Nah. There's a good chance that this is not about drugs. It may sound like it. But, Elliott Smith was kind of a phony. Don't get me wrong, he's probably my most favored artist of all time, but, he wanted to be 'cool' like anyone else, you or me. He used drugs as metaphors long before he actually got into them. Way back to his self-titled album. According to all his friends he didn't do much but drink booze. He didn't even do heroin until the Figure 8 tour. And he smoked it by the way. He never shot it. So, back in '94 when he was metaphoring hard drugs, he didn't actually do them.
You folks gotta stop thinking immediately of drugs while listening to his songs. Believe me, they get even better when you see beyond that. |

elliott smith said that it was only after he moved to LA that he got into heroin (and crack). also, from what i know, he primarily smoked the heroin he did. so it wouldn't be white. it would be black...black tar. so, my guess would be that the drug referred to in this song would be cocaine...but that's just me...i me my own opinion. nobody's wrong here. the songs are about what they mean to you. |
