productofthe80s, I think the whole song is from the perspective of the woman who is the widow of a living man. When she talks to "mama", she is referring to her mother, not Ben Harper's. There's no mention of a child, and no particular reason to think there is one. Not everything is literally nonfictional. |

It's a patchwork of other Andrew Bird songs, including Dewey-Eyed Disney Bride, Richmond Woman, Trepanation, and something else. This would explain why it seems a little odder than usual. Check out archives.org to hear those songs played live. |

This is a calypso story about the band touring, complete with calypso nicknames. As I understand it, the Bat is their old bassist, who was arrested while on the road for driving without a license. Something like that. |

I heard that this song was about a particular person who had spread a rumor that he had been SNZ's weed dealer. He was indeed a drug dealer, but according to them, not theirs. |

She's obviously singing to a dead person, who I suppose is her lover or husband or whatever. I'm thinking she probably killed him (because he doesn't know how to treat a girl), and is about to kill herself as well. This explains, for example, the sirens screaming and setting sail tonight. I think that the singer is the Blue Angel of whom the devils dream. |

This song is about being a poor musician. His phone doesn't ring and his (electric) line doesn't sting because he can't pay the bills. He dreams of air conditioning because he's in North Carolina and it's hot. He's feeling coming change, and he's achieving it by going whole hog (strongest bow, longest arrow). |
