Hi Goonerfan, thanks for the lyrics. I'm not sure, but where you have "I was terrified" the lyrics may actually be "I was tired of the fight". I like the thought that she may have purposely sung that line in a way that says both, if that makes sense. Beautiful song. |

Really atmospheric...Brings me back to another time. It is huge. |

I've heard this song so many times, but it was only while listening to it on a recent road trip that the words "leaning back on a broken willow tree" struck me. Willow trees are known to bend with the wind, but at some point, if the wind is too hard the willow tree snaps...Hhhmmm...And she is leaning on the willow tree...Could it be a metaphor for a person? For herself? Or for him? Maybe she's not dead. These memories are "weary"...the memories are exhausting...Could it be possible that they persist and tire him because he is somehow to blame? If I were to take this line of reasoning another step, consider the broken beads... |

MarginalBoy, it is a beautiful song. Karen is the singer/Berringer's girlfriend of three years. More in this interview: http://www.3ammagazine.com/buzzwordsblog/2006/06/secret-meeting-in-basement-of-my-brain.html |

This is such an excellent song. And I read/hear absolutely no misogyny in it... The Tennessee William/click lines refer to the play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The main character (named Brick) says he has to drink until he feels "the click", and that once he does he feels peaceful. The chorus of men singing "la la la" in the background of this song is so fine. |

| Thanks. Excellent call on the heroin and IV! I didn't think of Alex having an addiction so much as a mental disorder (though they're often the same). Being bitten does suggest heroin. Yesterday I was almost going to write that aside from this song indicting Alex and perhaps the neighbors, there's a sense I get that the siblings are also a bit messed-up. Looking at what you wrote, and at the lyrics again, I see it even more, i.e. "For a year we caught his tears in a cup. And now we're gonna make him drink it." It's almost like they're seeking payback...? Also, the concern with the neighbors could be considered kind of superficial on their part (although it's certainly understandable)... | |

| After not hearing this song for some time, I listened to it again the other night. It's excellent. I enjoyed reading everyone's comments. Regarding lyrics, the part about the brother being bitten by a vampire might also relate to the severity of the brother's problems/oddity. It's also the way that children - who don't understand - might try to explain a realistic disorder... The concern with the neighbors could be looked at as a genuine necessity or could it be that they're just embarrassed by him? After all, the whole “neighbors can dance in the police disco lights” (such a great line) suggests that the neighbors seem to revel in the spectacle of Alex’s transgressions... Also, could the "great adventure" be one of the mind - Alex losing his mind? There's such a joyous feel to this song, an almost childlike celebratory tone, but it's quite dark lyrically... | |
