The Beatles – Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) Lyrics 17 years ago
I have the CD version of the 1962-1966 Red Album that includes this song. I listened very carefully several times, and it really sounds like the opening line is:

"I once HURT a girl"

The second line hounds a little more like "once HAD me," but the first line definately sounds like HURT. It's spoken in a British accent, but there is definately a T on the end instead of a D. Can anyone else hear that on the same or different versions of the song?

Styx – Heavy Metal Poisoning Lyrics 17 years ago
The backward phrases at the beginning are Latin. They're "annuit coeptis; novus ordo seclorum." The first one means "Approved to begin" and the other one means "New Order of the Ages." They are the mottos on the back of an American $1 bill. It's not a Christian phrase, it's Masonic.

The song must be understood in the context of the Kilroy was Here concept. In the KWH production, JY was playing Dr. Righteous, a powerful religious leader who had all rock music made illegal, and he's the bad guy of the story. Heavy Metal Poisoning is his anthem, his justification for why he banned rock music.

Styx – Earl Of Roseland Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a song about the birthplace of Styx. Dennis grew up in the Roseland neighborhood of Chicago (and he is the self-proclaimed Earl). Charlie and Johnny are the Panozzo brothers, and the other two boys in the last verse may be JY and John Curulewski, whom Dennis would not meet until college.

Styx – Castle Walls Lyrics 17 years ago
In a Dennis concert I attended, Dennis said that Tommy was dating Linda Blair at the time Castle Walls was written, and as a gag, he used the music from The Exorcist as an inspiration for the synth part of the song.

Styx – Father O.S.A. Lyrics 17 years ago
IMO, this song is about the Catholic Order of Saint Augustine, or maybe about Roman Catholicism itself. That would be ironic because they recorded the organ part of the song in a Catholic church.

Styx – 22 Years Lyrics 17 years ago
Actually, this is a Styx band song. It's from "The Serpent is Rising," one of their early Wooden Nickel albums. If you like Styx, especially their earlier stuff, you should listen to their Wooden Nickel recordings, because there are a few songs that should be rediscovered.

Styx – Snowblind Lyrics 19 years ago
I concur with OS Was Here. Any song that has the words "mirror," "lines" and "snow" can only be about one thing. Still, it's JY's best vocal, and the bum-bum-bum at the end is eerie and awesome.

Blink-182 – Don't Leave Me Lyrics 19 years ago
They're not really going to break up. My favorite BLink line, "...one more time with feeling," is the crux of this song. As in, that's what directors say to actors when they want them to ham it up. He's putting on an act. He's not really sorry about his actions, but that's okay because she's not serious about leaving him either. They're just playing the "breakup" game where one partner threatens the other to get the apology and affirmation that he/she wants and the other one plays along and they have a merry little tiff and everything's back to normal in a day or two. Like the song says, "It's not the first" time this has happened, and it won't be the last.

The Beatles – Lovely Rita Lyrics 19 years ago
Call me strange, but I've always imaged that this song was about a man faking a uniform fetish to get out of paying a parking ticket. It plays quite nicely, though, next to the rest of SPLHCB, though I've also thought it would sound cool on Abbey Road.

Styx – A.D. 1928 Lyrics 19 years ago
Paradise Theater was a concept album. The Best of Times was the focal point of the album and AD 1928 and AD 1958 intentionally have the same tune as TBOT, to draw the focus to it. AD 1928 was optimistic, TBOT was melencholy, and AD 1958 was a tearful farewell. Much old-style stage theater incorporated songs from the middle into the intro and conclusions. Once again, Dennis DeYoung is the showman all the way.

Styx – Miss America Lyrics 19 years ago
This song critiques the media for telling young women that they have no worth unless they're sex objects. More true now than when it was written. BTW, FreddieIsMyIdol, the Styx song Fallen Angel is all about how disappointing it is to see "good" people go bad. Also, Show Me the Way says "All the heroes and legends I knew as a child have fallen to idols of clay." Styx is such a great positive counter-culture group.

Styx – Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man) Lyrics 19 years ago
Definately one of Styx's most distinct intros...one that makes you stop and listen. Pity that the metaphor of masturbation is everywhere in the song (palm of your hand, head needs a rest, can't beat don't blow it.)

The Beatles – Lady Madonna Lyrics 19 years ago
To me, it has always sounded like a criticism of Catholics' hardline against birth control. It's about a woman who's life has been ruined because she can't afford to take care of all her kids. She just lies around the house waiting for the government check to arrive. Not sure of the significance of the days of the week.
