| Bright Eyes – Smoke Without Fire Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
To me this song sounds like it's about someone asking for help for problems which aren't as bad as they're making out. Maybe they're complaining of hardships they don't have or aren't really a problem. Hence "smoke without fire" could be worry or sadness without a real reason. Maybe the "brother be afraid of the flames" is a warning that that real flames of sadness or worry should be feared, not the trivial things currently being moaned about. Like, don't worry about sadness without real reason. When you experiece real flames you'll know all about it. |

| Idlewild – American English Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
To me, this song is more about applying meanings of songs to yourself and writing/listening to music, then it is about the merging of britian and america. Because, being a Scottish band, I really dont think Idlewild would refer to Britain as 'England' in their title as Britain and England are very different things. It would be a blatant mistake that no one from the British Isles ever makes. However, the title would make more sense if the mearning of the song was to do with writing and more literary things, as 'American English' is actually what the english language used in the USA is called. The way it is spoken in Britain is called 'British English.' So perhaps this song is making reference to the way we communicate, rather than the relationship between britain and america. That makes more sense to me than any political meaning. Any one else believe so? |

| Garbage – Bleed Like Me Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I honestly believe that this song isn't about self harm per se, but uses the phrases 'bleed like me' and 'you should see my scars' metaphorically. To me it is obvious that this song is more about understanding other people's pain and problems, and asking them to step into your shoes. "hey baby, can you bleed like me" is basically the question 'are you feeling pain like i am?' along with the suggestion that others should see that others are scarred by their own troubles too. I can understand why this song looks like a teenage angst anthem, but there is something very mature about it, espacially the way it is portrayed. I don't think this song is a cliche at all. Neither do i think it's 'middle school-ish.' This song is simply about expressing pain. Questioning how other people feel and for what reasons. Everyone is hurt by different situations and no one bleeds quite like yourself. |

| Modest Mouse – A Manic Depressive Named Laughing Boy Lyrics | 20 years ago |

I found out recently that the name 'Isaac' means laughing boy. I don't know if this is on purpose or is just an amazing coincidence. If its not a mistake, then does that mean Issac is a manic depressive? |

| Modest Mouse – Float On Lyrics | 20 years ago |

I really love modest mouse, their sound, their abstract lyrics, the past history of the members... i have five of their albums... an it's all because of this song. I started out on Float On too. Come on people, it's not a bad thing to hear a song and like it. The people who are complaining about others clocking on to MM, about how they're the REAL fans are in fact the real posers. Yes, thats right, all you hardcore modest mouse fans are the real posers, cause you don't care if these people like the music, all you care about is that they're cramping your indie fanatic style. Modest mouse are about the music, not whether you can prove yourself to be indie enough. Don't dis these people if they like the music or if they've only heard one song because that's where everyone started out. You weren't born having heard all the modest mouse songs, you must have heard one, then another, and slowly became a fan. It's what happened to me, and is what's happening to the people around me that you're now calling 'posers.' Doesn't make them any worse than you. You can at least be happy that your 'favourite' band is now getting the recognition and play time they're always deserved. |

| Franz Ferdinand – The Dark of the Matinee Lyrics | 21 years ago |

This song really strikes a chord with me cause Alex Kapranos as a teenager went to our local school. The song reflects what's being drummed into us: Go through school and in the end, make it and be something. It's a factory, churning out teenagers into the real world to 'make it' though we aren't too sure what 'making it' even entails. I think that's what is being referred to in the last verse. The other verses talk about what its like in high school, about teenage love and skiving school. This song is not homosexual at all, the ties and blazers are school uniform that we all must wear, both girls and boys. This is probably one of my favourite songs, not only does it mean a lot, but the tune is absolutley amazing. |
