Pink Floyd – Sheep Lyrics 15 years ago
The song fits in with Dogs and Pigs. The Pig in question for this song is the uber-rich billionaires at the top of the banking and capitalist pyramid. The dogs are the middle classes, hungry to get to the top of the pile, providing the pigs with their power they bully the sheep and maintain the privelege of the pigs; mistakenly believing that they too will one day benefit from the disparity in wealth. The sheep are the rest, the soap-opera watchiung, big brother loving consumer. Fed a diet of junk food, celebrity, consumerism, materialism they happily watch as their real velue is syphoned away by the dogs to the ever greedy pigs. To the song:

'Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away,
only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air'

Numbed by the media, consumerism, materialism the sheep hardly notice how unfair everything is

'You better watch out, there may be dogs about.
I've looked over Jordan, and I have seen things are not what they seem.'

To stay out of trouble they keep their heads down, standing up for yourself will see you cross the Jordan, and that's no fun.

'What do you get for pretending the dangers not real.
Meek and obedient you follow the leader
down well trodden corridors, into the valley of steel.
What a surprise! A look of terminal shock in your eyes.'

You only need to get the first sheep down the corridor to the slaughterhouse, with its metal walls leading to the knives. The idea that "it couldn't happen to us" won't save you when it turns out you've meekly followed the status quo.

'Now things are really what they seem. No, this is no bad dream.'

And then you realise

'The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want He makes me down to lie.
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by.
With bright knives He releaseth my soul.
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places.
He converteth me to lamb cutlets.
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger.
When cometh the day we lowly ones,
trough quiet reflection and great dedication,
master the art of karate,
lo, we shall rise up,
and then we'll make the buggers eyes water.'

A bit tongue in cheek, but the verse reflects on the status quo: that this is the purpose of the sheep. The wish to learn karate shows the impotence of their position - a wish for something that allows you to be stronger than the bullies.

'Bleating and babbling I fell on his neck with a sream.
Wave upon wave of demented avengers
march cheerfully out of obscurity unto the dream.'

Tragic lines. Through anger, frustration they turn over the regime of the dogs, they march cheerfully from their obscure past of being the nobodies into the dream. Not a reality, but another dream, pigs still on top, promising that anyone can succeed, anyone can become a pig.

'Have you heard the news? The dogs are dead!
You better stay home and do as you're told,
get out of the road if you want to grow old '

And the new dogs have arrived. Preserving the power of those on top in the misplaced faith that one day they too will benefit. The pigs remain on top and watch as the rebels take on the role of those they overthrew.

Some first date fucks you wish they were something more. Some first date fucks you imagine they will be until that split second after you come, and reality slaps you round the face. And some first date fucks you know before you even get them into bed that you'll hate the the second you shoot your load... but you still fuck them, don't you?

A song about impotence, in every way.

Placebo – Meds Lyrics 19 years ago
Sounds like a night out, taking someone home and getting so caught up in the thrill of the sex, and those stupid promises you make in someone else's arms, and the consequence of her forgetting to take her meds.

"I was alone staring over the ledge
Trying my best not to forget
All manner of joy, all manner of glee
And our one heroic pledge

How it mattered to us, how it mattered to me
And the consequences
I was confused by the birds and the bees
Forgetting if I meant it"

In the passion of the moment, he makes one of those regretable commitments, so enjoy the birds and the bess that he doesn't really know if he was serious or not.

Pink Floyd – When the Tigers Broke Free Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is not specifically attacking the British government, it's against the mechanism of war. The most that the majority of the soldiers could hope for was to get back to their families, their farms, their jobs alive. The chance to live as you do every day. There was no gain for them, just the hope that they could get back to their ordinary life. There was nothing for them to win. For the soldiers, British, Gemran, French, Russian, American, Candian, Japanese, Italian and all the countless millions, they didn't want this, they just wanted to be home, with their loved ones. The meme of war is a terrible thing.

The reference to the stamp was not an attack on King George. How could he have signed millions of letters? It's a testament to the inane regularity of normal lives being extinguished in that time that they needed a rubber stamp be able to keep up with the volume of terrible news.

Pink Floyd – Goodbye Blue Sky Lyrics 20 years ago
"Did you ever wonder
Why we had to run for shelter
When the promise of a brave new world
Unfurled beneath a clear blue sky"

OK, I see this pretty clearly. It's an extremely bitter comment on all those who promise better things down the barrel of a gun. Over and over the promise of a brave new world. The author questions why it always brings so much pain. He is literally saying "I'm being told this is better for me, so why again am I running, hiding in fear?" Again and again we have the same idea, invade for their own good, bring them feudalism, monarchy, communism, facism, democracy. Every time the promise of better things. Every time the bombs fall and the children's blue sky is wiped out.

The Cardigans – My Favourite Game Lyrics 20 years ago
Your average relationship. He's a badboy, the first verse tells us the way he treats her. Second verse tells us how she thought that she'd be the one to change him, that she was the one who'd make a decent man of him. Third verse is her acceptance that it hasn't worked, that is was a stupid idea to think that she could stop him being an asshole, and now she's cold. By the end, she stills sees herself as some sort of angel, despite her choosing someone who was obviously bad and admitting that, in the end, it was all just a stupid experiement to make her feel more secure.

I like Robbie's songs, but quoting Gandhi in them is a touch conceited.

Garbage – Only Happy When It Rains Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this sums up the victim culture perfectly. Being happy, succesful, popular, it's too much work for people, so instead they celebrate their failure. People like to think they are unwilling victims, because it validates their underachievement. If you've had an easy time and you're flipping burgers, you've failed. If it's always rained, if life been a bitch to you, and you're serving fries, well, you've not done bad. You're still serving happy meals, but now you've got the perfect excuse.

When you have that level of confidence, you KNOW you're a person's religion. This is for the girls who come back to mine, just so they know :o)

I will be your religion
This thing you'll never doubt
You're not the only one

My song for the evenings...

The Cranberries – Zombie Lyrics 20 years ago
Some songs are open for interpretation. This is not one of them. They have a clear message that needs to be understood. The message that blowing up children, women, innocent people is not war, it's not honourable, it's f***ing pathetic. For blowing up my hometown ("loyalists" that time), for the fear you made me feel searching my school for bombs, for the poor sods you blew to pieces... this is a big f**k you. Neither the British or the Irish respect you, whichever "side" you believed you were fighting for. The poor bastards that lived in the hell you made are 1000 times braver than you. This peace is not yours, it was earned through the tolerance and bravery of the Catholics and Protestants of Northern Ireland. The ordinary people, those who did not heed the "battle call".

I enjoy the way the game from their childhood was a portent of what was to come. He would always win the fight, she was always going to lose in all their dealings. Looking back she registers her role in their relationship was always to be the one that falls down.

Pink Floyd – Breathe Lyrics 20 years ago
I know it's bad form to say that other's opinions are wrong, but in the case of DSOTM, the meaning, the intended meaning; what Floyd were trying to get across, what they explicitly say they are trying to get through to us is the concept of regular, every day life driving you insane. All of the songs on this album deal with something common, be it rules, capitalism, passing of time, war... how could it all not drive you insane? Breathe deals with something so fundamentally sad, that we're mortal, that if we really understood it we'd all go mad. Instead we rush, rush, rush through life, always on the way to the next appointment, the next day, the next task, to our grave.

Jesus, I've read some pretentious bollocks in my life but this place takes the piss. I can't even start to fathom the depth of loneliness in some of the contributors here. Really, read it back and tell me you aren't taking it all a little too personally. The lyrics are secondary to the music. How many threads must I read here with the usual "It's about drugs... no it's about religion... no it's about relationships (I know my grilfriend just dumped me).... no it's about spiritual enlightenment" bollocks. You're all useless.

Soundgarden – The Day I Tried to Live Lyrics 20 years ago
"The day I tried to win
I dangled from the power lines
And let the martyrs stretch"

That is such a fantastic image. Picture the man, dangling from the power lines. Like birds perched up there, he's safe until he's grounded. All the passing would-be martyrs realise this and stretch for their chance of a noble death, being electrocuted whilst "saving" a man. The irony of course being that they would kill him. Great line.

Coldplay – Shiver Lyrics 20 years ago
Obviously a song about unrequited love, but it's darker than that. It's heading towards obsession. Changing everything about yourself just so you can be with someone ("I'll change for good"). Giving up you own opinion, needs, desires ("You'll always get your way"). Ultimately this guy can't take no for an answer ("From the moment I wake, to the moment I sleep
I'll be there by your side; just you try and stop me "). As he sings this he's starting to become desperate ("And is this my final chance of getting you? ").

This is love, but destructive love. He doesn't care about himself, his life, his needs, his identity, just about being with her. If the man singing is 25, you should fear him, if he's a teen, you can put it down to the age ;o)
