Just a general observation about Gary Lightbody. A high proportion of his songs seem to involve him apologizing to someone. Another large proportion of his songs involve his being socially deviant in someway (e.g breaking into a girl's house to leave her a note; wanting to do serious violence to the guy who stole his girl (when its all over we still have to clean up the mess)). Seems to be a pattern emerging, and I'm starting to have a bit of sympathy for his girl. |

Just to chime in - Mattmc387 and flyingrobot are correct. See http://www.ubu.com/sound/ball.html, a web site devoted to Hugo Ball on which you can here the I Zimbra lyrics in their urtext form, sans DB and co. Having done so, one can only marvel at how cool the TH song came out, since the HB original strikes me as esoteric crap. Sorry if there are fans out there. . . |

With due respect, I think Nickymcgla might be taking too cynical a view of these things. I've certainly had moments in my life when it all clicked, became clearer, and when I 'felt suddenly alive', and I don't use drugs nor see that as a necessary part of this. I would argue that in most cases, drugs have the opposite effect, by eliminating clarity, and divorcing oneself from reality. That said, I'm open to the possibility that using drugs was the error that he is now apologizing for, recognizing the harm it inflicted in someone he cares for. |

I'm increasingly drawn to this tune as well. I think its really interesting how they structure the beginning with the layered guitars stacking up with each four bars, and then when the bass and the distorted guitars kick in, well, it makes my foot just a little heavier on the gas pedal. Amazing tune. |

Here's a theory about the title: Obviously the song is about apologies, and the way he writes makes it sound like its to a woman. How does 90% of the male world say I'm sorry to a woman??? It's usually with a box of chocolates. I think the song is a musical box of chocolates for his girl. |

Random and whimsical observations about the odds and sodds inhabiting an old haunt of IA's. Very witty I'd like to add. |

I think that Suezzle makes a good point about the possibility (likelihood) that the song may operate on several levels, one being quite dark and apocalyptic. I played this for my wife last night. She's not a native English speaker, but is a professional musician, and her reaction to it was decidedly gloomy. She felt that it sounded like disaster based solely on the music. Regardless, the song is beautiful and powerful, obviously contains an message of love, but also of desperation and loss. I guess that's why I find it quite moving. While the music couldn't be more different, it reminds me of Neal Young's 'The needle and the Damage done'. |

Sounds like a semi admission of disaster between a pair of lovers hopelessly addicted to drugs. |
