"I see the Union Jack in flames, let it burn"
I don't think this is a great lyric at all. There are better ways to get your point across then advocating burning a flag which means so much to millions of people. Can you imagine the outrage if someone sang about burning the aboriginal flag?Strange to see a band that are usually so articulate and well-spoken to stoop to the levels of the rent-a-crowd, feral buffoons we see burning the flag every second week while protesting against something they know nothing about.
And by the way, this song was written by Rob Hirst, not Garrett. |

what a great song. As for the meaning, well I think its a satirical commentary on the use of slave labour in breweries in third world countries. Or it could be just about getting pissed |

| Limp Bizkit – Behind Blue Eyes (The Who cover) Lyrics

I think most people here have summed it up - Limp Biszkit totally destroyed this song beacuse they not only did a shit job of covering it but they removed the most crucial part of the song and replaced it with some childish arrogant rambling. If you're going to cover a great song, have the respect to do it properly. Disgraceful. |

This is the definitely one of the best songs ever recorded, but like some of the previous comments I feel the guitar solo is overrated. As one person said, it is techincally very good, but just lacks a bit of feeling - kind of sounds like someone playing scales over and over again. I usually switch the song off before the solo starts. But that's just me. |

I have to say, katie-s, that this attitude annoys me. I really don't like bands who 'disown' their old stuff and refuse to play it anymore, despite the fans still really wanting to hear it. The fans are the ones who got behind them in the beginning and provided them with the oppurtunity to make their arty, serious music. The very, very least they can do is show their appreciation by giving the fans their money's worth when they come to see them live. The decision to stop playing the crowd's favourite song smacks of arrogance and selfishness. |

Anyone else think that his voice sounds a lot like Peter Garrett in this song? When I first heard it on the radio I thought "Hadn't the Oils broken up?" Great song from a good bunch of perth boys. |

Unions are for corrupt, lazy bludgers. We've got no need for them where I come from - if you work hard you get looked after, otherwise you can piss off - which is the way it should be. Always. |

| The Rolling Stones – All Down The Line Lyrics

Another great song off the best album of all time.
I don't think you can really say Dylan or the Beatles wrote better lyrics than the Stones, or vice versa. The Stones lyrics are perfect for Jagger's voice and for their music. Dylan's lyrics are perfect for his music. You can't compare the two. Can you imagine Mick Jagger singing Blowing in the wind with just an accoustic guitar? When you listen to the stones you wan't songs about rock'nroll, drugs, booze and women (although they could, and did, write some deeper and very good lyrics). |

excellent song, pesrsonally my favourite on urban hymns.
Just a quick note on that Stones thing, it wasn't the stones that sued them, it was some dodgy manager named Allan Klein who mamanged the stones in the sixties. He got them to sign some deal that gave him the rights to most of their songs they had at that time. The Stones still don't own the rights to Satisfaction. |

| Dwight Yoakam – Ain't That Lonely Yet Lyrics

a brilliant song, one of my all time favourites. As for the meaning, its pretty self-explanatory, a woman hurts him and now wants him to take her back. I think its a little bit deeper than that; he is really tempted and the whole song is him talking to himself, telling himself that she is bad for him and he needs to forget about her. Very well written and beautifully sung. |

What a fucking joke. Another song whining about authority and how opressed they are. For fucks sake, they live in america, not north korea. All this crap about how we should have no leaders and be a bunch of fucking anarchists. The bottom line is without authority society would fall apart. These losers should stick to smoking pot and skating and leave running things to someone with an IQ above single figures. Fuck authority? Sounds like some little schoolboy who got kept back after class. Fucking losers |

american girls make him cry - you bitches.
As for the line 'pills and ashes' - does it mean he turns to drugs (ashes=pot?) to deal with the pain these girls cause him? Adam has been known to indulge in a few substances from time to time. But that might be a bit too obvious - Adam's usually more abstract than that. |

| AC/DC – Ride On Lyrics

My absolute favourite AC/DC song. This is them at their most bluesy. Its the now 25th anniverary of Bons death here in my hometown of Perth, Australia, where Bon was raised. Theres all sorts of tributes going on and a lot of discussion about Bon. The prevailing attitude is that, as a songwriter, Bon was only interested in women, drugs and booze, and that he had no sensistive side. I would direct people who have that opinion to have a listen to this tune. For me, the lyrics are some of the finest ever written. They're about change, reflection...but not written in a poetic, sugar coated (dare I say it - Dylan like?) manner - just an honest, working class man's assessment of his life. Its like hes giving advice, but not giving advice - he's just talkng to you. He could be any bloke down at the pub. He is everyman's rock star, he is a blue collar hero to millions. He is Bon. |

| Jet – Look What You've Done Lyrics

I am tired of people knocking Jet. I remember when they first came out here in Australia and they weren't on commercial radio - they were the coolest band around. All of a sudden they started selling records by the truckloads and the usual cardiagn wearing, ultra-cool music fans declared them to be sellouts and not 'real' rock 'n roll. To me, these idiots are as bad as any other 'fan' who jumps on a bandwagon.
Yes, Jet are heavily influenced by the Beatles and Rolling Stones, but so what? They play honest, blue collar rock and put on a great live show. No, I am not a "drooling teenie", I consider myself to be a serious music fan whose collection includes many. many Stones, Beatles, Who and Dylan CD's. And if you actually listen to these old bands, you realise that they are not as original as you think - most of the Stones licks are either copied verbatim or are different inerpretations of old blues tunes - Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Robert Johnson. All they did was update the music and introduce it to a new audience. Isn't that what Jet is doing? Its about passing the music along through generations. And personally, I much prefer seeing the "drooling teenies" rock out to Jet than listening to some crap like Britney Spears.
Having said all that, I actually think this song is shit....but the rest of their songs rock!!! |

| Eminem – Just Lose It Lyrics

Eminem is a try hard, pathetic little punk. God he makes me laugh up there in his baggy pants and bandana doing his best to look like a black man. He takes the piss out of everyone, and that would be ok except when someone says soemthing about him (Moby) he carries on like the spoilt little brat that he is. Eminem, you are a poofta. The sooner you fade from view, the better.
I feel sorry for the people who are taken in by this little clown's circus act. |

I have been through Wittenoom and it is a very weird place - houses, pubs, shops, the whole works. But the place is deserted - only about five people live there, at its peak there were thousands. It is a true ghost town.
The film clip for this song is bloody good too - it is filmed near Wittenoom, you can get a good idea of the harsh, beautiful country where so many men died. |

this is my favourite midnight oil song. I think the lyrics are about using patriosm as a tool to blind the public to all the political skulduggery that goes on. Very poignant at the moment - like Dylan, the Oils' songs will always be relevant, which, sadly doesn't say much for the progress of society. |

i am a massive oils fan and had the pleasure to meet with Peter Garrett when he came to my university last year. Hes in politics now and even though i don't agree with all his policies, he is a champion bloke and certainly not a typical rock star spending his money on cheap booze and women. Anyone who thinks that is ignorant, misinformed and a drongo. |

| U2 – One Lyrics

i think that for a sad song, this has some of the most uplifting lyrics ever written. To me, the song represents getting over a breakup - realising that while love for another person can be difficult and heartbreaking, it is insignificant compared to the big picture of life - 'one life, one blood....sister, brother'. It is a song celebrating the brotherhood of man and how life rises above these setacks. Just my thoughts, anyway..... also, the line 'you gave me nothing now its all i've got' has to be in the running for the best line in music - ever. |
