John Frusciante – Look On Lyrics 19 years ago
I was just listening to this song today and looking at this lyrics page and I think there is a correction to be made. I think it's supposed to be "I went to downtown L.A.
Got picked up by the cops
Didn't get what i wanted
But I didn't care a thought"

instead of

"I went to downtown L.A.
Got picked up by the cops
Didn't get what i wanted
But I didn't care a lot."

Although it's a minor lyrics change - with regards to us interested in the possible meaning of this song - it can make a significant difference.

Great song.

I also will not attempt to grasp the meaning here and now.

Audioslave – Out of Exile Lyrics 20 years ago
How it seems to me:
It is clear the singer is in exile... either in seclusion from others or just simply in exile within himself (mentally I guess).

The part that I am trying to pick at to further understand the song is when he mentions "labor" and being saved by it. I started to consider possible analogies between birth itself and these lyrics, but I couldn't get very far with that. Hopefully more people post on this song soon.

FYI: spires and gables are structures or formations, such as a steeple, that tapers to a point at the top.

(I would think he is somehow referencing Churches there.)

John Frusciante – A Loop Lyrics 20 years ago
First of all let me say that this song has the ability to grow on someone, because I paid no attention to it at first, but now I really enjoy it.

This idea just came to me this morning while reading the lyrics. I think this song is somehow connected to the song Afterglow. For some reason the first two lines:
"No one makes a loop around me
No one 'round here makes a decision"
made me think he was referring to religion or morality or something like that. So then going from there it seemed that he is referencing life and death and some sort of afterlife possibly. He mentions angels, and millions of people leaving before us.

I think the end of the song helps explain the rest. He is describing current life as being incredibly confusing and paradoxical; icicles are flames - "everything is what it is not." It seems that this current life of paradox is somewhat troubling to him and more importantly that he actually thinks "life" is to come. Hence the lyric in "Afterglow" that says "Death before life".

All of that is just a quick observation by me. Some of it is confusing in itself, but I do think there is a correlation between the two songs. Also I think that John is not in any way referring to religion - but simply the current state of contradictory being and some other place where millions have gone before us; this place actually being "life". The only reason I mentioned religion is because like I said, the first two lines inexplicably made me think of a controlling idea such as religion/morality and from there I thought I started to understand the rest of the song better.

Just wanted to chime in here. I don't know about the history of the song, although I think it is an awesome song.

However it is both pertinent and vital to mention that George Harrison may have made the greatest songs ever.

Thank You.

Fish in the Sand.

AMAZING.

Amazing song. Might be the greatest song ever. I know to say that is completely opinionated; but that may be what is so appealing about this song to me - I think it is a universal concept.

This song is clearly political and clearly partisan. Which is not necessarily a bad thing - but blatant partisan concerns or closed-mindedness is a turn off to me.

John Frusciante – A Firm Kick Lyrics 20 years ago
By the line, "I never say what I intend to
But does it mean that much to you", I think John means that the person John is talking about in the song does not or cannot understand/appreciate what John "intends to say - but never does."

I know the feeling of never telling someone what you intend to, perhaps because you're nervous or scared - but its the act of preparing to tell someone something and then eventually keeping it to yourself (I would think that most people have done this.)

So I was saying above that I appreciate that John put that in the song because I think it literalized a strong feeling/idea that I know I've experienced.

Good analysis dosedxbyyou, I enjoyed it.

Maybe the end, "and you can function as someone besides who you are", just re-affirms the song as a whole. He is saying that you can actually function as someone besides who you are - which is a scary thought. Yet - just because you can function in such a manner doesn't mean it is a good thing.

Who knows if this is at all right though - because if he is saying "you CAN'T function..." then that would obviously re-affirm the fact that you shouldn't try to be someone who are not - thus making my statement above obsolete.

Either way - I think the only important thing is that we think about these things and discuss them, I think the purpose of most music/art/expression is not to get the answer but to undertand the question. That is why I enjoy this website, and erveryones comments.

interesting comparisson, I'll look into that. I just wanted to say that I probably listened to this son 3 times as much as the others on S.C.W.P. but I havent even considered what it might mean. I like listening to the song so much and experiencing the feelings and thoughts that accompany listening to it, I have yet to consider the meaning. - and I won't start now (maybe soon), but I'll play it some more tonight and just enjoy as always.

John Frusciante – Cut-Out Lyrics 20 years ago
He'll pay to be cut out of this cycle of futility? Thats my first interpretation anyway.

moments taking eachothers place is just an example of nothing eventful, just time passing. never knowing who you are - constraints on people's knowledge. This of course would assume that 'knowing' who you are is essential - and since you can't the songwriter would pay to be cut out of such a cycle.

I like this song a lot - however, I think that it also assumes certain things that neglect the possibility of other important things in life. maybe I just don't get it yet - who knows. I'll keep listening to it regardless.

Well it's probably the most interesting line of the song to me. I'm not really sure how much I buy into it being exactly true - but I think I understand what he means. And when you think in that way, I feel it is an awesome way to be.

I take it as though he is saying every point in time is important and maybe that it is good to have a heightened sense of awareness that all the moments of your life are important. I don't know - now I'm iin an exercise myself (confused). I think John always provokes a sort of mental exercise - which of course could lead to doing physical things.

I put that "yea" in at the end because I think it might be the most exciting point of the whole song, I don't really know where to start when describing what I like about it though.

Very complex song to say the least, in my opinion. Sorry, having trouble coming up with anything provacative to say here - it would be nice to eventually get a grasp on the songs meaning though.

Yea I haven't thought of it that way. I haven't yet tried to link much of JF's work with RHCP, but I recently read that John said in an interview that he thought Anthony might have wrote Parallel Universe with John in mind or something like that. Another note about this song; I love the ending of the song, like so many his.

probably my favorite line: "I never say what I intend to
But does it mean that much to you"

I think John fit a whole bunch of thoughts, feelings, and idea into this short quote. I felt like I understood what he was getting at with that; maybe its not complex and everyone understands what he's saying there - which is fine. Either way, I appreciate that it was in the song.

your comments show me what I already thought, which is that Frusciante's songs are very complex, but he is such a good musician because I think his music can attract people on all levels from just enjoying the sound to appreciating it's meaning.

yea I know what you mean about wanting to discuss the music you listen to so much with others. Thats why I like this site, and look forward to seeing if other people posted comments on songs I like.

As for the meaning of this song I really am still not sure when reviewing the lyrics. I am trying to simplify things by thinking about nothing but the song title, although the lyrics throughout the song are what I am most interested in.

John Frusciante – In Relief Lyrics 21 years ago
dosedxbyyou, I think your comment about going through something tough but finding relief in it - hit the nail on the head.

I think the most important line is "Cuz what you need you are". After listening to many of John's songs he seems to be very concerned with the idea of fate and everyones ability to affect their own fate. Although it is surely not this simple, I think it is what he is getting at. Thats my opinion.

John Frusciante – Ascension Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is awesome.

I think, like many of John's songs, it has a theme of fate and your current condition. "Review your whole life and you dont have to die", hes saying you can always change if you want to, its never too late. There is plenty more to this song that I'd like to think about. Thats my opinion.

John Frusciante – Wednesday's Song Lyrics 21 years ago
Another awesome song by JF. I think the main point of attack of the lyrics is a sort of inner conflict. Such as making it through the day by seeing things another way. Not becoming what other's thought you should've been, but realizing that inside you're what you can see. I like the part,

"You know I do miss this girl
To show I am in a swirl of sun
Being what I've got the joy"

I think this is more inner conflict. I relate it to a guy missing a girl and he wants badly to share with her the great quality he has; namely the metaphoric 'swirl of sun' he is in, as well as the joy he has. Thats just my opinion.

John Frusciante – Head (Beach Arab) Lyrics 21 years ago
I have never even heard this song before. But I want to suggest something anyway.

Have you ever read Albert Camus novel "The Stranger?"
The reason I bring it up is because its a very interesting story about an extremely apathetic man who at one point senselessly kills an arab on a sun drenched Algerian beach.

If you have ever read The Stranger, when you see a song title with "Beach Arab" in perentheses - trust me you would think of this story right away.

Otherwise, I'll have to hear the song to have idea what it's meaning is.

John Frusciante – Look On Lyrics 21 years ago
Awesome song.

I think the title speaks for itself. Whatever happens, especially things you don't want or expect - like getting picked up by the cops, when you're empty inside, when you're set up, when you can't tell what is dreaming - look past it. When you're negatively caught up in the present - look on to the future.

If this is right, I guess the next question challenging this would be what happens when you "look on" and only see a bleak future?

I'm not sure if I'm making much sense - either way this song is awesome. The guitar is great.

John Frusciante – Fallout Lyrics 21 years ago
Awesome song!

I think it portrays hopelessness. You're alone, soon you're going to be swallowed up, fallout of love again and your dreams all end - that is pretty dismal. Although I think there is reason to hope. Because the songwriter is saying that he knows "you're in pain" - so maybe you're not totally alone.

John Frusciante – Every Person Lyrics 21 years ago
I think hes trying to suggest a way to think about life - to think of life in the context of past, present, and future. Once you do this I think he is saying that the result is that you can get the most out of the present time.

"Every day is each day thats past." "A hand's all I feel right now. It's all I am."

Acknowledging the pasts affect on the present, and then taking advantage of thinking this way by getting the maximum out of the present.

Tough song to understand - but very good nonetheless.

John Frusciante – Chances Lyrics 21 years ago
This is complex. I think, this song is driven by the concept of fate. Chances coming and going allows you to become who you think you are.

"No one goes back 'cause they're all there" is very important. I think he's acknowledging that for each person there is one continuing fate/life (past, present, future) and that chances come along that allow us to affect our fate for the better. In the end I think he is maybe saying that he has been making the best of chances that come along - affecting what his fate/life has always been leading to. The grand finale would be to cut off fate - by taking advantage of the chances he is given.

If any of what I think here makes sense then I think the irony is that fate/life is an obvious overbearing controlling thing but it has embedded in it certain chances that allow you to take control of it.
