Ben Folds Five – Jackson Cannery Lyrics 18 years ago
yeah, of course big brother is meant in the 1984 sense. I LOVE this song, it makes me feel better when I feel pissed off at "the system." btw, I think the words are slightly wrong, I'm pretty sure it's "didN'T mother nature..." not that it really changes the meaning so much. I love that bf can rock so good, and also have brilliant references to shakespeare and 1984... I just love that bit about Ceasar's ghost telling you to get off the bus- what's the bus- yeah, I believe that the bus could be referring to the guy who got off the bus to work and went to italy, but the bus is totally a great metaphor for the boring, common life.

Five Iron Frenzy – Plan B Lyrics 19 years ago
When I was in high school I liked this song because it was funny and catchy. Today I got the urge to listen to it because my crazy college life and midterm week have got me thinking about why I'm even doing all this... and this song cheered me up a little bit, because it's a reminder that "plan b" isn't so pretty.

Lifehouse – You Belong To Me Lyrics 20 years ago
well, as I read down all these comments every resonse i had to what you guys said someone beat me to it, like the fact that rufus wainwright is amazing, but jeff buckly did the best cover of that song, and that this song is originally by pee wee king, and that it's a great cover. I'll add that this was originally recorded by Jo Stafford, Patti Page, Dean Martin, and The Duprees. it's been covered over and over, tori amos and bob dillian and a country girl who's name escapes me at the moment.

Rufus Wainwright – In a Graveyard Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is indeed gorgeous, and it's also one of the darkest songs he's ever written. I think this song is about fantasizing about death. He goes there with a friend, and thinks of death as peace, worldly sounds of endless warring being silenced for the dead, and he smiles as he leaves thinking about being at peace in death. Pretty cynical... but haven't you been there? where you'd rather it was all over?

Rufus Wainwright – Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk Lyrics 20 years ago
"Everything it seems I like's a little bit stronger
A little bit thicker, a little bit harmful for me"

i consider this to be the thesis of the song. we all have attractions to habits or lifestyles or just thoughts that are bad for us. some of them are worse for us than other. (those things, which for several reasons we won't mention) not just because he wants to be poetic, but because we hide those guilty pleasures from the world. whenever someone really gets to know us, they have be kind, because the truth is that we're ALL a mess.

Rufus Wainwright – Poses Lyrics 20 years ago
Guys this is a common theme in art, it's about how silly we are in society, putting worth on things that don't matter and never digging for deeper truth or more out of life. "there's never been such grave a matter as comparing our new brand name black sunglasses." the poses is everything that is fake, or not what it seems. "once you've fallen from classical virtue won't have a soul for to wake up and hold you." once you lose sight of thinking that the most important things in life are love and friends and working towards true happiness, if you lose sight of all that you won't have a soul for to wake up and hold you, we become empty poses, walking the streets drunk on fifth avenue, the textbook definition of your average joe, given up on bigger dreams and ideas and settling for what is easy, but empty.

Rufus Wainwright – Damned Ladies Lyrics 20 years ago
He's empathizing with women, all of these women are women that were devoted in love and had men to terrible things to them that essentially ruined their lives. "your arias caused a stir in my sad and lonely heart." an aria is a solo in an opera. He's saying their stories make his heart go out to women. Give the man more credit, he's an artist.

Radiohead – You and Whose Army? Lyrics 20 years ago
holy roman enpire. the whole ending here is wrong. it's "you ought to know." and "oh, so sad." and Holy Roman Empire is a symbol for ultimate hypocricy because the holy roman empire was not holy, roman, or an empire. The HRE was an attempt to recreate the effectiveness and greatness of the roman empire. trying to force people to revert back to the way they are. The song is about just that, people trying to change who you are. and he says, you ought to know, you ought to know. we ought to know that we can't change people. "oh, so sad. " we don't learn from history and we keep going through this problem where the government or society tries to change people and all they ever get is a mess.

Rufus Wainwright – One Man Guy (Loudon Wainwright III cover) Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't think this song is really about strength in singleness because in the third verse he says;
"Sure it's kind of lonely
Yeah it's sort of sick
Being your own one and only
Is a dirty selfish trick"

He's saying that even though it's hard to be alone he'd rather be by himself than be hurt again... I can totally relate. This is kind of a common theme for him, that it's better to be alone than to be in a relationship that's ultimately going to hurt you. his earlier song "april fools" is along the same lines.

Rufus Wainwright – California Lyrics 20 years ago
you're right, fanster, but it's critisizing more than California, it's the pop-culture and materialism. it's a cry to the masses, "can we please talk about something besides Jennifer Lopez's new love interest or what plasic surgery pamela anderson had?"

Creed – Weathered Lyrics 20 years ago
A great rule of thumb for especially creed lyrics but most other writers as well is that the second verse tells you more plainly what the real issue is and the bridge, if there is one, is the response to the issue presented.
So in the second verse he says, "simple living is my desperate cry. been trading love for indifference, and yeah, it suits me just fine." ppl who have been hurt over and over get to a place where they just want to be left alone. You get to a point where you stop aspiring for love and just hope ppl will not seek you out to hurt you. "I try to hold on but I'm calloused to the bone, maybe that's why I feel alone, maybe that's why I feel so alone." whenever an lyric writer repeats something it's really important. this is telling us that this attempt we make to protect ourselves by not caring about other ppl so they can't hurt us makes us feel even worse because we've pushed the whole world away.
The bridge changes the mode of writing, and de-personalized it (because remember, good writers don't just write for themselves, they want to contribute) and switches from telling a personal story to addressing everyone in the world who has ever felt the way that he spent the first three verses and the chorus illustrating: yeah, life sucks sometimes but we you can choose if your hard times will defeat you or if you will embrace the past to learn from it and make yourself wiser and stronger.
and by the way, "weathered" is the title of the song AND album, and it's found in the chorus, which means we need to pay special attention to it. weathered is a great word that symbolizes a person that has been through things that are so hard it's amazing they're still in one piece. something that is weathered looks kind of beat up, and a person that is weathered is someone that you can see them and you know they've been through a lot, but they still maintain healthy pride.

Creed – Beautiful Lyrics 21 years ago
rock on, myownprison333, everything you said is true for me too. i would like to add that this song is a lot more meaningful than some ppl who have attempted interpretation see.

what this song has always meant to me is that it speaks against the dangerous tendancy ppl have to value beauty, especially women. the song uses biblical references. in bible times virgins wore white, "she wore a coat of color. loved by some feared by others, immortalized in YOUNG MEN'S eyes." She wasn't allowed to wear white because she wasn't a virgin. so young men see her and think they can get her in bed. she was beautiful, but innocent. her innocence was stolen because HELLO, she was raped by her brothers. close your eyes here's your surprise. that's the clearest way the writer can tell you she's getting raped without being graphic.
and then her beauty is discussed. yeah, she's beautiful, but her beauty has only hurt her because of what has been done to her. this stuff is all on the surface though. what the heart of the song is really about is not a girl that gets raped and how terrible that is, but how in a way society's push to value beauty only damages women. women try their whole lives to be comsidered beautiful and they're never happy. and because so many girls want to feel beautiful and get attention from men sometimes they act and dress like whores just to feel beautiful, and it still doesn't help. "Beautiful loves no one. Beautiful stripped me" that's talking about the beauty that ppl aspire to, and it's all in vain. we spend our whole lives seeking some status or title that we think we need, and we hurt ourselves and each other in the process.

a good song writer never just comes out and says it. you have to dig for the true meaning.

The Beatles – Across the Universe Lyrics 21 years ago
yeah, and newsflash to the stuck up metallicaman and all the other beatles lovers who think they're so original, the beatles were THE most popular group in the US for an entire decade, so stop acting like some whiney punk-rock-kid when the rest of the world discovers their favorite garage band. And if a younger generation discovers the beatles by means of the covers on the I Am Sam soundtrack (which is an excellent album) than good for them!

Jars of Clay – Goodbye, Goodnight Lyrics 21 years ago
no, actually this is a song about how the saved will leave the unsaved behind, and how sad it is that they don't know the truth. they think they're just fine and dandy and don't know what's waiting for them. It's also to make christians realize how important it is to preach the gospel, because the world is headed for hell and they don't even realize it.

Rufus Wainwright – April Fools Lyrics 21 years ago
"Let it all go by, looking at the sky, wondering of there's clouds and stuff in hell" this is making fun of how rediculous ppl get in relationships, with their oh aint life grand, and what they have as this idea of love isn't real. and you look at the first verse, february 14 to april fools day... saying that stars-in-your-eyes love only lasts a few months

Am I the only one who thinks he's being sarcastic? I mean think about it, "I have a heart that's made of wood." He's saying she thinks he's just trying to get some. and "the hem of your garment," like she's royalty. she's a snob and she's got this condecending picture of him and he's pissed about it.

my theory:
he loves his girlfriend, they've been together a long time, but she's starting to ignore him and it makes him feel like she doesn't care about him at all. would she stop chatting with her girlfriends on the phone long enough to notice her boyfriend throwing his prize posession out the window? he's saying, screw it, what does anything (even his guitar) mean if he can't be loved in return?

Cake – Daria Lyrics 21 years ago
I don't agree with you guys, although some of you are on the right track. I think it's about someone who has someone who says that want to love them and take care of them but they don't actually want to deal with who they really are and their problems. the second verse sums it up, the girl wants him to be all lovey dovey with her, and put aside all his own feelings.
