don't know. Anyway, I think this is one of Tori's gems, mostly because the whole thing just sounds like a slightly silly take on being dead until she throws in the killer lines:

'Will you still call for me when she falls asleep
Or do we soon forget the things we cannot see'

Not that I have experience of this (luckily), but people do sometimes quickly fall in love again after a lover has gone.

The Cure – Catch Lyrics 21 years ago
Sorry, explodinggirl, the lyrics are right - 'And I sometimes even tried to catch her - but never even caught her name' - which the whole point of calling the song 'Catch' don't you think?
