A Miller telling his tale in tavern says Chaucer to me... well, as someone else mentioned, the Miller's Tale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller%27s_Tale) is raunchy but moreover it is a tale of adultery and cuckoldry. maybe the narrator's wife turns pale upon hearing it from a sudden pang of guilt and the narrator can't help but notice and "wouldn't let her be". However, she denies his accusations and "says there is no reason". | |

| Saltpeter is ridiculously far off, not even on the same continent... it's got nothing to do with OCD. It's a song about aesthetics, as Cee-Lo himself admits to being very concious of what he wears etc (read some interviews). The idea is every move you make, every word you say is part of who you are and to lead a good life its components must strive towards perfection. And it's all about realizing this while maintaining the proper sense of perspective so as not to be superficial or self concious. It's the sort of persepective you need to create art / music. I'd say the creative mindset is the most prevalent theme of the album and NOT mental illness, though the two are related, no? | |

| This song is about the meaninglessness, nihilism, and boredome of Generation X and arguably the subsequent generation. The youth is trying to find meaning somewhere ("you search for your demigods") but it's not there, nothing is zen. It's all about a lack of spiritual nourishment. "raindogs howl for the centuries" is a reference to Ginsberg's "howl", which deals with similar themes. | |

| This song is very obviously about drugs. I liked it a lot. Then I tried mushrooms, and it now has a whole new meaning. This song captures the feel of a psychadelic halucinagen EXTREMELY well, perhaps not completely intentionally so, since it can very well be about drugs in general. But anyway, "a new religion prescribed" can indeed refer to drugs themselves but it also captures that beatific euphoria of a crazy trip. "there's no one here, people everywhere" is definitely the general feeling of a bad trip, as you start losing yourself and the world around you. So I won't deny that this song might not have been intended to chronicle the acid trip, but that's the general vibe I get from it, and since Homme is no stranger to a menagerie of different drugs, perhaps his sentiments were similar. | |

this song is most certainly about getting old and the regret that comes with age. " gold teeth and a curse for this town were all in my mouth. only, i don't know how they got out, dear. turn me back into the pet that i was when we met. i was happier then with no mind-set. " He is old and has gold teeth now. Having been complacent about his life (this town) for years, he begins yearning for his lost love and and abandons his complacency. " and if you'd 'a took to me like a gull takes to the wind. well, i'd 'a jumped from my tree and i'd a danced like the king of the eyesores and the rest of our lives would 'a fared well. " The chorus is him idly imagining how life mighta been. He idealizes the love of his youth, now gone. " new slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries. hope it's right when you die, old and bony. dawn breaks like a bull through the hall, never should have called but my head's to the wall and i'm lonely. " This is all straightforward. He's getting lonly and turning to the past for consolation. It's new slang around him because he's getting old, and he notices the dirt on the fries as a metaphor for the flaws in his comfortable but wasted existence. " god speed all the bakers at dawn may they all cut their thumbs, and bleed into their buns 'till they melt away. " Here he's just poetically expressing his bitterness. I dig it. It's actually a pretty sad song. |
