Death Cab for Cutie – Cath... Lyrics 17 years ago
Sadly enough - I've been the well intentioned man in this song and married a woman who was going through the motions because she felt that was what she was supposed to do... ended after 1 month of marriage when she finally realized that she couldn't understand why she got married... a very painful truth to admit.

"A heart that is dying fast..." to me either means that you are losing heart - losing hope - or even just going numb... afraid that you won't have any heart left to give...

At least in my case this song rings deeply true and I'm thankful that there are empathetic songrwiters like Gibbard who are willing to tell these stories and make you think twice before saying "I do"

The Pale Pacific – Sucker Punch Lyrics 19 years ago
I've always thought the bridge ends with "I would, I'd try, I'd give it a shot" - almost as if to say that "I would have at least tried to stay in contact"

For some reason this makes me think of a bad relationship with dad that seems to fade away after the son is out of school and moved on with his life.

The tattoos are just a rough exterior to an issue that melts the inner self.

This song is a strong statement of remorse that someone hasn't kept up with the songwriter.

Peter Gabriel – Digging In The Dirt Lyrics 19 years ago
Anyone who has had a commuting moment when you are driving in your car and find yourself digging up painful memories can relate to this song in a unique way.

It conjurs up images of driving alone in a car while you dredge up painful retrospective memories. Even listening to this song while driving along in the car can bring up my own personal torments from the past.

"Stay with me I need support" has always felt so personal as if the songwriter is baring his pain over his divorce and wrote that line to connect directly to me so that I would understand where he's coming from. This isn't the same songwriter who a little earlier was singing about the Big Time.

This song was at a very painful time for Gabriel and it showed in his music and specifically in this song. I consider it a pivot point between So and Up

Peter Gabriel – Sky Blue Lyrics 19 years ago
On the Growing Up concert tour DVD, Peter Gabriel mentions that some songs develop quickly, but that was not the case for this song. He gives the impression that he had been working on this song for a long time. He mentions that it wasn't until the addition of the choral voices at the end that it sent a chill down his spine and he realized he had it. Watching the performance on the DVD is equally chilling... it is haunting and conjurs up pictures of a chain gang sitting on death row dreaming of release.

Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics 20 years ago
Anyone who has ever stood at a bedside and watched as someone passed away will relate to this song. We will all spend time in a hospital... and we will all go through this in our lives.

This is a great song to share with someone who has just lost a loved one because it grieves with them.

I coworker of mine just lost her sister to a freak accident at age 35 and she was so torn up because she didn't get that last chance to set everything right.. that last chance to say "I love you"...

But what I really think this song is saying is that just being there... the ones who go to the hospitall... it is a way of saying I love you... when you can't.

You feel very helpless in a hospital... there's no comfort there...

But it is your way of saying "I love you" to the person... it is all you have left.

Counting Crows – Recovering The Satellites Lyrics 20 years ago
All the comments thus far seem very valid for this song, but I'd like to ascribe a variation as this song mirrors a story anyone who grew up in a small town can relate to.

Small towns bread two types of ambition... those who can't wait to get the hell out of dodge and do something "better" and those with less lofty ambitions that simply want to make things "better" right where they are at.

This song just sings a story of a man who grew up in a small town and had his eye on a girl ... a girl with troubles at home... a girl that couldn't wait to get out of there... to leave and find a new life out there...

And likewise.. this boy had dreams too.. just not quite so lofty... while she reached for the stars... he just reached for the ceiling.

But just like all small towns... they have a horrible way of recalling you back when things get rough. You find things difficult out there in the world and you retreat to the safety of your small town... and usually your family in that town.

Families... and mothers especially... have a habit of pulling you back... of bringing you back home. I can't tell you how many times my mom would call me and tell me to come live back home. I was out in orbit... and she wanted to bring me back down to where they were... where the family was.

When you think about it ... think of how much gossip happens in small towns.. how many times there is a resentment of those who "make it out" of there...

There is this awful gossip that just says... "they'll be back."

I think this song just nails that story. It touches me deeply ... as I've gone through those recalls... i've ended back in that small town... hating every minute... feeling like I needed to get back to basics and figure out what they hell to do next with my life.

To walk downtown and see your friends from high school in the same situation... just makes this song real to me.

Coldplay – Til Kingdom Come Lyrics 20 years ago
Knowing that this song was originally written for Johnny Cash, you can't help but wonder if this isn't a beautifully written gospel song about Mr. Cash's life-long struggle with his faith. Till Kingdom Come is a strong reference to Heaven... and every time I listen to this song I'm reminded of the following scripture in the bible: (2 Peter 3: 8-10 - NLT)

"But you must not forget, dear friends, that a day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise to return, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to perish, so he is giving more time for everyone to repent. But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and everything in them will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be exposed to judgment."

To me... regardless of Chris's intention... I only hear Johnny Cash singing of his life... singing about how he has (like us all) wanted someone who would understand him.... someone who can set us free.. both from this world.. and from our bondage. To me this is like saying... Lord... I know I'm not there yet... and I don't know if I'm ready... but I hope that I'm one of those who you are waiting to save... Please... even though I'm not sure which way I'm headed... I ask that you wait for me...

:(

And that is why this song has that special meaning to me... because I've felt that same way many times...

I can picture Johnny Cash singing this song as an old man.. asking his God to wait for him... to save him... and set him free...

Beautiful...

Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees Lyrics 21 years ago
This song to me represented Thom's growing dark vision of the commercial Utopia that eventually became OK Computer. I've always felt this was Thom's cry against a world that he viewed as demanding false outward representations of ourselves, yet inwardly we are all tired and lonely and just wanting to be accepted.

If you take this song in context of OK Computer, then you can relate the song to a world filled with rubber plans to get rid of itself - or in other words a world where we replace the real with fake replicas. An orwellian world that is Fitter Happier... more productive... filled with tansports, motor ways and tramlines... a world where ambition makes you look pretty ugly ... with kicking sqealing gucci little piggies.

That world really did wear Thom out... he felt like a sardine in a limousine can and one of the reasons why Kid A stands as his breaking point.

The reason why he cried the first time he heard the album all the way through - sitting in the backseat of a car.

"I will see you, in the next life..."

Pearl Jam – Nothingman Lyrics 21 years ago
I cannot begin to express how much this song represented how I felt when I was in the midst of divorce. Rarely a night passed when I wouldn't sit alone in the dark of my room with my guitar and sing and play along as if I was in some way a co-author of this hurting vision. Regardless of what Eddie's heart was feeling at the time, the lyrics he wrote were so applicable to my emptiness and my regret that nearly 10 years later I can't even write this comment without feeling the tears and lump in my throat. It was something, nothingman.
