| Steve Earle – Rich Man's War Lyrics
|
This song is so insightful. It sympathizes with those Americans going to war against their real ethics, but also points out that the SAME EXACT SITUATION is going on in the Middle-East.
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man's war... |

Yeah. I guess it was released JUST before Bette Midler's... And then later it became a somewhat hit with Tanya Tucker. |

| Neil Young – Let's Impeach The President Lyrics

I love that Neil doesn't even mess with being suble or even tactful-- he makes sure EVERYONE knows what he's thinking, and speaks for those of us who agree with him. |

| Neil Young – Driveby Lyrics
|
Such a sad one, a tune about drive-by shootings, on Sleeps WIth Angels, I believe...
"Well you feel invincible,
It's just a part of life,
There's a feud going on and you don't know,
Drive-by..."
This album was recorded in memory of Cobain after his alleged suicide. Kurt had actually quoted Young's song, "Hey Hey, My My": "It's better to burn out than fade away." |

| Steve Earle – Guitar Town Lyrics

His biggest hit from the 80s, aside from Copperhead Road. Definitely a good one, and well worth a listen. |

| David Bowie – Always Crashing in the Same Car Lyrics
| 20 years ago
|
|
I was thinking along the same lines as jimmymike-- making the same mistakes over and over again, whether they're having to do with drugs, or sex (probably both), or whatever. It's hard to learn from your mistakes sometimes, and it's a bit depressing when you can't. |

| Nickel Creek – When in Rome Lyrics
|
People are always just trying to blend in and do as those around them are doing-- like the saying, "When in Rome..."
If you get too caught up in this, though, you lose your individuality, and so you wonder if you're "stuck in Rome." |

Claim it's your mother. Nothing's cooler than having having a song about your mom. Except for maybe having a song about you. |

It could be from a note someone else wrote-- in the No Code CD case, the lyrics are included and it's definitely not in Vedder's writing. |

| The Wallflowers – When You're On Top Lyrics
| 20 years ago
|
I kind of have two different takes on it.
1) He's fine without this girl. He misses her, nothing's ever as good as when they're together, but he's recovering.
OR...
2) By this time, he's experienced fame and being popular, and so nothing's ever as good as when he's on top, and everyone loves him...
I was discussing this song yesterday, actually, and those are the theories we've proposed. |

| The Wallflowers – Three Ways Lyrics
|
There are various solutions to every problem:
Find a way out (such as learning how to swim or praying for rain when it comes to the burning bridge)
Or just let it happen, though you risk "drifting away.. down into the ground."
Yeah? |

| Johnny Cash – Hurt (Nine Inch Nails cover) Lyrics
| 20 years ago
|
Isn't this a forum to discuss what the song means to you, not who's version is better?
It's not fair to say that Cash's version is way better and that NIN sucks, because it's Reznor's song.
Both versions are really good, and I can definitely relate to the song. Losing your friends and all that was close to, possibly because one gets too caught up with drugs or caught up with oneself. |

Maybe he's hoping the ex has the same feelings, is missing HIM as well: "'Cause you never really tell/ When somebody wants something you want too"
Just throwing it out there. |

| Alanis Morissette – Front Row Lyrics

I think she feels kind of inadequate and inferior to her lover... He's kind of like a movie star to her, and she's just in the front row. Hopeless devoted, but not on the same level.
Or...? |

| Eagles – Learn To Be Still Lyrics

This is my favorite Eagles song-- as far as I get it.. it's about someone who is never satisfied with her own surroundings, no matter how good the conditions may be-- someone who is never satisfied. Reminds me of myself, actually. |

| Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Lyrics
|
Reznor said it was one of his most personal songs... it's actually an anti-drug song.
But it is related to cutting, too, as in you're hurting yourself either way, by doing herion OR by cutting yourself. He wants that message to get through. |

Exactly. We won't show completely natural things, like, say, a woman's breast, on television, but it's completely cool to show grotesque violence on kiddie shows. |

I want to be like Suzie Lightning. She's independent as all hell, gets restless staying in one place... always moving around with no time for him (anymore?). |

| Warren Zevon – Excitable Boy Lyrics
|
|
Uh, to each his own, man. Zevon was pretty anti-government altogether, but if anything, the man was a lefty himself. Generally accepting of everyone, and open-minded about 2nd chances... I don't think he'd be mocking the "liberal wankers," as you put it. |

| Neil Young – Blue Eden Lyrics
|
It seems like such a mellow song with the music, but by his voice and the lyrics, you can tell he's angry. And I like it.
I'd say, since this is on Sleeps with Angels, he's singing to Cobain (keep in mind this whole album was dedicated to him).
"I'll know someday we'll meet again.
We come and go that way, my friend."
and
"You feel invincible; it's just a part of life." |

| Alanis Morissette – Can't Not Lyrics

Actually my favorite Alanis album of them all, definitely underrated. I guess because everyone was expecting another JLP... but anyway....
Such a darkly beautiful song, just like many on Supposed Former. |

| Alanis Morissette – Baba Lyrics

I'm in definite agreement with RaineBM... One of the great things about Alanis' songwriting is how absolutely sarcastic she is. This is totally mocking all those allegedly high-up people in religions. Really, any religion. |
