Porcupine Tree – Sleep Together Lyrics 18 years ago
Taken with the rest of the album, it seems that its pretty blatently about suicide. I mean, between how dark the song is, and the line 'lets sleep forever', 'This means out', I think its hard to take it another way.

Also, the discussion about erasing the files, burning his clothes, etc... A depressing but fantastic ending to a great album. FoaBP tells a story, and unfortunetly this story (which represents thousands of kids in the US) is not a happy one.

Radiohead – Optimistic Lyrics 19 years ago
I apologize if you had to read a while to get to a real answer. First off--Radiohead has never been a band to set up a concept album. They often have a kind of thread they follow as it happens to run when their writing, but as Johnny Greenwood said, you have to create the songs then set them up in order... So throw the awkward 'Kid A' Clone ideas out the window. I think if you take a look at this analysis the song will make more sense then anyway youv thought of it before:

This song is, pretty appearintly about the record industry and music in general.

"Flies are buzzing around my head
Vultures circling the dead
Picking up every last crumb"

--People who try to rip your (Thoms) art off when you already feel drained, and like what youv done is useless.

"The big fish eat the little ones
The big fish eat the little ones
Not my problem give me some"

Big bands consume smaller bands, and Im guessing Thom is being sarcastic about the 'give me some'. A general slam to materialistic bands.

"You can try the best you can
If you try the best you can
The best you can is good enough
(x2)"

Thoms anthem for music in general, and arts trying to make good music. Saying that, simply, the best you can do at your art is all you can do, and good enough. Also something his girlfriend said to him when he was struggling. I think he wanted to extend it to everyone else.

"This one's optimistic"

Someone hopefull for their music/art.

"This one went to market"

Someone not so concerned with art, but with making money from it.

"This one just came out of the swamp"

Either a reference to someone sucking, or new on the scene and not sure what to do with their talent.

"This one dropped a payload
Fodder for the animals
Living on an animal farm"

A band bassicaly creates something that gets popular, and everyone leeches from it *Easily within the confines of the animal farm reference if you know the story*

"I'd really like to help you man
I'd really like to help you man....."

Thom reaching out to the bands who are trying to make it.

"Nervous messed up marionette
Floating around on a prison ship"

Two references to confinement--Thom lamenting over the people stuck within the confines of what they think they can do, in a follow up to why he wants to help them break free of it.

The Beatles – Yellow Submarine Lyrics 20 years ago
Alright, seriously. I hope that if you read some of the other opinions you get to this one, because I am astounded by some of the stupid things Iv had to read in this comment section. At one point, I believe someone actually said that Kurt Kobain was a better lyricist then John Lennon, or any Beatle.

Rest assured--They are foolish fanboys, consumed by a band so they instantly assume its better then other bands. Fact of the matter is that Beatles revolutionized rock in hundreds of ways. Nirvana would have, of course, never existed if not for The Beatles. The Beatles bassicaly invented metaphoric and symbolic lyrics in deep layers. Well, may not have invented in the traditional sence, but they certainly made them useable, mainstream, and inspired masses of people to do so in the future. I didnt even like The Beatles untill about 6 months ago, but since then I took the time to learn all there was to know about them. They did everything from invent the internet, to get the Rolling Stones their start, as well as encourging them in all regards.

But yea, besides that: Yellow Submarine could mean manythings. It could of course mean drugs, as many of there songs were written while on them (seriously, dont try and act like they werent. The group admitted to this hundreds of times, as well as each one being aprehended various times for marijuana posession). It could also just as easily be a childrens rhyme. Unless you hear it from the artist, let it mean what you want it too.

Nine Inch Nails – You Know What You Are? Lyrics 20 years ago
This songs meaning is of course very debatable (well... Untill Mr. Reznor decides to perhaps tell us what its about). To me its bassicaly making fun of sheeple, worthless people who live worthless lives and do nothing for mankind, and remain willfully ignorant of things... I just like thinking that because bassicaly I think most people are completly pathetic, and Reznor shares my distaste for how worthless people are... Lines that might back my theory:

But you can't change anything, you can't change anything in the end

(Peoples inability to do anything meaningfull with there lives)

When they figured me out and it all just rotted away
(People who would mock Reznor, despite his musical genius and inteligence and influence in music and peoples lives, just because they dont like his music).

Very personal take, I look forward to the day when Reznor might say what this is about.

Rage Against the Machine – Testify Lyrics 20 years ago
Well, really you can interrelated the social aspect/oil aspect of these songs, since they are intertwined. All Rage Songs tend to have a few political meanings in them threwout at some point...

Also, Eric Blair (Orwells real name) loathed communism, if you bother to read any of his books youd note the extreme sarcasm that he mocks the Soviet Union with, as well as Germany. Animal Farm is a blatent satirical slam against Russia, and 1984 follows the same route. The point of 1984 was this is how Orwell (while building on the ideas of those before him) pictured the year 1984 to be. Orwell was a true socialist, not a communist. Two very, very different things.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Eye Lyrics 20 years ago
Um... To possibly put an end to the name debate, you might just take a look into the Adore album coverslip for your answer...

although I find it highly likely that he just replaced 'i' with 'eye' for the cover, to make a cool song name. Or when you say 'I' people just naturally say I.. Im not sure.

Im guessing the song is just about a relationship, or a guy who likes a girl.

Oh, and again on the name thing: He also has many many more songs where the name doesnt seem to have anything to do with the it, or actually just kind of describe the song without actually using words from it, as most artists do... Billy, in accordince with all he does, just seems to be more creative...

I mean, who names such an amazing song Mayonaise? Hehe.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Behold! The Night Mare Lyrics 20 years ago
Um.. To the guy who says this was about god:

Billy Corgan doesnt believe in God, at least in the christianity sense.. Ever hear the song Zero?

... This song is about death and his mother, as most of Adore is. Its pretty obvious.

Harvey Danger – Flagpole Sitta Lyrics 20 years ago
Please people! This song is amazingly Political... Just listen to it:

---I had visions, i was in them
I was looking into the mirror
To see a little bit clearer
The rottenness and evil in me---

Looking into the mirror, seeing that he's clearly as evil as everyone else, and he's just another part of the society he hates, as he goes on to explain

--Fingertips have memories
Mine can't forget the curves of your body
And when i feel a bit naughty
I run it up the flagpole and see who salutes
(but no one ever does)--

Im tempted to agree with the masterbation theory here, as though america is so sexually repressed that alls people can do most of the time is masterbate, because actual sex is so frowned upon.

--I'm not sick but i'm not well
And i'm so hot cause i'm in hell---

Just another reference to Society, how he lives a good life, but he's not really happy with it, and how America is bassicaly evil.

--Been around the world and found
That only stupid people are breeding
The cretins cloning and feeding
And I don't even own a tv---

Pretty self-explanitory: People are stupid, and you can figure that out just by watching TV. People have children, raise them up with prejudices and racism, and bassicaly make them evil. People only keep getting stupider and stupider.

--Put me in the hospital for nerves
And then they had to commit me
You told them all I was crazy
They cut off my legs now i'm an amputee, god damn you--

If you dont agree with society, your crazy. Especially these days, where if you on the slightest matter disagree with the Am. Govt. your not patriotic, and your an 'enemy traitor' or whatever. And outcasted, like an amputee.

--I'm not sick but i'm not well
And i'm so hot cause i'm in hell
I'm not sick but i'm not well
And it's a sin to live so well --

First part same as top, but the bottom part refers to the fact that Amrericans live astoundingly well, with a relative poverty thats above the wealth in countrys like Africa. Bassicaly America takes up so much of the worlds wealth that other countrys can barely survive.

--I wanna publish zines
And rage against machines
I wanna pierce my tongue
It doesn't hurt, it feels fine
The trivial sublime --

RATM=Most major liberal band ever, pierce my tounge = going against the norm, publish zines = getting the word of the bad out.

---I'd like to turn off time
And kill my mind
You kill my mind--

People generally like to be more stupid, then bother educating themselves on real issues. I think he might be referring to how the govt. and media just brainwashes and kills peoples minds.

---Paranoia paranoia
Everybody's coming to get me
Just say you never met me ---

How ridiculsly paranoid America is.

--I'm going underground with the moles --

Sticking your head in the ground, rather then paying attention to whats going on, like the general public.

--Hear the voices in my head
I swear to god it sounds like they're snoring
But if you're bored then you're boring
The agony and the irony, they're killing me --

Eh, pretty self explanitory

Its a bit rough as far as explenation goes, but when you start thinking about it in a political sense, it bassicaly makes perfect sense.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Try, Try, Try Lyrics 21 years ago
Billy says this song isnt so much about him self trying to hold on to something... but as he put it 'what I mean is, like, good luck trying to hold on to me'. Interpret that as you will.. As in maybe they'll decide they hate him, or maybe he'll decide he's not happy with them.. Billy also says this song is really a great example of the way he usually really feels about life. Great song.

Wow.. You guys are thinking way to much about this.. Its actually about the most simple of the SP songs to decipher: Billy said he wrote this right after breaking up with his girlfriend. Go back and read the lyrics... See it?
