I thought of it a bit differently. I have always thought of this song along the same lines as tallgirl. which is why instead of "so like a show I gotta be strong", I have always heard "so like good Job I gotta be strong". I thought that is what it said for the lyrics in the cd book thing too. I'll check again later, but it makes sense doesn't it? I think I get the gist of the song overall. He wants to know there is something good to live for, because right now all he knows is that he wants to be the best, but he knows it's wrong. that's what I get from it. but then I look at it line by line and all the tell me something goods and the I want something bads get jumbled. but basically. I love this song. It's beautiful. his voice, the lyrics, the music, the meaning, everything. |

I think the part "because I've got to be your essential to survive" should actually be "because I've got to be. *You're* essential to survive." as in you are essential. that's how another lyrics site shows it. and it makes sense. he's saying that he's making God a part of his life because he needs to be alive, and for Him God is essential to life. I absolutely love this song. and I think Matt Thiessen has a really good voice for songs like this one and softer to me and songs like that. I can listen to them over and over and over again and almost never tire of hearing them. |

I think it's about alot of things. most that people have already mentioned. there are definately parts about how obsessed with sex our culture has become and how it's being used by people all over. I think that one is important. how people use it. the media uses it to sell stuff. teenagers use it for "so called liberty". there's also the part that's just about how it's easier than love. people that are afraid of dying alone turn to sex because it's easier than love, but sometimes they become addicted to it because it's just about the sex, not the people they are having sex with. I think it's all so sad, but I love this song, because it means that someone else has realized it and how sad it is. I love that switchfoot is music for people that think... wow, that seems like alot of thoughts squished together. they make more sense in my head I think. |

omg...I had a sort of revelation about this song...only sort of, I am not quite done figuring out exactly what the lyrics mean. I've just got the gist of them. what I did think of is how this isn't really written like a sonnet, but at the same time it sort of is. you see there is this poem by leonard cohen called "summer haiku". it isn't actually a haiku, but he called it a haiku because the purpose of it was to capture the feeling of a haiku. I think this song isn't actually a sonnet, but it's built like a sonnet. a sonnet's structure is that the first 2 quatrains set up a problem and the 3rd tries to fix it and the couplet provides a solution. I think this song is built like that except it isn't set into quatrains and couplets. he's got the problem with disliking lovers (if that's what the lyrics are about. I am still working on that) and then he tries to overcome it and at the end he does. I think that's why it's a sonnet as much as leonard cohen's poem is a haiku. sorry to introduce all this leonard cohen and stuff about the thematic structure of a sonnet, but it seemed important to share. I hope someone understands it. |

love this song sooo much...um...meaning? same thing I said for this song under Dallas Green's name! having the person you love, basically, be in charge of your fate. As in they are trying to decide whether or not they want to stay with you, and you just want them to make the decision and fast, because it's hurting you to have to wait. Does that make sense?...I feel like elaborating even though I think Is aid it clearly...I just feel like it...if you understand you can just not read this. I think it's just describing his state at one point...I guess... "with you on my mind"...kinda straightforward. so he's thinking about this person. Because he likes them. "and my heart held in your hands"...the other person doesn't yet know how they feel, or won't tell him. he has laid himself on the line...he is basically giving his heart to this person and telling them to make up their mind. "screaming break me"...waiting hurts. he wants the decision fast. done. Iove this song. a whole song that's only two lines. two beautiul lines. two beautifully sung beautiful lines...I'm done now. sorry for the long post, but a song only two lines long screams for a long post. |

I hope that all makes sense. this is an awesome cover. the original is better, I'll say that, but I prefer this version. It's more fun, and right now I'm in the mood for a fun song. |

for my writer's craft class we had to bring in a piece of writing that spoke to us. I brought in this...I think that says alot about what I think of it. I agree with other people. the first listen didn't do it for me. I didn't get it with just one listen. I had to listen over and over, and then it clicked. or most of it clicked. somethings are still clicking, that's something I like though. that this is a song that actually requires thought. I think the meaning is trying to keep hold of faith when nothing is the way you once imagined it would be. like when you were a kid, you had "pink house dreams" and the world now is nothing like that. also when everything that makes you feel closer to your faith is being blocked out or overpowered by things you think are meaningless. the imagery in this song blows me away. something else that clicked just this weekend: for awhle I thought the music didn't match the song. that it was too upbeat and needed to be slower to get the feel of the lyrics. I realised I was wrong. the imagery is slightly sad, but he still wants to keep hold of his faith. see, it's happy-ish. the music fits. realising this made me like the song even more. I didn't know that was possible. sorry this was so long. but a great song like this deserves to be discussed in detail. I love this song. it is quickly becoming one of my favourite Ataris songs. |

The hero, someone you love. it's just about thinking what life would be like when a person you really love dies. or you could relate it to how you feel when someone actually has died. what you wish you'd said to them, or what you want to say to them now you have the chance. something like that. wow, it's harder to explain than I thought. Kris has said it's about how the memories of an incident will go farther than the actual incident and the souvenirs you bring back with you. Hence the lines "these relics of remembrance are just like shipwrecks only they're gone faster than the smell after it rains". The souvenirs die quickly, but the memories live on for a long time - "so long, Astoria, I found a map to buried treasure and even if we go home empty handed we'll still have our stories". I'm not totally sure of the meaning of this one. I get that he likes someone and he's leaving. I guess because he's leaving he only wants to love her on the weekend when he'll see her. except that he's knows doing this isn't right. he knows he shouldn't love her if he can't love her all the time, but he can't stop loving her or even figure out what to do - "I'm stuck to these moments, but can I come unglued" - he loves her, but he wants to stop 'cause he can't love her all the time. but he doesn't know what to do - "you've made me lose my focus" so all in all this is an awesome song. and i can relate to alot of the confused thoughts that are going through his head. another awesome song from crowned king!! |

| This is my most favourite switchfoot song! I love how they are a christian rock group, but make music that even non-christians can enjoy. I could just be crazy or weird, but one other really beautiful thing about this song is the singing. I think it makes more sense as "alive...especially where he says "got out of bed today"...kinda hard to get out of bed when you're not alive. one of my ALL TIME fave Ataris songs. It's a song just bursting with optimism. Leave an old depressing life behind to find one to good to be true. but I also think that while he is attempting to stay optimistic about the new better life...he also attempts to keep a grip on reality ("I'm still waiting for the world to come crashing down again") It's happened to him before and he knows it's possible it could happen again. Even so, he's just happy he got that second chance to be happy. well, that's what I take it to mean. anyway, awesome song, awesome band. The Ataris rock my socks!! |
