the part that goes "drive yourself insane tonight its not that far away and i just filled up your tank earlier today" is just a play on words. when you drive someone or something insane you are making them crazy, and when you drive a car you need gas in your tank, so theyre just being funny with words...you cant literally DRIVE things insane. i dont know exactly what this song is about but it has a sad air to it, like he's giving up on something or everything. |

i dont think this song is an insult to every single cop that exists...probably just the one cop hes singing about, which im guessing is one that busted him for something he felt was stupid and unnecessary. on the '97 thread they were saying he was put on probation for something (probably drugs), which makes a lot of sense when comparing that song with this one..."After my court date, I'll forget about you", that line kind of sums it all up....ive never heard an alkaline trio song that makes a broad and general statement that relates to an entire group or issue...they all have to do with small, personal incidents, so i highly doubt they give a shit who your dad is or what he does for a living. |

i think that part alone makes it obvious the song has to do with the actual donner party...theyre lost in the woods and they dont want to be there but they never found a way out (final resting place) and by adding "in pieces" im sure hes talking about the canabalism, since i doubt the people were eaten whole, so pieces of them must have been left behind...

the donner party was lost in the woods (dont recall where they got started) in winter and half of them died and were eaten during that time, so when spring came around (the season after winter) there was no trace of them...get it? also when you freeze to death you just 'fall asleep and die', you dont feel anything. |

matt really likes the west coast im sure (see the song San Francisco, about how he doesnt wanna leave sf and go back to chicago), so hes saying he wants to get there fast...like its an emergency. i think he's saying hes bored with his life and is looking for a change from the methodical (robots to the liquor store). he keeps referring to ways of leaving town and how theyre probably going to a better place ("theres something gray thats leaving town and its way beyong me how it gets off the ground" an airplane, "where it goes, hell knows, but its somewhere better than here", obvious). |

oh yea i wanted to say i think mechspike is pretty far off...the second verse has a lot to do with a loss of innocence or faith i think. he's saying that the only reason this person existed was due to his own belief in them, "the blood sent from your heartbeat that arrived in your neck everytime i salivated over you" is showing that the only reason this person's blood flowed through their body was because of his worship of them. when talks of peeling the persons picture off his wall hes just showing that hes stop worshipping this person.
the black and white and read all over pre-chorus seems to be referring to the bible ("this tired book") and how hes bored of it, so maybe the person he stopped worshipping is a religious figure? what do you think? |

"i put it all on black..." sounds like hes playing roulette, betting it all on black..." no color you were all dressed in" when you think of a holy or pure person, you'd expect them to be in all white (since white symbolizes purity) so he's talking to someone he considers to be holy or pure... basically he's saying he's betting against this person...i donno, thats just the way i took it.
this whole song to me sounds like some sort of loss of innocence maybe? someone else probably said that, but i dont know i didnt feel like reading it all. |

the devil,according to the bible, is a fallen angel...kinda interesting..this is a weird song. kinda sounds like its one of those songs someone writes when theyre on drugs..it seems like hes imagining himself destroying heaven "straight south with the keys to the pearly gates", "and meanwhile heavens falling and fallen angels float away", he stole the keys to heaven, now no one cant get in (maybe?). the overdose thing makes sense too though...or maybe he just had a really bad (or good, depending on how you look at it) trip? |

i never really got this song, kinda always figured it was about a girl he really wished he wasnt dating, but after reading this thread i totally get it...when you say you have a thorn in your side its like saying something is a pain in the ass or a nuisance, so when he says "ive got it now, a thorn in my side the size of a cadillac" hes saying he has a giant burdon to deal with, since cadillacs are known to be very large cars. this makes sense with the 18 month probation thing since im sure being on probation for 18 months would be a giant pain in the ass, what with all the pee tests and meetings with probation officers etc. when he says "drive it through cuz backing up now would be next to impossible" hes just taking the "thorn in my side" metaphor a step further and saying that he might as well suck it up, deal with his burdon and take it like a man since theres no way of getting out of whatever he got himself into. the "i dont deserve this part" probably has something to do with him feeling that his sentence is too harsh...sorta just represents self pity. the complete and utter despair that can be heard in this song is hilarious considering what its about....i love it |

i never really quite got this song, i could never figure out if it was about drugs or a girl, but now that i read some peoples' interpretations it definitely does seem to have something to do with a needle in a haystack...doesnt necessarily mean what hes looking for is a girl though..someone mentioned a stack being a dose of heroin, which makes sense, but doesnt fit the song grammatically..."the stack's been burned away BUT im so inebriated" what does him being high on heroin have to do with him being drunk...why the word 'but' and not 'and'? this song was probably written while on drugs, but is not necessarily about drugs...i donno i dont get. |

laci petersons death was heavily in the media way before that split came out...she disappeared the day before xmas 2002 and was found not too long after that. the split this song was on came out in late spring 2004. laci's death was big news in the bay area considering thats where laci was from, which explains matt's interest, since he lives in sf or berekely or something now...just read the lyrics and think about laci: "A deep dark secret down at the bottom But this bay can’t keep it unforgotten"; laci was found in the bay, her body tied up in some kind of box that was weighted down by home made anchors. it was supposedly dumped there by scott peterson in his boat who obviously did it to get rid of the body (I’ll grab the boat if you go grab the anchor, The tarp and twine and the weights that sank her), but her body turned up anyways and because of that scott peterson, laci's husband (or lover, duh), became prime suspect (They weren’t enough look who showed up A new light is shining through. Illuminating you; Your lover’s blood ran cold, Cutting off the hands he used to hold). theres really not much to pick apart.... |

i always took the "red eyes on orange horizons, if columbus was wrong id drive straight off the edge" part as representing a sunset (maybe signifying the end of something but i always took it as something he just wrote while watching the sun set, but who knows?), because if you look at the sun at sunset its dark red right when its on the horizon and it makes the whole sky turn orange, hence the "orange horizon" maybe? and also, columbus said the world was round when everyone else said it was flat...you know? it just seems like he's just staring at the sky thinking about stuff and hes just getting sucked into all of it...am i taking it too literal or no? |

a lot of people do drugs when they are bored and/or depressed, so i'm guessing he's saying while she's doing whatever drugs she does he's drinking to forget about her...
"making the most of a bad time, i'm smoking the brains from my head, leaving the coal calling the kettle black and orange and red, this kettle is seeing red"
he's saying that now he's doing drugs to take his mind off things, which is pretty much what he was accusing her of earlier, which explains the 'coal calling the kettle black...' line, it's like that old saying 'the pot's calling the kettle black' which is basically noting hypocrisy; the coal and the kettle are both black, theyre both guilty of the same things..the orange and red part is whats confusing for me...it could either mean that both coal and a kettle turn orange and red, which just makes the statement more dramatic, or it could be seen as, though both the coal and the kettle are black only the coal turns orange and red, so someones being accused of more than they should be, sort of a misery loves company thing maybe? when he says 'this kettle is seeing red' he's basically saying the "kettle" (which logically seems symbolic for her but lyrically seems symbolic for him... which kinda makes that part confusing) is mad...when you see red, that means you're really angry about something. |

...and...i think the "youre an angel, you little devil you" part means that he loves the guy who killed himself but hes upset that he did it...kinda like saying "why did you have to go and do that you little fucker?" this is such a good song..you can just hear all the emotion in it... in the verses he sounds so affectionate towards whoever he's singing to, and in the chorus you can tell he's upset...gotta love this band! |
